The fan service issue will always come up with so many differing views over where the story should end up, BUT I personally feel like it would be a fan disservice to create characters matching archetypes from the EU without using that character. If I am Disney and I take the story to a place that needs a brilliant ruthless tactician do I want to create a character the fan community will call "knockoff Thrawn"? We may not get a Mara Jade or whoever we each personally want, but they won't lose new/casual fans by bringing in certain EU characters. They can however, drive spirited discussion and invigorate the more rabid wings of the fan base. It's just like Empire Jo said.

 

Thanks. Found it. That was fan art by a guy that also did a Mara Jade and Palleon. Concept art for TCW starts as 2-d sketches, then maquettes. They don't just render the character to start.

Well, it isn't like thrawn has a monopoly on "brilliant ruthless tactician". I'd only say he is a knock off if he also studied the art of his opponents to defeat them.

This next bit isn't directed at you. I sometimes see fans say that any female inquisitor would be a "mara jade type" character. To me, the are a lot of factors that would make them a ----- type character.

thrawn- alien, outsider, brilliant, uses art to defeat enemies, demanding but not cruel
jade- reports to emperor, assassin, outside normal chain of command
