Mads Mikkelsen confirmed he is playing Jyn's father but now he's saying he is her father when it's Felicity Jones and when Jyn is younger.

    So flashbacks confirmed?

Here's some of what he said.

We're not used to having flashbacks in SW but I wouldn't mind it as long as it helps to tell the story. And in this case, if true, it will help the audience understand why he's doing what he's doing and maybe why the two are on opposite sides and estranged.

I hope we do not see flashbacks only for the reason that the last movie had a flash/Force back, and Episode 8 will probably need to have a flashback to show Rey what happened, so this movie should stay away from that plot device. I think a simple, narrative from the characters or conversation can bring us up to speed.

I can kinda see both side of the fence on this one. I think the movie makers like to use the flashback/vision thing as they can use more of the cinematic tools in their arsenal to tell the story in a more detailed and delicate manner, as opposed to an actors delivery of dialogue. They can be as sublte, or obvious, or as misdiectional as they chose. And they can use other means, such as the cinematography, colour tones, point of view, lighting, tricksy effects et cetera et cetera to be creative in the storey telling. It can also condense information to the viewer that would take to long to deliver via dialogue, and thus affect pacing of the movie and things.

So I guess both have their place, and I guess it depends on the story they're telling and how they want to tell it. It's a bit hard to be generic about it out of context of the movie.

I'm fine with a more traditional flashback in an Anthology film than in a Saga film (not counting the Force vision Rey had in The Force Awakens, which made it work by doing it differently).

Unless, they want to have an artistic style flashback like Hellboy: Golden Army

Eh that doesn't seem to fit the style of Star Wars in my opinion but as I said in another thread...the movie could start with Jym Erso as a kid with her dad and then have a time jump of 15 or so years to the current events of the movie.

The Anthology films can experiment more than the Saga films can, since they don't have 39 years of tradition.

They still need to find a way to respect the 39 year tradition .

It's a spin-off! Doing things a little differently is perfectly fine!

I think flashbacks are definitely a possibility with him playing her father when youngi. Don't think it rules out a time hop though. Personally, I think either is fine as long as they are kept to a minimum and fit the movie. Some movies have soooo many flashbacks that it can be hard to keep up with past/present. Definitely don't want something like that.

Well there are many reasons as to why The PT was supposed to be different because it had to show the peak of the republic, the end of the times of the jedi, and what led to the actual downfall of what we see in the OT and what most fans don't understand is the decisions behind things...what's a midback?
