i think they managed to make that hug not corny, which i did like. it would have been silly if they kissed or something. instead we got a very human moment of people holding eachother anticipating their death. i still would have liked to have seen Cassian make a stronger sacrifice at the end and for Jyn to have died standing, but those are just personal prefs; probably on second viewing i will like this moment even more once i've let my expectations go.

    My opnions:

K-2SO - Agree with you, amazing death. Might, maybe, possibly could have had one more smart-ass remark before "climb!" but not necessary as his death gave me chills and the tears.

Bodhi - Where as I agree, random grenade seemed a little sad, we have to factor in that he only just got the message out in time, so I was ok with his death scene.

Chirrut - Yep, totally agree. His death was cool, but could have used more action. And instead of surprise at actually reaching the station with the lever, it would have been much more epic to have him use the force for the first and last time. Suddenly "seeing" everything by feeling with the force, and whispering "I AM the Force, and the Force is me" before some epic explosion.

Blaze - More action, more damage, and you got it! The only scene that actually had tears down my cheeks - his acceptance of the Force before going out in a Blaze of Glory, the one thing Chirrut wanted.

Cassain and Jyn's death scene was a little corny. I like your concept of looking down at the Kyber crystal, that would be neat. I have no real opinion about Cassain's death, I always figured they would die together, however I would have preferred them to die up on the tower than down on the beach.

    Love your ideas!

But Pao wasn't on the U-Wing nor was he under it when it fell.

Pao is dead as a doornail, as he was on the surface of the planet when the Death Star struck it...

That's true but Pao being an amphibian and there being so many water all around, I like to think he pulled this awesome Aquaman speed and swam to safety befor the blast hit. Ha Ha I know that's real farfetched but hey who knows! Back in TPM days, we all would have thought crazy anybody who would have said that Darth Maul could still be alive so I really see it easier to belive that Pao could swim real fast than Maul having survived being cut in half. Can't blame a guy for dreaming!

I understand where you are coming from, but truth be told, Darth Maul getting cut in half and surviving isn't a good thing. Don't get me wrong, he was a character that shouldn't have been killed off so quickly in TPM in the first place... but since they showed him get killed (sorry, sawed in half at the waist for any humanoid species is a killer), bringing him back with spider legs was just plain BAD.

Pao was a cool looking alien background character, but that's it... we can certainly have more of his species in future films if people liked his design that much. But no need to try to resurrect him by thinking that he swam away through the superheated waters of Scarif as it took the Death Star blast ... No matter what, the kind of explosion that occurred might not have blown the planet up, but certainly would have extinguished most, if not all, life on the planet.

Which is the long way to say, "Sorry, Pao's a goner."

Actually I was quite glad Disney didn't ask for some characters to survive (like exfiltrate them in the fleet or rnning into a secret tunnel)... It gives the whole movie a dark tone, and the non-heroic death of some gives a more realistic gritty war movie tone. Just a silly question, I don't remember Imperial stormtroopers using so many hand grenades in the original trilogy ??? Or is it my bad memory ???

Not gonna lie though, if the Ghost had swooped down at the last moment and saved Jyn and Cassian, and took them away for other adventures, I would have been excited in a different way.

I went into this expecting everyone to die, so I guess I didn't have any preconceived ideas to "overcome." That said...

Bodhi Rook was my favorite character, because I found his character and his character arc most relatable personally. I wish he could have been sure the transmission got through after all he'd done to make it happen, but...well, war isn't pretty, is it?

Jyn and Cassian...I could have done without the "sunset on the beach" trope--but since they subverted it in such a gutsy way, I can live with it. I did like that TPTB didn't go any further than "we made a connection and formed a bond, and though there is no future for us, now we have the human comfort of dying together." It worked.

K2SO's death hit me the hardest--probably because it was a slow, drawn-out process, during which he just kept working to make the mission happen. Sort of like all our heroes. Just keep going, no matter what, because hope.

P.S. He's not our crew, but I should add that I loved the way Krennic realized at the end that he was going to get killed by his own creation.

Agree. Yesterday I watched ROTJ - after watching ANH and TESB after RO - and I can tell if the Victory Celebration was already bittersweet after watching TFA, now after watching RO it feels more emotional for me.

As Emma Thompson said in the movie "Sense and Sensibility" (paraphrasing Jane Austen): "There is a painful difference between the expectation of an unpleasant event and its final certainty."

Before this we knew that in the Galactic Civil War there were a lot of casualties but none of them were close to home. Yeah we lost Biggs, Red Leader in ANH, we lost Dak in TESB (just to mention a few) but none of them were characters we got attached to. And even when our heroes were harmed on a certain way during the OT, they were still standing there in the end.

For example, in Rebels, we know Ahsoka didn't make it back to the Rebels after Malachor, but we do not know for certain what happened to her. We suspect Kanan and Ezra will be gone at least by the time Yoda tells Luke: "When I'm gone, the last of the Jedi you will be." BUT we do not know yet for sure.

Everything was poetic. And yeah, there are several possibilities on how they could have survived but at the end, they didn't.

Chirrut should have absolutely faced and been cut down by Vader.

Vader faced none of the protagonists. That's kind of a big problem.

Sure, it was fun watching him tear those boys up, but that's just action McDonald's food. Not cuisine.

Who was the main antagonist? Vader? Tarken? Krennic? The Empire at large?

Yeah, it's certainly opened the door for all sorts of conspiracy theorists in the series now. I guess we just have to assume that a combination of his Zabrak anatomy and Dark Side powers sustained him. I've always appreciated the retcon, kind of like the Fett death retcon, but maybe if we stopped killing off cool characters way too soon we could have a more intelligible plot.

I thought Krennic made a lot of sense as the main antagonist. As Jeremy Jahns pointed out, in this movie you have Krennic struggling with Tarkin. Next, in ANH we move up the chain of command and see Tarkin struggle with Vader. Then in ESB we see Vader more on his own with his fleet ((certainly with no shortage of worthless officers, though) and finally we have Vader struggling for power with the Emperor

Krennic's the bottom of the command ladder within that vignette, so of course he "sucks". That's kind of the point. Still makes for a rather unique villain, though. The end, atop the tower, felt almost Bond-esque, like something out of Goldeneye. A little cheesey, but I liked it.
