StarWars.com has just revealed new cast photo from the second Star Wars spin-off movie about the adventures of young 'Han Solo'. The photo features directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and all already revealed cast members + confirmation that Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are indeed part of the cast. We also get a first look at Chewbacca played again by Joonas Suotamo, who also played the Wookiee in The Force Awakens. Also we get an announcement that cameras are already rolling and that the movie is still slated for a May 2018 release. Exciting times!!!

    From StarWars.com:

The report confirms Thandie Newton as part of the cast. She was rumored to be in negotiations by Variety a few days ago (here).

And it's funny that actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who just a few days ago said she doesn't know anything about the rumors that she will appear in the movie, is now officially part of it. :)

The announcement also mentions that the movie is still slated for release on May 25, 2018. This puts an end to the rumors that the movie might be moved to December.

The best part of this is the Thandie Newton confirmation! Please let this movie live up to its potential!

    Still very nervous.

I wonder if this will have anything to do with Han freeing Chewbacca? Or even if that is still going to be part of cannon. Life debt and all.

    Urgh, no.

Though I'm more excited for this film now than ever before, the release date has GOT to change! Other than the obvious reasons (late May being peak summer cinema now, Disney potentially cannabilising and being surrounded by major releases), if IX is moved to December 2019 - which is more than likely at this point - then we have a 19 month wait between this and that.

You DID know, Phoebe! You DID know! I’ll never trust again.

Edit: So, what's Woody looking at?

Edit2: Is it just me or does Ehrenreich look like a wee person in that shot - like Emilia Clarke is operating him like a ventriloquist dummy . . . probably just me.

Maybe it's just the picture, but my money is on Emilia playing a love interest for young Han.

And no, the Princess is not jealous. LOL.

Other than that, I will give them the benefit of the doubt! I mean, after Rogue One, there's so much at stake for them!

But I love the performance of Alec Guinness as "OLD Ben" in ANH. That's where the "old-" comes from :D

I'm curious if we are going to get Sanna Starros casting soon and hopefully Lobot as well. I hope Lupita films a secret Maz Kanata role, it would just make sense for the time period and would be pretty cool if they were able to keep it secret.

I'm surprised they stuck with the May release. Perhaps Disney has inside word on Avatar 2 dropping in December?

Would make sense considering that, even though LFL isn't run by George anymore, his friends seem to still have the utmost respect for them (Cameron and Spielberg clearing the way for VIII to be released this December, for example, with Avatar 2 (which was likely delayed anyway, but still) and Ready Player One.

Then again, Avatar sequels will be dropping annually when they start coming (or at least, for now, that's the plan Cameron has in mind), meaning SW wouldn't get a look-in in December if that's the case.

Perhaps even more cunningly, though, is that if Disney stays firm and is willing to risk the potential BO of Han Solo (following Infinity War, being followed by The Incredibles 2, and a bunch of other films that could chip away at its potential performance) then perhaps they are letting Cameron go ahead with a December release for purely strategic analysis: at that stage, the franchise will have had to wait for 9 years between the original and its sequel, leaving it an unknown prospect at the BO. If it performs well (anywhere from $1.3 billion upwards) for a film in its position, then Disney may yet keep IX as a summer release (perhaps moving Avengers 4?) as 3 would likely take a large chunk out of IX's potential BO. Any less, however, and they'll probably take it head on knowing that they can easily outperform it and making Cameron budge.

Now, you might ask, why on earth would they risk the potential BO of Han Solo just to see how much interest there still is in Cameron's Avatar project? It's simple, and, if they didn't realise it before the release of RO, then they certainly have after: the spin-off films won't come close to the BO of the saga films. If Avatar 2 performed well with Han Solo around it could well be looking at losing a few potential hundreds of millions of dollars, not just comparing one film to another but when comparing one studio to another too, but if Han Solo was released in summer - potentially taking away from Infinity War and Incredibles 2, or vice versa - it would be just that: Disney would still be making, potentially, the same combined total that they would have later in the year (and it could break a few records in its own right). Compare that to having a concrete plan for IX and knowing that they can take Avatar 3 head on - or make it move - Disney could easily make a potential half a billion dollars more knowing that, going in, more rewards could be reaped than if they had not risked another film.

Could be a load of nonsense, or it could be the most politically edged saga to unfold in Hollywood for a while between blockbusters.

Pretty sure they just didn't want to have to compete against the juggernaut that is Star Wars.

Being that I have to drive an hour and a half-2 hours on often snow-squall infested highways in the dark to get to a movie theater, I am glad Solo was moved to May. Hopefully episode 9 will follow suit.

I don't get this idea that it is important for a movie of this kind to be released at *just* the right time for maximum ticket sales. I'm sure for some films like an untested new franchise or small indie film it is important, but not Star Wars. Unless of course word of mouth goes around that the movie is bad, but even then...

He looks like a smiling Ford when smiling to some extent but otherwise I agree.
