Hello all! Although I enjoyed Episodes 7 and 8, I am a bit perplexed about some of the so-called loose ends relating to the story so far. TFA in particular introduced us to so much new stuff and questions remain open to a number of topics.

This thread is to list 3 topics you think are still open that you'd like to see closed, or closed more definitively. For fun, please include your speculation or an idea for how it might be resolved. Thanks for playing along!

    For example:
    1. Snoke's Backstory--We were told Snoke is not a Sith yet he appears to walk like a Sith, talk like a Sith, and act likes a Sith. It seems to make story sense that Snoke would not be a Sith since Anakin was supposedly the Chosen One to end the Sith (not join them!). Yet we get no exposition on who Snoke really is in TLJ or TFA. Potential Resolution: In Episode IX, Kylo learns more about the Dark Ways of Snoke. He discovers that Snoke is an ancient wizard from a far away galaxy--a Dark Evil that predates the Sith. His main power is that he is an evil spirit that has learned the power to cheat death. Realizing Snoke's spirit still lives, Kylo must find a way to destroy the ancient spirit before it returns to exact its revenge on him. Kylo learns that the Sith had been scouring the galaxy for clues about how to learn this unnatural power. Palpatine and Vader (and before them Plagueis) learned some of this power yet they never mastered it. This is also why Palpatine was scouring the Unknown Regions and had numerous research labs and observation points in far reaches of the galaxy.
    2. Luke's Exile--There's more to the story of Luke's exile on Ahch-To. It seems difficult to think the Luke from ESB, who ditched Jedi training to save his friends, would really be so grumpy and depressed to exile himself while his friends were in trouble. Potential Resolution: Rey learns from Force Ghost Luke that Snoke knew his whereabouts. Luke explains that Snoke could essentially track his Force power across the galaxy. That is why Luke left his friends--so they would be safe from Snoke and the First Order. This is also why Luke cut himself off from the Force (to hide from Snoke) and went searching for the First Jedi Temple--in hopes to learn about the ancient evil spirit Snoke and how to defeat it. Luke also knows Snoke can cheat death. Luke is frustrated on Ahch-To because he didn't find the answer for how to defeat Snoke in the Jedi writings. In TFA, Snoke was desperate to find Luke, fearing Luke might discover a way to end him. Snoke wanted to use Starkiller Base on Luke's location in TFA. Once the map to Luke was lost to the First Order, Snoke reluctantly agreed with Hux to use Starkiller on the Republic planets. Force Ghost Luke is now worried that Snoke will now be able to track down Rey since her powers have grown strong enough to be detected. He puts Rey and Kylo on a mission to work together to discover the power to defeat Snoke before his recovering spirit returns to human form.
    3. The Knights of Ren--We get nothing on these dudes in TLJ. All we know is that Snoke says Kylo is the Master of the Knights of Ren and that they were standing in the rain around Kylo and a bunch of dead bodies in a flashback scene of unknown origin. Potential Resolution: The Knights are the fallen Jedi from Luke's academy that were also influenced by Snoke and convinced to defect with Ben Solo. Kylo and the Knights learned dark powers from Snoke via an ancient text called the Book of Ren. The Book of Ren was incomplete, missing teachings on eternal life--something only Snoke had mastered. Kylo, the Knights, the Praetorian Guards, maybe others--they all studied under Snoke via teachings from the Evil Book of Ren. The Knights are introduced in Episode IX, some of them beginning to question their decision to go to the Dark Side now that Snoke has less influence over them while is spirit regenerates. Kylo and Rey (and Force Ghost Luke) come to realize that in order to defeat Snoke, they must work together to search not for ancient Jedi texts or temples, but for ancient Sith or dark side texts to discover and overcome the power to cheat death.
Love to hear your own thoughts on how the ST will wrap things up!

I was wondering the same about the force vision from TLJ. Half has become clear. The other is the knights and Rey saying come back to the ship (still say it’s kylo before he left with the knights)

I would love to know more of the kingihts of REN and I know JJ loved them, however not as a detriment to story and pace

Despite Kylo Ren staying with the First Order, I think he is still conflicted and finds himself infatuated with Rey. The Knights of Ren I think will be used as a way to test his allegiance and his possible redemption back towards the light. I see them poisoning his mind, egging him on and promoting his erratic behavior. We could possibly see conflict within the knights themselves. Some back Kylo, others back Hux, and others are conflicted by the dark side and have an existential crisis with the Force.

Kylo and Rey have never truly disconnected and Rey attempts to reach "Ben" and still believes that he can be redeemed. We could see a scenario where Kylo must again choose his allegiance, the light or dark. Rey or the Knights of Ren?

For Luke I don't think they'll dwell too much on his past in Achto. Luke becomes a legend. His sacrifice in Crate is told through the witnesses who saw his battle with Kylo Ren and gives the message of hope throughout the Galaxy. He becomes a rallying cry that helps to rekindle the opposition against the First Order.

