Hi all! So I have a dream, and I'd love to see it become a reality - and think it could, with the help of others. I'd love to see the day when a nationwide (and worldwide for that matter) week-long Star Wars camping cosplay event, becomes a reality. Now let me tell you about my similar experience, and what I envision.
Years ago, I was very active in the SCA. (a worldwide medieval reenactment group) and recently thought, "hey, why can't the Star Wars community have it's own version of Pennsic?!" http://www.pennsicwar.org/penn44/geninfo.html Pennsic is the "big event" within the SCA, It's a must-go-to for all members.
For those not in the know, the SCA is a "from the roman era up through the mid 1500s" reenactment society (generally medieval though) where members cosplay during events, (camping, one day, one night, weekend, etc.) and do the things within that world (fighting, dancing, archery, cooking, whatever) that each person is drawn to. (most groups within the society are very organized, have weekly practices, etc. So if you're into medieval dancing, you most likely belong to a local group that meets once a week, for example. People are also into many pursuits within the SCA, so one person maybe be into: sword & shield fighting, dancing, and archery. Pennsic is a 2 week long camping event in Penn., that SCAdians from all over the country (this past summer 10,556 people attended) as well as from other countries. It's a blast staying in costume for the entire time you're there, not only doing the activities you love, but also having awesome camaraderie!
So why not us?! I'm looking for other visionaries who want to help make this into a reality! If they can do it, we certainly can too! I envision members of the 501rst, the rebel legion, the R2-D2 builder's club, as well as enthusiastic Star Wars cosplayers from all over, as to being those who would attend. Think about it- staying in your character cosplay the whole week, visiting a cantina, have mock battles as LARPers do, visiting an endless area of SW vendors! (Pennsic has hundreds of vendors that totally adds to the fun, being able to buy and browse)
I'm in New England, and wouldn't expect this would be on the east coast, as I'd want the whole country to have access to this event. I'm thinking somewhere towards the middle of the country, would probably make sense. The venue would have to be a huge campground, that ideally this event would someday entirely take over. I'm sure in the beginning, this will not be the case by any stretch of the imagination. If this event became huge someday, I'd also envision people from the SW universe attending as well. (actors, Lucasfilm, writers, toy manufacturers, video game producers, etc.) Maybe this could become, someday, a "camping cosplay Celebration" kind of event!
So what do you think? I'd love to hear your thoughts ......
