Scripts get rewritten all the time, sometimes even during filming. It's hardly unusual, nor is it a big deal. It seems like these rewrites, if this report is true, are relatively minor. And it being done BEFORE filming starts, is a good sign.

The final script is usually fully locked down by the first couple of weeks of filming .

Minor changes may be made during filming. But when it seems some serious restructuring goes on during filming, that to me is a cause for concern. I think this trilogy is all going too fast ...

True for the most part. Only thing that would force a major rewrite that close would be a star pulling out or someone at the top demanding a change

I don't see any cause for concern right now. Rian's had two years to work on this thing, and it sounds like it revolves around a couple of characters. Not a page one rewrite, if filming is only being delayed for like a few weeks.

Mountain out a molehill right now.

The rumors out now say that the new characters roles are to become smaller, so that they could focus on the main characters like Rey, Finn and Poe, etc.

This is the kind of thing that damaged TFA though. Poe going from a dead man walking in act 1 to being the hero in act 3 wasn't planned - and you could tell!
He's a cool character for sure, but him being the one to destroy the base when we have two other heroes (one of which being saber fodder for Kylo) doesn't really make sense. Had that been Finn destroying the Starkiller we might have cared more. Poe's sudden reappearance was also poorly written. We're meant to believe that Finn struggled as much as he did to get off Jakku (away from the FO) and yet Poe just walks away from the wreckage and suddenly gets back to the Resistance? The way he was reintroduced when the X-Wings saved the die was also underwhelming. It all pointed to a rushed script.

I hear rumours that Rogue One is going the same way. Desperate re-writes to sort it out. The problem I think is that Disney got greedy - yes Disney of all things, greedy! They just wanted to get Star Wars back out there while the iron was hot, but they should have shown restraint. Michael Arntd said it would take 18 months for him to write TFA but they said no and JJ and LK did it in 6 weeks!!!!

Lucas put his baby in Disney's care and to me at the moment it looks like they have stuck it in front of the television with a packet of crisps and a {Pepsi and gone out to pick up girls in their daddies sports car.

Will it start filming in the spring ?
    http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/fe...-on-a-perfect-day-star-wars-and-more#/slide/1

Benicio Del Toro: Yeah, I like sci-fi. But the first sci-fi I did was “Guardians.” It’s a different world. The reality is different. Reality is reality and gravity is gravity, but you need to really understand these worlds. How can I find information? How can I do research? You can go and watch the old “Star Wars” movies, but Star Wars has been written for the movies. It’s not based on a book. Rian Johnson, the director of “Episode VIII,” though, which I’m going be shooting this spring, I’m going to have to bombard with questions.

Well this could also only confirm that BDT's part filmed later than other scenes. If the shooting schedule focuses on other parts first he won't be there until like april or may. SO I think you need to read it like that.

Re-writes this late in the game are very common in any movie. Re-writes can happen in middle of film production even. Plus, just because they say "re-write" doesn't mean the entire script. Rian has been working and collaborating on his script for nearly a year now. It is more then likely a couple tweaks here and there, to help move the story better. Again... if this is even true.

Yeah that is exactly the case. Even before 7 was out they were doing these kind of fail safe apologies, like ridley was nervous on her first day and cold bla bla bla. But then it turned out Boyega and Ridley were extremely good and acted their roles very well.

I'm happy they pushed it to 15 december. Rogue One would have oversaturated the audience, it was not a very smart move of Lucasfilm to push in the standalone movies in between the may releases. From now on I associate Star Wars with Christmas, which is great. I do the same with the lord of the rings.

a film always tries to please a certain segment of its audience: its called 'aesthetics'.

GOTG 2 comes out at around that time I think, so they also probably didn't want to cannibalize their audience potentially. Especially since GOTG is kind of "Marvel's SW."

There is no cannibalization unless it's the exact same genre and of which SW transcends nearly most genres .

Umm yeah there is. People have enough time/money to go see one, so they have to choose one of the other sometimes. Also it is the same genre.