With a few years passing, Rey has been taught through the books with Force ghost Luke the ways of the Jedi. There are things though that Rey and Luke begin to mull over such as some of the old dogmatic rules, particularly the question of "love" and attachment. Are these feelings that the new Jedi should embrace or should they be discouraged? She finds herself conflicted as her connection with Ben remains and both find themselves attached, or dare I say in love.

Luke encourages Rey to pass on what she has learned and attempt to find an apprentice. There have been many rumors of the Force finding itself awaken to the most unlikely of people. Can anyone truly tap their potential and awaken the Force within? Finn the former janitor stormtrooper becomes the test dummy. Finn undergoing this training harkens back to his days as a brainwashed stormtrooper and finds himself conflicted and unable to truly tap into the Force.

He doesn't have to put the mask back on for it to be a vision of the future. Force visions don't give you an exact look on what will play out. Remember in Rey's vision she comes face to face with Kylo Ren in the forrest on Starkiller base. In the vision he has his mask on, later when that actually happens he does not.

Snoke's backstory, Rey's origins and Ben's downfall I would love to see explained.

The knights of Ren, and Luke's exile as well.
There's a lot to come in Ep 9 if they're going to explain all that (and the rest) in just one more movie.

Knights of Ren most definitely. I doubt we'd be getting any explanation about the rest. Unless Snoke returns (unlikely) I doubt'd they'd waste screen time to a dead character. Although it would be great.

Since this option isn't on the list I'd like to add: Context to the global political situation. This has been one of my top issues with the ST so far. We barely have any information about what happened and what's happening in the Republic...

Rey's confrontation with her past of course, the only question that does not have a definitive answer by all accounts: of course a fundamental element of Rey psychological struggles to begin with. All the other questions have either been answered sufficiently by the narrative or are 'perhaps' dysfunctional to it.

Though, I don't mind having them answer my own questions, so I would love to know more about the Knights of Ren and the fate of the students who rebelled with Kylo! Would be funny if they had names like the dwarves in the Hobbit. :p

I picked the Knights of Ren, only because I can already guess that we won't get any answers about the others.

Snoke was basically a plot device so bringing him back or expanding his lore is pointless.

We already know a bit about Luke on Ach-To. Besides, he's dead now so do we really need to waste time on it?

Starkiller base was always a complete load of s*** so hopefully JJ won't fall into the trap of recycling that idea again!

We may get more info on the first order through exposition seen during the knights of ren scenes. I wouldn't hold my breath though.

We already know everything we need to about Finn. It's where he's going that is important.

I would hope that they keep away from explaining force ghosts as TLJ was already borderline bending the lore to make Yoda's act a possibility.

I can see Ben's fall being detailed in extra source materials but not touched by IX. There isn't much time at this point for exposition.

Rey is up for debate. If JJ has balls then he'll keep her as a noone. I know it will massively annoy a lot of fans, however the message that she came from nothing resonates strongly with a lot of people.

    Just my 2p! :)

the only thing i want more about is the First Order. we've had hints of its origins in the EU, but i'd love to see some of this brought into the films so that people can understand better about what a truly messed up organization it is.

I think they have to explain Snoke and the First Order, becuase so far it just seems to be they wanted to bring back the Emporer and the Empire so they did bring them back but just re named them.

They have to show they put a bit more thought into it then that!!!!.... please please let them have put more thought into it then that!!!!

Really hope so, it will be so disappointing if it is like it seems, they just brought back the Empire and an Emperor becuase the original trilogy had that.

I agree: there is a good deal of stuff out there that could be wrapped up and arguably should be wrapped up for the ST to be satisfying.

In the back of my head, I’m a bit worried that this Sequel Trilogy might not actually be a trilogy after all... Given the amount of money being made, I wouldn’t put it past Disney to make the ST into 4 movies or make Episode 9 part 1 and Episode 9 part 2 a few years later (a la Hunger Games) and then combine them to sell it as a single (long) movie years later.

If they have decided to do this, I doubt we’d learn about it until the last minute (since some fans might be outraged).

    Rey.

Since 2 stinking drunk bum Junkers is not the deep and profound answer LFL mouthpieces told us in would be in 2016.

Pretty f****** far from it actually.

If I took time out to think of the most shallow, and unprofound answer I still don't think I would have came up with that rot.

    WEAK.

    In 9 we trust.

Knights of Ren. I think TLJ blew the opportunity to get into Snoke.

I really just need a good movie, but I would like if JJ explored Knights of Ren and answer if they have anything to do with Luke's former students who went with Kylo. If so, why no lightsabers? They would have certainly took them.

A bit more about Kylo's fall from the horse's mouth would not hurt because we only have hearsay from others, but it's more important where he goes from the end of TLJ. Everything else, Snoke, Rey, Luke... was either answered or is not needed for the story going forward. But, yes, Knights of Ren, definitely. They should be what Praetorian Guard was for Snoke in TLJ. As we saw, one scene could be impactful and since Kylo will play much larger role in EPIX than Snoke, they could have appropriately bigger screen time as his personal guard.
