SPECULATION Forest Whitaker's Character Discussion

That's great news. He's one hell of a good actor.

One of my favorite performances was his Oscar winning portrayal of Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland.

Absolutely brilliant.

with the recent rumor of "vader experts" being called back for Rogue One, is it possible they're forgoing JEJ for Whitaker in this case? Perhaps he can emulate a "younger" vader better than they can modify JEJ's voice to sound more like it did way back when.
Some people were complaining that he was too recognizable for a SW role, and this would be a way to have a big name, (as opposed to a big face, lol) involved without pulling audiences out of the experience.

I don't think so. JEJ voice is pretty well known as Vader's voice and most of the fans probably wouldn't have an issue if it didn't sound exactly the way it did in ANH. He still voices Vader in Rebels and it does sound different to me and I really haven't heard too many complaints about that.

 

I like Forest Whitaker, looking forward to seeing what role he'll be playing.

Forest Whittaker is portraying an on-screen character. He's not doing voice acting.

 

That comment was made back last year. @DarthHendrix had no idea if he was going to appear on-screen or not.

 

I thought the same, his outfit looks like it's borrowed from the Fallout series.

 

I think he's playing a really seasoned bounty hunter type. He's seen it all done it all. Gonna warn Erson about tangling with the empire.

 

I know I'm probably in the minority here, but FW is one of those actors that immediately take me out of the film when I see them. Like Tom Cruise, or Nicholas Cage, as soon as I see their face I see the actor, not the character.

His short appearance in the teaser seemed very hammy to me, so I'm hoping he comes in, puts those questions in the main characters' minds and goes on his way.

Also, I'm putting my money on a prosthetic leg. Or two, haha!

 

haha as soon as I saw him in the trailer I remembered making that speculation and felt stupid.
But at the same time I'm glad I was wrong because, damn, his character looks awesome.

 

I find it interesting that in his lines from the trailer, he says "WHEN" you get caught and "IF" they break you. Is Jyn's mission or idea to get caught? Is that her way in the DS? Or is her plan to slip in with that black Imperial outfit? Does she seek his council on her plan and he doesn't agree? Is he a retired bounty hunter or rebel?

 

According to Wikipedia his character's name is Rogue and is a Clone Wars vet but it isn't cited.

 

I feel like he just said when because he's certain that the plan will fail

 

I'm wondering if he's even talking about her? Or perhaps he's talking about himself, because he looks like he's been through some tough stuff and been scarred by it (both physically, those rumors about him missing a leg are seemingly pretty likely now, and possibly psychologically).

Maybe he fought in TCW and has PTSD as a result, it wouldn't be the first time that there was misleading editing in trailers (heck TFA had that).
