Not every piece of SW material has to appeal to every demographic.
Their little show that's aimed almost exclusively at young girls is fine.
Rebels is largely aimed at young kids as well.
Some of the books are clearly aimed almost exclusively at adults.

They may not go "full" Game of Thrones, but they can certainly go adult.

And the central question will always be WHY.

    Star Wars
never needed R or NC-17 level content to be amazing, appealing to adults, or to be provocative in some major manner.

Start down that path, and that will dominate their destiny and soil this franchise unnecessarily, I believe.

Surely, they will attract some new viewers, engaging in such unapologetically lewd tactics, but they will also certainly lose others. Myself included.

Even as I remain phenomenally open-minded as to many possible Star Wars storylines, past and future chronologically, I cannot see any defensible reason for this franchise to descend to such dire depths.

Again, Star Wars is not nor will it never be, in my mind, GOT. And, as I see it, that's a very good thing.

I hope like hell we don't get GOT Star Wars. Yes I would like an adult Star Wars movie, but not that much. I think I'd get sick. You shouldn't be ashamed to bring your family to a Star Wars movie.

Because there is a market for it.
There are people who want it.
There are stories that can be told best in a more mature situation.
They should be told that way not watered down or avoided.
When you intentionally water down a story for that, you get The Wolverine or X-Men Origins Wolverine. When you let a story just be properly told, you get Logan.

No it won't. What evidence is there that you think it will take over Star Wars that goes beyond just YOU don't want it?

Why would you think it would be something appropriate to take your family to at all if it has an adult rating?
That's a you problem not a them problem.

I have to agree. I like mature contents in films, TV, games, whatever, but I don't want R-rated Star Wars. Some heavy stuff will never fit in this universe IMHO. This "lightness" (for lack of a better word) is a part of the Star Wars DNA. That may be one of the elements essential for Star Wars to remain "Star Wars."

Game of Thrones is not the only thing they have worked in. The fact that they will make Star Wars movies doesn't automatically mean they will have a similar tone to Game of Thrones.

I consider those among the weakest reasons.

Star Wars is something embraced by families, teachers, even spiritual leaders worldwide for decades, and GOT grade content (and you know what I am talking about) would take Star Wars down a path many of us, and them, could no longer follow.

And here's the really the most perfect quote, I think, just a post above:

    THIS!

    Thank you, Finn_McCool.

It's like fan service - not always good. You know, there's a market for Episode VIII reboot too.

There is no mass market, current or pending, for GOT grade adult content in Star Wars.

Content of any kind -- stories, music, art -- created purely to satisfy a market -- particularly a market of the moment -- at most a trend in contemporary entertainment -- is not only potentially weak but debatably reprehensible and, at the very least, ill-advised.

Star Wars is, thus far, inherently timeless in its mythopoeic approach to earthy yet refined epic storytelling.

Those myths and their resultant archetypes and symbols have been shared, retold, and reinterpreted over millennia by countless civilizations, and that's always given Star Wars the foundation it has needed to build further stories upon.

Star Wars taps into that timelessness and relies decidedly on a rare blend of great storytelling, imagery, and music, to produce a culturally-inclusive grade of entertainment, something of a vastly superior quality to most of the filler failing to pack cinemas these days.

And that's all it ever needs, as I see it.

    "I am not a committee."

Please, before you say things like this, prove it.

    Again, prove it.

You say this, but it actually flies in the face of everything known about this sort of medium. And don't act like Star Wars is some kind of high art.
Why did Star Wars become uber kid friendly under Lucas? Because that's where the market really was ie TOYS

Satisfying a market need is not fan service.
Yes because they're comparable. Clearly dealing with ration and not strawman is neat....
    Have a good one.

Why are you even arguing this point? They aren't going to make Star Wars movies with graphic violence and nudity. KK isn't going to want that. Disney isn't going to want that. It doesn't fit with the brand. It doesn't make business sense. It's not going to happen.

I like Rogue One quite a bit as well though I don't agree it is the best and Disney and LFL may not trust Edwards as much as you do considering the reshoot scenario.

