Wouldn't it be awesome to see on the big screen Yoda, Obi Wan's, or Anakin's force ghost?! I think at the very least Yoda would be a nice surprise if only as a cameo in TFA.

I know that the old EU isn't canon anymore, but one thing I particularly liked about it was the idea that Force Ghosts weren't permanent; Luke's opening scene in Heir to the Empire is Obi Wan visiting him once last time to say goodbye, explaining that the further from death one's spirit becomes, the harder it is to stay connected to the physical realm. So it is conceivable that after training Yoda and Obi Wan, Qui Gon finally gave himself back to the Force; after Obi Wan and Yoda finally finish teaching Luke (including how to become a ghost himself), they gave themselves back too. Anakin...idk, I always got the feeling that he was a special case, that he was able to retain himself for only a short period of time in order to see Luke and Leia one last time.

But that could all be null and void now, Force Ghosts could stick around for as long as they wish. It could be neat, but if Rey (and/or Finn) can communicate with Ghost-Yoda, why does Luke need to train her/them and not his own Master? I'm not totally against the idea of seeing one or all of them again, but there's some major issues that would have to be dealt with.

I will be VERY surprised if Anakin doesn't show up at some point in the ST. I also think Yoda is likely as he's so popular and, in a way, totally Star Wars....

I don't have a problem with force ghosts, as long as they serve the plot and story.

I'm torn in this matter. On one side, in the "Legends" expanded universe it was detailed that force ghosts perish in time and I thought it was a terrible idea. On the other hand, Disney may force JJ's or other directors' hand to squeeze in a Yoda or Palpatine force ghosts for "nostalgic appeal" to mass audience (Disney clearly stated Darth Vader is too big of a character for them to shelf) and it will harm the story.

If it's done, it should be tasteful and serve the story!

I think it would be great if the first time we're introduced to Luke in TFA, it's his disembodied voice. The next time we see him, it's as a Force ghost. Just when the audience is convinced he's dead we get to meet him in the flesh. He's learned how to project himself as a "force ghost" through meditation and reach out to other force sensitives.

I know that the EU established that force ghosts were only around for a limited time, but I keep coming back to in ROTJ when Luke says I can't go on alone, and the voice of ObiWan said "Yoda will always be with you", like maybe there is a special connection there that Luke will always be able to communicate with Yoda like a personal spiritual guide.

I'll be honest, the "why isn't Qui Gon a force ghost" threads back in the day were tiresome for me, because it ignored the poetic and dramatic purpose for why the ghosts were included in the first place.

The dramatic purpose of the ghosts in ROTJ were a poetic device to show the audience that Yoda , Anakin and OB1's spirits were at peace with Luke's actions. It also showed us that Anakin had been redeemed fully.

I don't see the need in VII for that kind of poetic device.

I do think Kylo is trying to commune with Anakin at one point (the rubber room scene with the mask). Whether he succeeds or not probably a long source of debate after VII is over. Was he really talking to Anakin, or is he delusional and/or being manipulated by an outside force?

Also I warn you all: Episode VII is going to provide a lot more questions than answers. That's part of VII's mission, to set up the franchise for another long run at the box office.

And JJ loves loose ends and lots of them to keep the audience guessing, that was the entire appeal of LOST. It's why I believe we'll get nothing but hints and conflicting evidence as to the lineage of Kylo, Rey and maybe even Finn.

With that ROTJ quote in mind, I think it's quite likely that Yoda will make some kind of appearance in the sequel trilogy (even it's just his voice). Or at the very least, I can see Luke making some kind of reference to him.

I think if he was to make a appearance his voice would be better, I'm just saying after hearing his voice in the rebel series it was better than his ghostly appearance.

I believe we will continue to see force ghosts, but only at places like abandoned Jedi temples and desolate force-enriched planets.

The only time we really saw Obi Wan and Yoda's force ghosts was on Dagobah, arguably a very force sensitive planet without many life forms.. Perhaps this allowed them to appear to Luke far easier than on other planets. We only saw force ghosts for a few seconds at a time in other places.

We saw them on Hoth and Endor too.
But I do agree that they should keep them on some special planets, temples and similar ( places where force is especially strong ).

Thats what i'm saying. Obi Wan clearly could only talk to Luke for a short time on Hoth.. and they only appeared for a few seconds on Endor. There must be a reason they were able to appear for longer and drink a beer with Luke on Dagobah.

It can't hurt for Force Ghosts to appear, but if they don't appear, I don't need any explanation (such as the one in Heir to the Empire). I think that ghosts being temporary destroys the whole point of them.
Sith can't become ghosts. They're captivated by the physical realm (there's a reason that Vader was willing to become "more machine than man") and you have to be in harmony with The Force to become a ghost.
