Yeah I also enjoy the fifth element, I used to really like Bruce Willis in movies but recently hearing what kind of person he is it makes me like his movies less, kinda like how Tom Cuise is in some really good movies but he is a crazy person in Scientology which makes me respect him less lol

I never watched it I will have to check it out

Yeah I love fire fly and serenity, it saddened me that the was only one season and a movie. I also wanted to say that although it's more of a series then a movie I really enjoy Babylon 5. I think I am gonna watch though the series again as this wait for episode VII is driving me crazy.

I voted Blade Runner - Classic! Also, a sequel coming.

I also love the Terminator movies as well. (Honorable mention -- the first 2 Alien movies.)

I don't know about this one. I'm trying to be optimistic but I'm not sure there needs to be another film.

I feel the same way, but if the do do another I think they should uses different characters and a different story in the same world. With out ruining the first movie in case someone has yet to see it. I think that an old Harrison would kinda water down the over all plot. I heard Ridley Scott was trying to get him t come back but I think it's to late for that. Also Without the most interesting character"Roy" I don't think it would be as good. I have the briefcase collectors set it is awesome

I like Looper a lot and I am not just saying that because Rian Johnson is directing 8. Johnson does a fantastic job of world building and just its just a flat out cool movie.

John Carpenter's The Thing is my favorite. It's sci-fi/horror, but I'd say it still qualifies. That's far an away my top pick.

Anyone who is into the planet Of The Apes franchise is an okay guy in my book.

I'd also like to chime in and say the Disney John Carter movie was underrated and deserves to be seen. Not the best by any means, but a solid, fun movie that didn't deserve to bomb like it did. My hopes for a Flash Gordon remake pretty much went up in flames with that movie.

Apparently, Disney lost the rights to John Carter because Edgar Rice Borough's estate took it back. It's strange because the books are public domain.
Also his estate just gave the rights for Tarzan to 20th Century Fox, anyone think they will get Princess of Mars rights too to compete with Star Wars after losing them to Disney?

Interesting. But I don't think any of those could complete with Star Wars"although I do know they would try " lol. I have been going through top Scifi lists and trying to find movies that I have never even heard of before.

Well the John Carter books were some of George Lucas' inspiration, it would be awesome to see the whole series made into films.

Gotta go with Blade Runner and especially Close Encounters. I think that Spielberg did such a wonderful job of balancing the story - it's really a traumatic thing that Neary is going through in that whole thing, losing his job, his family and damned near his mind because of the fragmented visions he's having. And Spielberg applied just enough humor and sense of wonder to turn that traumatic experience into something very fascinating and ultimately uplifting. I just flippin' love that movie!

And Blade Runner is not only a great sci fi movie with some damned near perfect scenes, but it's also one of the few Philip K. Dick stories ever put on the big screen that I didn't feel was wrecked in the process. (I'm not a big fan of the notion of a sequel, by the way. I think the story was already told.)

Your list for voting has some really excellent movies on it.

I voted for 2001 because I am a sucker for Kubrick, but it probably is my favorite on there.

I also really like Akira, and if anyone is into it at all, I would suggest reading the comics. They are six volumes but they are far less convoluted than the movie, and are really exciting (they are, without question, the best comics I have ever read). Also, Domu by the same author is much shorter but contains a lot of the same sci-fi ideas.

I'll also put my hand up for 5th Element.

Lastly, I'm surprised no one has talked about the Chronicles of Riddick, I dig those movies, hard!

Yeah the Akira comics are awesome only on volume 2 so far but way different then the film.

I gotta watch close encounters again it's been a long time. When I was a kid that movie would give me nightmares. From what I remember it was a really good movie, but being abducted is one of my biggest fears so it's hard to watch certain thing like the Xfiles even though I think they are really awesome .

    What about The Hunger Games?
    They're kind of like sci-fi I guess.

LOVE the Mad Max series and looking forward to the reboot but I wouldn't call them sci-fi since they have their own sub-genre of post-apocalypse films.

I never really thought of it like that lol . So would Cyber punk be a separate genre as well?

I don't think so. The difference for me is that Post-apocalyptic usually takes place in the future BUT one that has devolved technologically. (Neo-barbarism.) Cyber-punk takes place in the future where tech has grown exponentially. IE Johnny Mnemonic. I know bad movie but good example of cyberpunk IMO.

Terminator is sort of post-apocalyptic but advanced technology still exists. Same with the Matrix. Those are dystopian sci-fi.

I guess for me there has to be some sort of scientific thread that holds the story together and Mad Max is just a world after a nuclear war.

I like Johnny Mnemonic lol. I might say the Matrix is Cyber punk just because there minds are stuck inside a computer simulation, but the world is all destroyed as well .

I wonder how many over all categories we could split Science fiction into? It has to be a lot