They may well perceive the situation where they had to jump in to save the day and spend a lot of money doing it.

They also may not be so confident in him creating from the premise up, I know I'm not.

Or they may be pleased as punch with him but have still yet other plans for him.

Maybe he is is engaged in other projects already for some time and won't be available to get into a Star Wars production.

It's a funky time for large corporations and international investors in the crazy world of financial speculation.
I wouldn't be surprised if the timing of such press releases is partially related to the fact that optimism is also tied to purchasing - after all, the index that tells us how well our economy is going is the index of consumer confidence.
Sorry @JediMasterRobert - I love you man - but there's a ranty reply addressing some of the points you raised incoming... :p

It sounds like your assuming a correlation between adult content and inferior story that has yet to be established.
As someone who sometimes edits out nudity in movies so other (adult) family members can still enjoy them, I've haven't come across any such correlation.
Have you even watched a series of GOT?

Personally I sometimes feel a little sad for some of the people in my family who are missing out on shows they'd probably like just because...
    • they live in a home where some people were raised to find the human body offensive or something to be ashamed of,
    • or they claim to find the bad things that the bad guys do a little too bad sometimes,
    • or they don't like the concept of anti-heros, anti-villains, or complex characters with virtues and flaws. :(
That's like saying you're excluding audiences when you add other sections to a library other than the children's section.
It's not a zero sum game. Making R-rated RO didn't deprive kids of SW content. At worst the SW content will only be "lost" to them until they're adults.
    Why not?
I understand the need to keep adult themes away from immature minds but it's the adults who want to divest other adults from mature content that worries me.

If I really like potatoes, but found potato without it's skin offensive, why would I want to deprive others of the opportunity for them to enjoy peeled potatos?
Why censor adult elements of a story that fit or inform the plot just because some children won't be able to watch it?
That would be like banning adult sport's because the children can't play too.
Have you seen the end of Rogue One? It doesn't "need" the R-rated content to be "amazing, or appealing to adults" but it sure adds value to the story.

How far does this assumption that adult content is just window dressing go? Do sacred books include all their mature content just to "appeal to adults or be provocative in some major manner"?

I guess I'm just struggling with idea there's people who are fine with SW genocide, infanticide, patricide, and fathers chopping their kid's limbs off but are offended by nipples and bottoms!

Again - love you work Jedi Master. ;)
    Edit: poor ranty grammar

At the end of the day it's all about the story. Some of the best movies ever made were PG rated. If you have to add graphic violence and sex to sell to adults, then that tells you the story kind of sucks.
There's no reason to have much blood and gore in a SW movie, because they use lasers that don't draw blood. Of course there's a market for Star Wars porn, but that doesn't mean it should be done.

As a producer you want a story that will add value and maximize revenue.
As a consumer you want a story that delivers to your personal taste but may also surprise and challenge you a little too.

As a SW consumer I'm looking forward to a diverse range of stories - that way everybody has something to enjoy.

We've been in a stage for a while where SW stories are varied and catered to different preferences and age groups.
Gone are the days when you could devour every story and expect it to adhere to a standard template - us fans just have to adjust to exercising our own discrimination.

If the story they want to tell requires an R-rating, then let it have an R rating.

    If not, then don't.

    Lol.

    IMG_2056.JPG

    True.

I just laugh at the idea of how some people is getting all riled up without even realizing Game of Thrones is way more than nudity and adult content. Check The Battle of the Bastards and tell me if there is abundance of nudity on it. Violence? Severed heads and limbs? Oh forgive me, I thought Jango Fett died of a terrible headache and Anakin and Luke just had a minor cut on their hands.

What if we just wait and see?

What if we can have the same majestic battle development but with lightsabers and spaceships? What about the Old Republic? The Mandalorian Wars? What if instead of Lightbringer we could see the origins of the Darksaber?

Seriously, instead of just whinging at the sole prospect of something we don't know yet let's wonder at the possibilities this might bring to a galaxy far, far away!
