It's explained in the novel, apparently.

Vader and troopers are headed to the bridge, when Vader senses something else. As the 501st storm the bridge, Vader has his hallway scene.

You can see, in the film, the stormtroopers regrouping with Vader as Tantive IV flys away, if I recall correctly.

That makes a lot of sense actually. The way they presented it in the movie just makes it seem like that was the first place they went to when they boarded the ship so thought it was funny that you had the stormtroopers enter first in episode 4 followed by Vader, but in Rogue One you have Vader enter first followed by stormtroopers.

Yeah, the editing was just a little funky... but I think it ultimately paid off :)

Oh I totally agree. Absolutely love the scene, just connected the dots between the two in my most recent viewing and it got me thinking.

The movie and characters were great but would have been worth it just for this scene alone.

Take Vader out of Rogue One and I STILL would rather watch it than any other Star Wars that Disney has to offer.

Rewatched R1 yesterday, and regarding that awesome scene, i have to say they really nailed it. Just the overwhelming Despair in the Rebel Crew's Faces.
They gave their Best, knowing they were doomed already. Woah.

I love it. Fantastic moment and probably one of the best moments of the films

From the point Vader says “prepare a boarding party” to the end is some of the best SW on film. The score especially.....and Jyn/Cassian on the beach .

it's so highly dramatic, I agree. I think the end of Tesb, TFA and R1 are my favourites.

The scene itself was good… But was it necessary?
It was blatant fanservice. Desperate attempts to get bonus points with the fans.
I think a more subtle approach to the scene like having the carnage happening off-screen with only hints of it appearing there and there would have made for a more interesting scene and also a better call-back to some of the routes of Vader’s suit actor David Prowse who was playing a monster in a Hammer Horror movie with Peter Cushing called “Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell”.

And if they had to go with Vader fighting Rebel troops they should have taken an entire platoon on the planet for example, not just a dozen guards.
    Maybe…. How about this:
Vader should have been the one to kill Baze, Chirrut, K-2SO, Cassian and Jyn.

Speaking of this scene, here's something funny for anyone who's played The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion:
