The Battlestar Galactica reboot was absolutely fantastic. Just an amazing story, perfect characters, and incredible acting.

The Matrix was the best science fiction story since Jurassic Park, which was the best science fiction story since reading Archur C. Clarke, H. G. Wells and Jules Vernes.

My favorite non-Star Wars movie would have to be Star Trek: Generations ( I have not seen any of the ones in the poll at the top of the page)

Tough one to choose. I would have to say Close Encounters, simply because the acting was so damn good in it. Dryfuss going a bit nuts was amazing. The Matrix however was a real mind trip, had to go back a second time just to try and get my head around it and Neo was a fantastic protagonist that we could all identify with. I do love scifi about time travel though.

Having just got back from it, I'll have to say Interstellar. A film for the ages.

I really want to see a Nolan take on sci-fi. Really looking forward to this movie.

BTW- did you kind of expect to see the Episode VII trailer? :p

Nope, given that John Williams hasn't recorded the score to the trailer yet.

Just got back from watching Interstellar in theaters and it was really good as well. Even though this how I looked when the movie was over.

My non-Star Wars list would include:

    Interstellar
    Oblivion
    Blade Runner
    Forbidden Planet
    The Fifth Element
    Stargate
    Gattaca
Star Trek the Wrath of Khan

I am probably leaving out quite a few but those are the ones the came to mind immediately. Interstellar really blew me away though and I am going back for another showing soon. It has probably been since the PT that I felt the desire to see a movie more than once at the theater.

i wish you would have added an other option. I wish i could pick just one but i cant. from the list you gave i choose Blade runner. my top picks are as follows in no particular order.

    1. eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
    2. Back to the Future
    3. the Man from Earth

I don't think hunger games qualifies as sci-fi. its a personal opinion but i rate post apocalyptic movies and sci-fi separate.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is another great movie people always forget about. One of the few times a remake was better then the original (like John Carpenter's The Thing ;))

I only included obscure sci-fi you might not have seen.

    Brainstorm (1983)

    Brazil (1985)

    eXistenZ (1999)

    Logan's Run (1976)

    Soylent Green (1973)

    Outland (1981)

    Primer (2004)

    Repo Man (1984)

    THX 1138 (1971)

    They Live! (1988)

    The Dead Zone (1983)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

    Avalon (2001)

If you like Dark City (1998) you might like: Night Watch (Nochnoy dozor) 2004 and Day Watch (Dnevnoy dozor) 2006. Although it has a lot more crazy action it has a similar nightmare surreal feel like Dark City.

    Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)

    Rollerball (1975)

The Year of the Sex Olympics (tv movie) 1968

The Stone Tape (tv movie) 1972

Quatermass (mini-series) - specifically Quatermass and the Pit (III) and Quatermass (IV). There is a Hammer movie version of #3 also known as Five Million Years to Earth (1967)

Survivors (tv series) 1975 to 1977

    The Nightmare Man (mini-series) 1981

Day of the Triffids (mini-series) 1981

Although it's absolute blast now Doctor Who back in the day (60s & 70s) used to be some of the best sci-fi around if not THE best. If you want a list of specific stories to check out I don't mind compiling one for you.

There is some really nice sci-fi anime as well but I don't know if you're into that.

Until last year I would of agreed with you ekg & Vegeta Fett
If you can get a copy, check out Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga. One of the best sci-fi things i have ever read. You probably have seen the movie but that doesnt even scratch the surface, and was animated before the comic was finished.

I really liked that one a lot, though I wouldn't call it "my favorite beyond Star Wars".

By the way - don't double-post within ten minutes of your previous post. Just to let you know.

I was actually talking about the post involving the list and the quote that was posted about three minutes later. They've since been merged.
