    Seems like maybe the new female character and possible "love interest" for Finn probably had too big a role and needed to be scaled down?

    My guess is that they were a bit surprised by just how much the new characters took off with the public. So they are rewriting so we can spend more time with Rey, Finn and Poe as opposed to having their arcs watered down by other new characters.

    Abrams and Kasdan created fantastic new characters, that Johnson probably decided he wanted more room to explore after seeing the final product and the charisma and depth the actors brought to the roles.

    I can see the plausibility of this. Endearing characters win out!

    Agreed.
    The new protagonists have won the fans over. I guess if that means reshaping the screenplay to get it right, I'm all for it. Any other new characters (besides Luke and Snoke, IMO) shouldn't overtake screen time from Rey, Finn, and Poe...we barely scratched the surface of each in TFA. Ha!

    I am more inclined to believe that rewrites happened because of ongoing conversations between Trevorrow and Johnson and Lucas about IX. There are some things they decided to do with IX and thus forced a minor rewrite of VIII. You saw the same thing with VII, but the rewrites happened as they filmed. So my guess is that it has nothing to do with character popularity so much as a story change in IX

    Honestly, I think that there are already too many new characters which I why I TFA "\Star Wars - Lite ." Sort of like "The Turkey Lite" at Quiznos .

    It doesn't really surprise me. The new cast/characters, and how they interacted/played off of each other was one of the most praised things about the film, if not THE most praise. So wanting to focus on more of that instead of trying to introduce several new major ones (Also pretty much all of the major cast survived minus Han, even ones that people thought might die like Hux and Phasma) makes sense from Disney's perspective.

    Plus it doesn't sound like it's a major rewrite. More like reducing a couple of characters roles and maybe giving some of those scenes to the established ones instead. Instead of Finn getting a love interest potentially, they might have more bromance scenes between him and Poe for example.
