For the first time, I'm not excited for a new Star Wars movie

My wife and I were watching TV last night and a Rogue One TV spot came on. When it finished, we both looked at each other and said "let's wait until this one comes out on DVD."

I know that's blasphemy to die-hard fans. I've suspected for sometime now that I would sit this one out. I reserve the right to backtrack if critics fall in love with R1, but for now I'm just not in to it. I feel terrible that I can't muster up some excitement, but this movie seems so two dimensional right now.

I really hope to be proven wrong. My best wishes to all fans. I genuinely hope you love it.

Look, I can see you saying that if say R1 was like the 5th Spinoff. But come on man!

    We're talking classic T-65 X-Wings & Stormies here!

I understand how you feel my friend. After my great disappointment with TFA, it took my some time to get pumped again for RO. I was real hurt by Disney's way of portraying a SW movie and I had lots of mixed feelings for RO. While I know that this movie won't have the very same Lucas touch I love from the OT and the PT, I have gotten pretty hyped for it and am eager to give it a chance. JJ Abrams didn't take any chances with TFA and it turned out to be a rehash of ANH but here we really have a whole new SW story that so far looks really good. I do have to say that though it has hurt me alot to do so, I have had to convince myself that SW belongs to Disney now and I'm going to have to look at it in a whole new way if I want to enjoy it. This is no longer the SW I grew up with as a little kid but a whole new universe that Disney s creating. I have not let my displeasure of TFA blind me and RO slowly one me over as it really does look like it's going to be amazing. Give it a chance to see what happens.

This is a fair criticism (though I fell for TFA hook, line, and sinker). And I'm glad you're getting hyped for RO. Seems worth a chance, either way. And notably, chances are being taken—this looks clearly like a war movie and a star war(s) movie. I think we should be intrigued to see how it plays out, and whether it enriches (or embiggens) the SW universe.

Maybe the clear genre style is what's turning y'all off, @Blazer-Smith?

I am genuinely curious as to your intent with this post-thread? If there is one beyond what is stated. And I am asking only the OP. I want to be fair and not jump to conclusions I can see how this could be interpreted in a good, bad or more than likely neutral way. I think maybe there is but then there is plenty of room for me to be wrong,

He's expressing his feelings as a Star Wars fan. That's what this place is here for.

But is he though? Those are his feeling sure enough, but most of the time I would think stating an opinion goes beyond just a simple declaration.

If he is, ok sure that's great. I feel bad for him to each his own.

But is he looking for someone to maybe talk him out of it? To try and get him pumped up about it?

Is he looking for just some others to simply to commiserate with?

Sure this is a place to express your feelings, but it's also a place to have a conversation. A 2-way thing. Knowing his intent really more fully in my case would help me understand. Now granted he has no obligation to answer, but I am just curious to get a better understanding.

When you first watched Star Wars, and Leia's ship was being riddled with blasts from the Star Destroyer, meekly trying to return fire before being pulled into it's tractor beam, did you think "Woah, what's happening here? What's that little ship got that the big one wants?" or was it more like "Eh. Whatever... Let's see where this goes." ?

Personally, that scene is in my top 3 for most iconic-- maybe even most iconic, but it being the opening scene may have something to do with that. Anyways, my point is, if you enjoyed that scene and the ensuing result, what's not to get excited about? I expect Rogue One to roughly feel like the first 10 minutes of ANH... And in my humble opinion, that's reason for excitement right there.

PS- Not intending for this to sound like an attack on your opinion, I just am trying to drum up a bit of excitement for you buddy! I hope when you do eventually see it, you enjoy the hell out of it! :)

I wouldn' t call myself a fanboy, as Im only a fan of the OT (and liked TFA pretty much), but Star Wars (OT feeling SW) is simply a universe where I like to go back. In fact, its the only one currently in the cinemas which gets me excited. Even if critics declare it the worst movie ever made, I'll still watch it. I can allow myself to waste 10 dollars a year.
Why exactly if I may ask? R1 has nothing to do with TFA. Entirely different cast and crew, different timeline. The only common thing is the distributing company...

Maybe so. It's just seems so predictable where this will go and what will happen. None of these new characters will mean anything to ANH, so what do I care what happens to them?

No ulterior motive, I'm just disappointed that the R1 and Han Solo movies are Star Wars and I'm completely disinterested. Kind of a let down after loving Star Wars my whole life. I don't think anyone can get me pumped for these movies.

...you mean, other than the fact that without them, ANH doesn't happen??

Come on, ANH happened. In fact, R1 has to fit what we already know between ROTS and ANH. It's that lack of freedom to tell a new story that seems so blah.

I can understand that's the way you feel. I think though you might just want to reconsider giving it a chance. What do you have to lose after all? A few dollars and a couple hours out of your life? Let's say your right, to you it sucks. I think even on it's merits not considering it's a Star Wars movie, on its own it's probably better than a lot of stuff on TV or in other movies so no big loss. But let's say your wrong, bam you got the thrill of a life time and your love of SW reaffirmed. Some of my happiest times have been when I greatly diminished my expectations only to be proven wrong.

But whatever you do, do what right for you. Thanks for the wishes. And with no malicious intent I hope your wrong.

It has nothing to do with RO being related to TFA, timeline, cast or crew but with how Disney made it look so alien compared to the ones Lucas made.

Then to be fair, ANH happened because Rogue One happened.

....you don't think there's creative freedom to tell a story, anywhere, in the 20 years that passes between these two movies? Or just not in the moments leading up to ANH?

Bummer. Sounds like you are just not interested in non-trilogy SW. Which is fine, to each their own and all, but I think it at least deserves a chance. Oh well.

There are many reasons to be excited for R1. But for me these are the most crucial ones:

    1) It's a completly new take on the Star Wars movie universe. => No Skywalkers, no Jedi. It's focused on the war between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire.
    2) R1 will finally answer a major Star Wars plot hole.
    3) The music. => For the first time we will hear a different take on the Star Wars score. I can't wait to see/hear what Giacchino has in store for us.
    4) The Return of Darth Vader.

With that last part, I wish he had a much bigger physical presence in R1. .

Probably my most anticipated moment is the "bacta tank" scene. Realllllly wan't to know what's up with that.

I don't mind his limited screen time. If he just gets one great (and badass) scene, then I'm more than satisfied.

I hope that scene wasn't cut because we've never seen this very moment again in any other trailer.

I feel that standalones like Rogue One actually have MORE freedom. Genres. Characters. They can explore anything they wish. I might know the crew of Rogue One is ultimately successful in stealing the Death Star plans, but I have no idea how the story unfolds. And I have no idea about the fates of these characters.

I went into TFA knowing all the new characters would survive. I have no idea if anyone makes it out of Rogue One. I like that unpredictability. It brings tension to each scene.
