The duo responsible for bringing you Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are bringing their talents to Lucasfilm, to write and produce another new series of Star Wars films!

In a post just released on StarWars.com, the Emmy award winning series creators were announced to be developing yet another series of films in the Star Wars franchise!

The duo most known for their work transforming George R. R. Martin's book series into arguably one of the greatest television series of all time are now entering the Star Wars universe. The films will not be connected to the Skywalker saga, nor the previously announced trilogy coming from The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson.

Benioff and Weiss released a joint statement regarding their new exciting venture:

In speaking about the duo, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said:

A question some fans may be asking is, what else are they known for? In addition to Game of Thrones Benioff is known for writing the novel The 25th Hour, and the script for the movie of the same name. He also wrote the films Brothers, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Troy, and The Kite Runner. Weiss' resume doesn't have as many credentials, however in addition to writing Game of Thrones, he is responsible for also producing and directing for the series.

There is no doubt fans constantly begging for a Knights of the Old Republic film or television series will immediately point to that being the reason Weiss and Benioff were brought in, but that remains to be seen as no other details have been made available. We will keep you updated as more information on this news is revealed.

It was a smart move on StarWars.com's part to bring up Rian Johnson's trilogy, to avoid the spark of any unnecessary rumors that this may be a shift from his project. Quite the contrary, as this is in addition, and separate from Johnson's films, spreading the Star Wars galaxy even further into the galaxy far, far away.

Great. Now there are TWO of them!

Honestly though, I'm down for some more Star Wars. Maybe this could be an Old Republic trilogy...

I mean, ain't this IRONIC. For a while now, many people who don't like Disney's sequel trilogy have been saying "They should just let the makers of Game of Thrones make Star Wars films instead".

    LOL! :D :D :D

Star Wars doesn't need to be always dark and gritty, I don't know, so it sounds more like just more standalone films, but not as trilogy like Rian's. Star Wars doesn't need to be rated R or TV-MA.

Wow, that's bonkers. Could be awesome though - KOTOR anyone?

I think they can handle it, but it does seem strange that we're getting two new series announced so close together.

Side note: RJ confirmed his trilogy wasn't KOTOR, but it's still fair game for these two. I think the different setting, politically fragmented galaxy, and cloak and dagger mystique of the Old Republic would fit in well with these two's GOT experience.

I personlly think they're repurposing the concept of Anthologies into these films and will focus on "dark and gritty" aspects of SW canon.

It should be noted, however, that both of them are writers at heart. They've only directed one episode of Game of Thrones each, while they've written basically all of them.

A great story is the foundation of a great film. However I can't help but feel like they should be kept as writers only, and a more experienced director should direct the films.

I'm seeing a lot of, "Oh great... more Star Wars" comments and I just don't understand it. We've been told this was happening ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm, we're getting at least one movie a year every year for the next 293492190390423 years, this isn't a realization that should just be setting in now.

There's also the people that think DB and Dave ruined GOT once they ran out of book material, I disagree but to each their own.

    --

The most interesting thing to me in all of this is what this means for the standalone films. We've now had an official statement on Rian Johnson's new trilogy AND DB and Dave's series of films, but still nothing on Obi-Wan. I really think they might have scrapped the standalone idea after having such big problems on both standalone productions. It seems like they're moving in a direction where they're collaborating with trusted people for extended periods of time instead of jumping to a new writer/director every year.

I guess there's a chance though that these films won't be connected to each other. They didn't use the word trilogy like they did with Rian, they're calling this a series of films. Maybe the standalone concept hasn't been scrapped and they'll just be working with Dave and DB to develop them all.

They would fit perfectly for a Knights of the Old Republic series... I’m guessing we will end up with a new film each year alternating between their series & RJ’s

I have a feeling that the days of writing prequel movies are over. No more Rogue One or Solo like movies, but movies with a purpose.......a direction.

I must say I'm surprised. But in a good way. I'm have a sense they're going for a more mature version of Star Wars (Benioff and Weiss) next to the more traditional one (i.e. RJ's trilogy).

This might even be a flagship project for the new Disney streaming service. Instead of a TV series of episodes, they might be going for a full series of feature films.

    ....that's what I would do.

I hope not. Rogue One is the best thing Disney has produced so far, in my mind.

Why not bring back Gareth Edwards then if they want someone they can trust?

It's interesting that they refer to it as a series of films, rather than a trilogy. To me, "a series" is more than two, but the implication would be that it's somewhat open ended.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The statement specifically mentions the Rian Johnson trilogy - so it doesn't seem as though this is a replacement. It also seems unlikely that they would give up on the Star Wars Story films so quickly. Rogue One was a huge hit and when over well with fans, and Solo's performance is still undecided.

My suspicion is that we're going to start getting more than one film a year in the near future - maybe not 2 a year, but at least 3 every two years.

The best part is that it's clear that KK has decided not to start a new run of films with no vision for where future installments will go.

I guess we don't need a spinoff film every other year, but I still think they'd be useful every so often, just to allow for a bit more creative freedom with the series. I still love the idea of having spinoff films be a springboard to bring different genres to the series.

Overkill. Sameyness. Loses its specialness. Imagine if the year had Christmas Day every day. Star Wars should not be as mundane and as regular as a soap opera or a news bulletin.

Except it's more like "Christmas day every year", which most people don't have a problem with... :p
