For the first time, I'm not excited for a new Star Wars movie

To me, a war movie alone without real story development is just a video game. I know that this movie will look great. The previews have yet to sell me and the 28 minutes they released to journalist hasn't yet produced a review that makes me question my doubts.

Perhaps just seeing 28 minutes doesn't tell them how good or bad the movie is. There are lots of meh movies with 28 good minutes. I don't know why I read this thread or even this board. You guys really bum me out when it comes to Star Wars.

Here is what im hoping is the reason for Gilroy entering into the fold. Chriz Weitz and Gary Witta SUCK. they both are poor story tellers. plain and simple. why they were hired to write this film is beyond me. Edwards has a brilliant visual eye. but ultimately hes filming the screenplay. and i have a feeling that the screenplay for this film, was just plain weak. you kinda get that vibe from the early trailers and tv spots where you only here single lines of dialogue sprinkled throughout the movie. it all looks gorgeous, but the dialogue was flat. in comes Gilroy, an established writer who has done good work in the past. Lately we have gotten full scenes of dialogue for Jyn and others, humor from K2 SO and so on. and it all feels so much more natural. i wouldnt venture to say the humor reminded me anything of TFA Humor.. which i felt was just plain cringey. I think Edwards shot a beautiful film but the writing was too poor for certain emotional beats to hit home and thus you have extensive reshoots. it's quite telling how involved Edwards remains after these extensive reshoots. if your film gets hijacked, normally a director gives his or her audience hints in interviews closer to release that allow for the audience to discern at least a bit about the situation. as if to escape some of the backlash that is undoubtedly incoming. but Edwards remains ever present in regards to Rogue One and he still feels like THE director. i could be wrong, but in my gut i feel that Rogue One actually benefited from rewrites and reshoots. maybe its wishful thinking. but i have heard not one negative comment about those 28 minutes shown. and ive read multiple accounts of people saying the emotional beats hit hard and that this film is actually in the top 3 Star Wars of all time. some are actually claiming it tops ROTJ. i dont think the grittiness has been taken away. from what i have seen from these clips, its still going to be there. but instead of boring dull one liner dialogue bits from the Star Wars Encyclopedia, we have exposition and characters we can actually invest in. I can honestly say i have loved every full clip i have seen that has been released. it felt like Star Wars. it didnt feel like TFA. i totally get your concerns as i share them as well. and i appreciate your passion. i lost hope in Rogue One after those early trailers. but the international trailers and tv spots, and these clips, and the critics screenings have totally reversed that. i hope its as good as its currently being hyped up to be. at the least i hope it absolutely sh*ts on The Force Awakens because in that film it moreso, to me at least, felt like The Force Withers Away and Dies.

Interesting insights Chowderhead, hopefully we're on track for a major addition to the Star Wars universe.

No Jedi vs Sith no Star Wars for me. Jedi vs Sith/Dark Side users is what drew me to Star Wars in the first place and it will always be a must for me in Star Wars. If i want to watch spaceships fly around in space i will go watch Star Trek. And since most Jedis has been whiped out between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope i do not intended to support R1 when its lacking the most importent thing for me.

I'm really looking forward to Rogue One .
Mind you, I was really looking forward to TFA but am tiring of it the more I watch it.
I never tire of the OT though, must be a generational thing

R1 has all of the makings of a 'should-have-been direct to video' release, with the production values of an ABC after school special.

    kidding.....

I think it looks good! I wasn't stoked about it when it was announced, but after seeing the previews and the excitement of the director and cast, I think it will be fun! I guess I get the OP's side of things, but I could never be that way.

This film looks competent, feels like its part of the SW universe, and even though we know the ultimate outcome, the story itself could be good. If you were to tell me a few years ago "hey man...we are making a movie that has walkers battling on a beach. It's been green-lighted and we're doing it. You in?" I'd be all over that!!

The visuals alone have me sold! I was 7 when ANH came out and R1 passes the eye test for me.

I'm looking forward to Rogue One, and I will be seeing it twice in IMAX the 14th, but still I do feel a bit sedated about Rogue One. It does not manage to intrigue me as much as The Force Awakens did, and episode VIII does. Of what I've seen, I think it is going to be a good movie, but I won't be bummed out if it isn't. I was very relieved when I saw The Force Awakens and that the movie was fabulous. If I don't like Rogue One, I always have VIII :)

I'm pumped for it now. Really excited about this movie. I'm sorry but every Star Wars fan will see this movie at some point, any attempt to claim otherwise is flat out stupid.

Even more pumped after seeing Kevin Smith's comments about Vader after the premier from his Facebook page.

"Holy Sith! #rogueone is unbelievably wonderful! No lie: it is #EmpireStrikesBack great! An excellent chapter in the @starwars universe! LOTS of breathtaking moments and tie-ins to the Saga. But you are not prepared for how Maclunkey epic #darthvader is in this movie. You will flat-out squeal through the last act of Rogue One and the final 10 minutes will show you something you've never seen before that you never knew how much you wanted to see in the first place. Incredible flick! I can't wait to see it again! More of this in the world, less of everything else! #KevinSmith #starwars #harleyquinnsmith"

I know, it's treason to go against Rogue One's plot potential.

She was with him at the premier. Think that's the only reason.

Well he basically made an entire movie for her. And it's bad. Really really bad. And I say this as a big fan of his.
