I was playing Battlefront 2 for the first time last night, and something really struck me- as cool as it is to have Resistance/First Order era battles, I really don't feel like I know these factions yet. It hardly feels as familiar to play a First Order officer as it is a B1 Battle Droid, or the play a Resistance Heavy as a Rebel trooper. It just feels... a bit generic.

I do like the factions, I just feel like we haven't seen them much in action yet, I guess.

So that got me wondering- what movie features their troops in action (boots on the ground, not pilots) on both sides the best?

Just to jog your memory, here are standout moments from each film that I think feature both sides well- but if you can think of other moments, take them for consideration as well!

    The Phantom Menace
    Standout Moment: Battle of Theed
    [IMG]

    Attack of the Clones
    Standout Moment: Battle of Geonosis

    Revenge of the Sith
    Standout Moment: Battle of Utapau

    A New Hope
    Standout Moment: Tantive IV

    Empire Strikes Back
    Standout Moment: Battle of Hoth

    Return of the Jedi
    Standout Moment: Battle of Endor

    The Force Awakens
Standout Moment: Battle of Takodana (I guess? Do we see Resistance foot troops here?)

    The Last Jedi
    Standout Moment: Battle of Crait

    Rogue One

Yeah, I ended up going with that one too.

It was definitely a toss up for me- with all of Attack of the Clones' faults, it really managed to make all the Battle Droids and Clone Troopers feel "familiar" by the end of the movie, which is the opposite of how I feel about the Resistance and First Order right now. I'm not sure the Rebels in Rogue One felt that "familiar" by the end, but they were utilized really well still.

    great poll @cawatrooper :)

reading through your post of all the films, i was thinking to myself "this is gonna be so hard to pick from these!"
when i got to the bottom and saw that image of Scarif... it was actually pretty easy to pick Rogue One - which surprised me a little.

I voted for TESB because the walkers and snowspeeders are so emblematic. Also the soldiers in the trench being dezimated and Vader entering in the base is very cool.

Actually the ones that I dislike are the battles in AOTC and ROTS. It was a bad decision make the clonetroopers CGI, they look artificials.

Oh yeah, I love the scenes in the trenches. They feel really raw and gritty- maybe the most realistic depiction of war in the series.

I like that Crait had a bit of an homage to that scene, too (though did we ever really see the soldier on Crait fight? I legitimately don't remember)

Yeah, It was a great homage and does not seen as a simple copy to me (The red/salt, Kylo Shuttle stading there, that big canon...etc). I think the soldiers in Crait never left the trenchs.

    Yep.
Once the battle really opens up outside the Geonosian Arena, it gets very gritty with grimy rocket trails and all the filth in the air from artillery and explosions.
Very WW I-ish. Like the Battle of the Somme.

    For sure.

This may be one of my favorite shots in the entire prequel trilogy- it's just really in your face, gritty, and a nice down to earth departure from the more choreographed fights the PT is infamous for.

At first I was going to say ESB, but when I realized that the question was about both sides of the warring factions, I had to really think about how much screentime each group had on the ground, in-battle. We see plenty of rebel action in ESB, but not as much snowtrooper/stormtrooper action; we only really see the AT-AT's shooting laser, and the pilots moving levers. Of course we see the snowtroopers begin to shoot at the Falcon, but after that all we get is a handful of stormtroopers running around Cloud City.

Yeah, that's a really good point.

If someone only saw The Empire Strikes Back, they might be a little iffy the familiarity of Stormies.

Hey @cawatrooper this is a great thread!! Hands down Rogue One for me.....the number one reason I love this movie! It featured the ground infantry, reminded me of a war movie. The scene before they land, with Cassian's "Make 10 men feel like a hundred"......just awesome. My sons and I love the uniforms and weapons of the rebels in R1.....

Haha, I probably should've just limited this to saga films- Rogue One is just too good of an answer, because it really does showcase both sides infantries really well! ;)

Out of curiosity, for those who said R1- if we were just talking "Episode" films, which would that be for you?

Personally, I think I'd have to say Attack of the Revenge of the Sith. AotC had one really good battle, but I think we see so much more variety and persistence in the Clones and Droids in RotS.

I always thought this guy was cool
    [IMG]

The Clone marines on Mygeeto are an awesome design!

These guys remind me of scout troopers, obviously
    [IMG]

And then, just the various patterns and color schemes are so original!

And the droids too... but that's enough for now :p

Rogue One got my vote. But, for saga films, I would have to go with AotC or TPM. Which somewhat surprised me at first... But if you look at that in a grander scheme, it really makes sense when considering the evolution of warfare...

PT (WWI) : Army vs. Army, mostly ground troops with small munitions and some melee combat
OT (WWII) : Army vs. Army w/ technological advancements, with more ground vehicle and air support
ST (Modern Warfare) : Machine vs Machine (mostly ship to ship), with some small squads of specialized troops carrying out most of the ground combat.

I know there's a lot of blurring of the lines between all those, and it obviously isn't as easy as throwing labels around like that. But it is cool to be able to see that natural progression throughout the films, whether it was intentional or not.

I'd say Rogue One made the best use of foot soldiers during battle, as we get better representation from both sides than other Star Wars movie IMO.

After that, I'd have to say ROTS made really good use of the various battle droids and clone troopers during the battles. There's so much going on that sometimes you have to pay more attention to the background of some scenes.

I'd give ESB an honorable mention, as while the battle is more focused on the T-47 Snowspeeders and the AT-ATs, there is some memorable shots of the soldiers on both sides (Rebels in the trenches; Darth Vader and the Imperial Snowtroopers storming Echo Base). Plus, it feels the most realistic and gritty (well, as realistic as Star Wars gets) out of any of the battles from the main Saga films (so far) in my eyes.

I actually wanna say the opening scene on Jakku is a better ground battle. Or at least, it was because of the way it was visually depicted. It's not necessarily the Resistance vs. the First Order... but you still quickly get the vibe that it's good vs. bad.

And this scene always gets to me:

That's a good point, I hadn't thought of that scene. I do really like how it depicts the First Order ground troops. I'd love to see a scene like that with Resistance troopers, too.
