If they jump back to when Jyn Erso was a child they are going to get really close to the Prequel era. Felicity Jones is 32 and considering that this movie seems to take place within a year or so of A New Hope, I assume, if they jump back to childhood Jyn Erso that would be overlapping with the end of the Clone Wars. Of course Felicity Jones could be playing younger, or any potential flashback might only go back fewer than ten years. Just an interesting possibility.

Flashbacks break the frame of the movie and they give the film a totally different dimension. call it what you will it does not matter if it is named flashback, forceback, dream or whatever. even the "dream" sequence in the prequel was not a real " flashback/dream" Type of sequence because it was distorted and so the frame or the contunuity of the film itself was not broken. in other words the camera/spectator did not get inside the " flashback/dream". But when you get to The " flashback/dream" sequence in maz kanata Rey scene Then the frame gets cut or broken and the camera/spectator gets inside that sequence. there is one in ep.5 but there is a clear distinction and you know exactly when its a flashback/dream. as long as its not overused and used well and for a good reason i guess. it simply would not work well in rogue one.
