I am reminded of this Q&A with Timothy Zahn where he speculated that all the EU material could ultimately become canon again so long as it doesn't contradict the new stories --> starwarsnewsnet.com/2014/07/timothy-zahn-thrawn-mara-jade-new-star-wars-canon.html

The relevant quote from the article:

What the “non-canon” announcement by LFL means is that they aren’t going to be bound by the Expanded Universe books, comics, and games as they plan their new movies. Realistically, that’s something they had to do — the EU is just too big, complicated, and occasionally contradictory for them to have to deal with. However, I’m guessing that EU stories that aren’t referenced (or contradicted) by the sequel movies will still be considered sort-of alive, in the same way that most Clone Wars-era stories (like Outbound Flight) were mostly unaffected, with the exception being all of the previous material on Boba Fett’s backstory. Alternatively, if the new movies do contradict my books in some way, I can probably come up with some hand-waving story that will explain the apparent discrepancy. If there’s one thing we authors are good at, it’s hand-waving.

I loved the old EU and am one of the biggest fans, but I don't think entire stories can be easily imported. Major rectons had to be made around the prequels. I'd love love love to see a few of the bigger characters adapted for the new canon.

I think they should adapt some of the old stories as direct to video animated specials. A 90 special for each Thrawn book would somewhat eviscerate the original story, but they'd have to cut a lot of the elements that didn't fit anyways.

If the actor is actually telling the truth then Star Wars is starting to creep into the "too much fan service" lane .

I would love to see Kyle Kartarn in rebels. His story in Legends started around this time frame.

I think talking about fan service concerning Star Wars of today doesn't make much sense, because basically everybody working on it is at the same time a fan. So yeah, they add things the fans will love, but it comes more from what the creators themselves love. And I don't see anything wrong about this. Especially Filoni and his team has made lot of Legends canon again, but every time in a way that fits the story and enriches it. Because there are so many great ideas in there!

There are some really cool ideas but what I meant was that putting in things like rehab and all would be something a normal viewer would be like  while us fans would be like :) so when unsay "fan service" I meant like for hardcore fans and something that we would really love...however now that I think about it for them to add this stuff wouldn't make much of a difference to a general viewer because they'd just think it's a brand new character and another new toy

Yeah, precisely, they just have to make sure they treat it as a new thing in the story. I believe they are very much aware that majority of their audience are casual viewers without any knowledge of either old EU nor new canon books and comic, so they can't rely on explaining things elsewhere.

Ok, so EU is no longer cannon, blah, ect. But that doesn't mean you have to throw tne baby out with the bath water. Why wouldn't you draw on juicy character and story ideas? Plus, you already know what the fans loved and didn't, and what worked well, and didn't, so that cuts the risk down for the producers, AND you can mould it to your own ends to make it 'new cannon'. Good writers can kill the two birds of casual viewers and fanatical fans with the one plot device, so why wouldn't you import as you liked? In a way, the writers are like djs taking samples of old music and creating new music. Some people think it's a travesty, and others just enjoy the new art for what it is.

I really, really hope its not Thrawn. I highly doubt he would be done properly and that would make me a sad chiss. :(

I don't see why any EU character would have to be explained, when new characters are not. A new Imperial is a new Imperial, casual viewers wouldn't care if he/she has never been seen before or if they've showed up in a comic or book 20 years ago.

They have been doing that with Warner Bros animation the last few years for some of the more popular batman, superman, justice league and flash comic book stories.

and they did that with a lot of the most popular x-men stories in the 90s

i really don't know WHY were not getting more stand alone star wars cartoon stuff.

just those crappy star wars lego shows. those don't count towards canon.. don't know why they cant do some cool animated star wars stuff. and some star wars anime stuff
    and a bounty hunter movie
    and legends stuff
    and EU stuff
    etc
    etc
