Having followed the spoilers, and now seeing episode VII, it's fairly clear they are directly pulling strong themes from The Sword and the Stone (and Arthurian legend in general). Quick examples:
    • Rey is raised in a secret location, virtually no one knows her true identity. (Same as baby Arthur)
    • The meaning of the name Rey is "King". (she is Arthur, and the rightful heir to the Jedi)
    • Anakin's lightsaber is Excalibur - it is lost/forgotten, and the kingdom (galaxy) falls into ruin.
    • Rey pulls the heirloom sword from the snow (it accepts her, and not her nemesis Kylo).
    • Maz is the "Lady of the Lake" equivalent - keeps the sword, and attempts to give it to Rey. (though she rejects it's calling)
    • Kylo is likely the half-brother character: the traitorous nemesis of Arthur, and is the master of the Knights of Ren. (an evil clan)
    • Luke is effectively Merlin: Luke is a master of the Force and can use it to see the future, similar to Merlin. (Merlin even recommends hiding Arthur at birth, and even enchants the sword so it can only be pulled by the true heir).
So there's too many Arthur stories to project where things go from here. But if you buy into the idea the storyline follows Arthurian legend more closely than just thematically, there's a few potential implications for the ST. A few I can think of:
    • Rey's back story is she's hidden, and the true heir to the Jedi. Luke's idea originally.
    • Merlin puts Arthur through many trials by turning him into different animals, and meeting others who will prepare him (though he does not know he will be a King one day). This suggests Ep. VIII with Rey having many journeys to take to become the wise leader.
    • There's room for Rey to have a romantic link. Arthur had Guinevere, but only after bringing peace to his kingdom. At a minimum, there's room for Rey to have a love interest in this context.
    • Rey (or Luke) could eventually create the Knights of the Round table - a new Jedi order. (The good counter balance to the Knights of Ren).. this seems like Episode IX material.
    • A final battle doesn't bode well for Rey in this narrative (Arthur kills his nemesis, but is fatally wounded). That said, that fate could be saved for Luke, and Rey "rules" the kingdom.

Anyone see these parallels too? Any thoughts on where the story could go if they continue following Arthurian legends (and still be compatible as a Star Wars film)?

I'm guessing Finn, having worn armour for a living and having already "taken up the sword", would be Lancelot?

Since he's a potential love interest, maybe he's Guinevere, too? (Saying this feels real weird).

I'm lovin' this line of speculation. Kinda surprised no one else has commented yet.

Pretty sure you've come very close to the Mark here. I even mentioned a similar notion to my girlfriend after our second showing.

The Arthurian thematic also ties visually: a very Arthurian Irish isle as a sort of Avalon. Kylo ren's broadsword style saber. The european look of maz's planet and the alp like star killer base planet.

    Is snoke the Morganna?

    Great analysis. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the responses so far! Glad some other have caught on to this, or at least started thinking about it.

Snoke feels like a wild card to me. I'd say lady of the lake, but she was a nemesis and a love interest for Merlin. But certainly the vast opposite of Luke. Certainly would suggest a show down between the two.

Yeah, I think there's unfinished thinking here. Someone who knows aurthurian legends cold would be able to help this thread a lot.

Finn could be Lancelot, at least as the reliable/loyal side kick - has already proven he'd go back to save Rey/Arthur. (The later aurthurian legends get into weird territory with a love triangle and gueniveire). That said, why not a love triangle with Finn, Poe and Rey?

I found this wonderful post today from @Ammianus Marcellinus in a thread called "An Analogy to Excalibur"...
