Force Ghosts in VIII

I was actually meaning the more recent Rebels episode. Here their ghost form had been persistent for years, rather than a movement of spirit...

 

This is loose, and I'm typing it as I think about it, so sorry if it is a little poorly explained...
Even after his redemption, I still see Anakin's politics residing more along the lines of the first order vs the Republic. He always felt that the Republic didn't work because of the bureaucracy and needing to vote every time something needed done. Just because he chose Luke over the Emperor doesn't necessarily mean that he completely turned away from that thinking, much less, the dark side. Vader's plan from the beginning once he found out that Luke was his son was for them to overthrow the Emperor. When Vader threw the Emperor into the "pit", you can say that they did just that, from a certain point of view. That showed that there was still good in him. However having good in you doesn't exactly mean that you change your politics. So, if Anakin did come back as a Force ghost and speak to Kylo, it could have been to help him further his notion of how the galaxy should be ran.

 

This has become a much more interesting thread that I thought it would be when I clicked on it! Some very interesting ideas here.

I would be happy with absolutely no force ghosts in TLJ, to be honest. I'm not really excited to see them. I would rather the story move forward with new characters and the living characters from the OT. If there are force ghosts, I hope they use them sparingly and effectively. I don't want to see a scene with Luke, Obi-Wan, Yoda and Anakin sitting around a campfire roasting marshmallows! And I hope the only force ghosts we see are Obi-Wan and Yoda.

I really like the idea expressed earlier in this thread that Kylo was trying to commune with Anakin again but unable to. That would make him frustrated, hence him seeking out Luke to get in touch with Anakin (Vader, to him). Kylo clearly wants something from Luke, other than to just kill him. If he only wanted to kill Luke, he would not take the risk of going against his master, Snoke, as Hux mentions in TFA, "Careful, Ren, that your feelings don't get in the way of orders from Supreme Leader Snoke." Luke must have something (not necessarily something physical) that is so important to Kylo that Kylo is willing to disobey his master's orders, or at least try to do things without Snoke finding out. This could make for some very interesting scenes in TLJ!

Oh, and what about a ghost Qui-Gon???

 

Yes, I'm aware of that. What I'm saying is these spirits can still be slain, whereas force ghosts cannot be. These Nightsisters are living beings who transformed into a spiritual form, and can revert if they wish to do so. Whereas force ghosts are the spirits of deceased. They cannot be killed.

 

That's why I thought you were referring to the TCW presentation rather than the Rebels episode, the basis of which being they were seeking host bodies as they were unable to revert - which I presumed was as a result of having been dead, and thus "spirits of deceased" as you put it, for many years.

Hope you see the distinction as far as my thinking went - perhaps I picked that up wrong and they were simply living nightsisters in ethereal form.

 

That wouldnt happen because jedi dont "chew" people out...but anakin seems the most likely besides yoda..

 

Yoda and Mace both scolded Anakin. They were both pretty brash in the PT.

I got to thinking about this but hasn't a Force Ghost shown up in the ST already?

The force vision had all kinds of voices with old dialogue but Obi Wan's was the only voice in real time as she is coming out of the vision.

 

Same here, everytime i see Hayden at the end of ROTJ i look for a brick to throw at the screen

 

Yeah. That change was the worst ever.

 

Sometimes I can't help but feel that all this Anakin force ghost chat is just a deflection from our real sense of loss at that other change made to the end of ROTJ.

I refer to, of course, the Yub Nub song!

I keep wondering exactly what Kylo Ren did experience when he supposedly communed with his grandfather (as some have pointed out here, he did say, "Show me again...")

What still keeps coming to me is that Snoke has taught Kylo a method of sensing energy echoes from artifacts that were once owned and used by Force users - but he allows Kylo to believe that rather than sensing echoes of the presence of an artifact's owner, he is actually hearing the spirit of the deceased.

This would explain Kylo's obsession with obtaining objects owned by his grandfather (the mask, the lightsaber) and his belief that he's communing with his grandfather's spirit through the mask - perhaps he's actually just catching echoes of Anakin's life as Darth Vader.

Because it really doesn't track with the OT at all that Anakin, after being redeemed at the end of ROTJ, would suddenly turn around and start mentoring his grandson in the ways of the dark side. Snoke showing Kylo a trick to sense energy echoes from Jedi and Sith artifacts, but conning him into believing that he's actually communing with a spirit... that sounds a lot more plausible to me.

Whether or not Anakin's actual spirit turns up in TLJ or Episode IX to set his grandson straight, I have no idea. Personally, I'd prefer that he didn't, as I've already seen more than enough of Hayden's "Darth BoyBand" character. But, perhaps that would be the only way to disabuse Kylo of his delusion that he's been learning the ways of the dark side from his grandfather by navel-gazing at the remains of his helmet.

 

I just realized that Luke never spoke with a Yoda Force Ghost. He was just chillin at the end of ROTJ. haha That would be rad to see.
