    1. A New Hope (everything from the opening scene to the medal ceremony was perfect)
    2. Revenge of the Sith (John William's very best work, and Palpatine's seduction of Anakin was great)
    3. The Phantom Menace (Darth Freakin' Maul! And another excellent soundtrack)
    4. Rogue One (Good characters and I liked the gritty realism)
    5. Return of the Jedi (Luke wins by choosing not to fight)
    6. Empire Strikes Back (Still haven't forgiven Yoda for mocking Luke when he couldn't get his X-Wing out of the mud)
    7. The Force Awakens (Can't anyone in Hollywood think of anything original anymore?)
    8. Attack of the Clones (Jango Fett vs. Obi Wan? Fun! The droid factory scene? Yawn)

It was mentioned earlier that the overall story, considered as a whole, is stronger than any single episode. I heartily agree.

That is why TV is the best medium these days, and movies are just about sequels, prequels, comic books, franchises, etc. I rarely goto the movies anymore because there are very few original movies anymore, and I can't remember the last time I saw a movie in the summer? 10-15 years ago I would rent a movie every weekend, but now I would rather binge watch some cable/streaming TV show instead.

Interesting that TFA is specifically mentioned in the title of this thread.

I honestly have so much trouble placing it. Otherwise, even with Rogue One, I pretty much know where everything falls. But Episodes VIII and IX are going to have to stand on the shoulders of TFA- and while I think TFA is good setup for what is to come, it's a decent experience on its own. It's good, for sure- but without knowing the rest of the trilogy yet, I feel like it's written a lot of checks that haven't been cashed yet, and these could turn out to be incredibly good, or horribly disappointing.

    1. The Original Trilogy in an ever-changing order.
    2. The PT , TFA, and R1 in an ever-changing order.

I believe that gives me a total of 225 different variations on my preferred order. But
    I'm not a math doctor.

The Force Awakens I truly find is a mixed bag. I don't outright hate it, but I don't love it. I'll spare a detailed analysis, but aside from the similarities with ANH criticism, my biggest critique is that it was essentially a TV pilot that said "Come and see the next one.".

As for my personal rankings for the SWs films excluding Rogue One

    1) ROTJ
    2) ESB
    3) ROTS
    4) ANH
    5) TFA
    6) TPM
    7) ATC

Despite my critiques of TFA, it is on that number five spot as really a placeholder. Plus, I find at the very least a competently made film. Unlike the rest of the Prequels. If I was to include Rogue One, it would take the five slot and TFA would be bumped down. ROTS may puzzle a lot of people and while it has a ton of problems; it is one of those films I absolutely love.

It was the end of an empire and very much felt like the story Lucas wanted to tell from the start. Too bad the rest of the trilogy sucked. But regardless, it is a film that I can always watch over and over again. ANH, I'm probably going to loose my geek card was always my least favorite of the trilogy. It is not a bad film. Far from it.

Very fun and had a lot of heart. I just found that it dragged quite a bit and some of the lines were really hooky. Not to say SWs is shakespeare, but in comparison to the other movies some of the dialogue was irksome. Seriously, Leia's british voice. I never got that. ESB is the best SWs movie. That I agree with.

But it isn't my favorite. I acknowledge it is a superior made movie, but really I find that its twist has been watered down quite a bit due to pop culture. But really it is on all clyinders with its characterization, dialogue, themes and pacing.

ROTJ is a film I hold in high regard. Many call it the weakest. And while I believe its pacing is all over the place at times, Jabba, Ewoks and its effects were a downgrade; I loved Luke Skywalker in this movie. ROTJ is my favorite era/look of Luke Skywalker. And his story wrapped up perfectly. Because SWs movie wise have always been about Luke.

And while it sucks that Han and Leia got shafted, what mattered to me was that Luke's character arc from all the way back in ANH was finished. And to me, I found it concluded on a high note. I just hope that TLJ can do its best to fit with ROTJ. But that's another discussion. :)

    1. ESB (superior: deep emotional and intelectual layers. Superior acting and pacing)
    2. TFA (next to superior: deep emotional and intelectual layers. Superior acting and pacing, some minor narrative flaws all suprisingly having to do with scenes structured around Captain Phasma)
    3. ANH (almost superior, but also highly inconsistant)

    (a lgreat void)

    4. ROTJ (severe pacing issues especially in acts 1 and 2)
    5. RO (identity issues: what does this movie try to do? What is this movie trying to be?)
    6. TPM (quite okay actually, some pacing and plot faults and of course Jar Jar)

    ( a massive void)

    7. ROTS (The movie has a beautiful story, but the performance of its actors and the center piece of the story: Anakin's fall, are unrealistically crafted and severly holding this film back)
    8. AOTC (failed in every respect)
    9. The Clone Wars (came out of the cinema vowing I would never see it again)

    Primary categories:
    1. Narratology
    2. Cinematography
    3. Emotional, poetic and symbolical layering.

In my opinion places 1,2 and 3 are so infinitely better than the rest that they should actually be a separate category.

    For me it'd be

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. A New Hope
    3. The Force Awakens
    4. Return of the Jedi
    5. The Phantom Menace
    6. Revenge of the Sith
    7. Attack of the Clones
    8. Rogue One

I personally have no gripes with The Force Awakens having similar elements to A New Hope. The Phantom Menace also mirrors A New Hope in many ways (young force sensitive person found and taken from desert planet, older wiser mentor is killed near the end, large space station is destroyed etc..)

As George Lucas always said "it rhymes, it's like poetry", I think they would be doing a disservice to George if they didn't have it mirror A New Hope... everything goes round in cycles, just like life, the planets, the solar systems, the galaxies, possibly even the universe around even greater unknown structures of existence.

Third best behind ESB and ANH. Lightyears ahead ATOC and ROTS, which have both worsened over the years.

    ESB
    ANH
    TFA
    ROTJ
    TPM
    ROTS
    ATOC

I can't lump RO in with the legacy films. But in terms of sheer enjoyment I'd put it barely behind ROTJ mainly due to the first third of the movie.

There are a ton of questions never answered in any of the previous trilogies. In fact the PT is viewed more favorably now because the The Clone Wars series that answered many of them for us.

In all fairness TFA can't be properly judged until the ST is finished because many votes for and against could be recency bias.
