We definitely watched a different movie. Hux called Ren "Supreme Leader" submissively. Furthermore he repeated every order made by Ren.
Yes, it could have been all a stradegy. But let's be honest, Hux wanted to please Ren because he was scared or uncertain of his future.

 

all i see going on there is a pissing contest with the two of them competing over who has "command" in the situation.
Hux even calls off Ren's orders and openly mocks him about firing on Luke.

which is why, again, i think coming out of the gate in ix, Hux wll have already figured out a way to usurp Ben and take control.

 

I see what you mean, and still I’m not convinced about Gleeson reverting to comedy as an insecure move on his part... I doubt that DG, experienced as he is, would have done Anything so drastic without his director’s complete blessings and, probably, specific direction. Also in interviews Gleeson has said that Hux was very clearly written for laughs rather than played for laughs in that first scene with Poe. He’s also suggested that RJ was very deliberate in his decision to start episode VIII with an ice breaking comedy beat, as his film was going to be heavy and he wanted to give the movie lighthearted moments like this.

Another thing is whether we think it worked or not. I personally did not like many of the comedy beats in TLJ, but I did enjoy this scene with Hux and Poe. It was jarring but in a good way. Poe reminded me of Han Solo and Hux of that annoying imperial officer who Death Vader almost chokes to death for criticising force powers in ANH... I don’t know his name.

It is true that in this new trilogy we feel more threat from FO technology than from FO leaders. Kylo and Hux are too emotional to truly intimidate anyone and Snoke, although evocatively scary, is not as threatening as he could have been (I blame his non human physique for this). Andrew Serkis non motion capture performance in TLJ is so much more powerful that the final version.... It comes to show you that human coldness and maniacal human facial expressions are much more effective than having a deformed creepy yet non human face doing the same. In both ST movies SKB and light speed tracker technology are the reasons why the FO succeeded, rather than the acts of a brainwashed, uniformed, lugubrious, ruthless, disciplined, megalomaniacal force like the OT empire. Also, the leaders of the FO do not have the cold mature edge Tarkin or Vader had.

What I understand after seeing TFA and TLJ is that the ST is not interested in telling the story of an OT empire, nazi-style regime and its cold blooded leaders, but rather in deepening our understanding of SW evil and what causes it. That’s why we have a storm trooper that defects, a dark side force user broken and conflicted, a megalomaniac yet insecure military officer like Hux. These baddies seem to have been designed, more than to threaten our heroes, to challenge them into finding a way to understand and eradicate evil from the galaxy.

The Force Awakens was going to film all of Jakku using Jordan. All of the concept art and plans for Nima Outpost was for that set to be constructed in Jordan, including Rey’s AT-AT homestead. In fact, the photoshopped concept art used photography from Jordan to make the concept pieces as authentic to what they would shoot there. With J.J. Abrams back as a writer and director and with Jordan potentially on the table, it could mean we go back to Jakku in Star Wars: Episode IX. ​

 

R1 was also filmed in Jordan. So it could be Jakku or Jedha. I hope it's Jakku, but some time ago there was a rumor of the FO looking for kyber crystals, so Jedha would be fitting.

 

Maybe with Snoke gone and his access to limitless resources
the FO now has to retrieve their kyber-crystals from some place else?

 

That’s an interesting thought.

Though I think that it’s probably going to be Jakku (I imagine that we’ll finally learn about what was hinted at throughout the Aftermath trilogy), it would be very interesting if we got a look at how Jedha ended up looking after their little, ahem, “mining accident”.

 

Why would we go back to Jakku?
i can only think of 2 reasons.. there is in fact a hell of a lot more to learn about Rey (as in something big), or the secret research facility is visited.

seems a bit late in the show to be doing either for me.

plus i've got credits on us not going back to Jakku of course

i'd love the story to visit Jedha, but i think the most likely destination is Tatooine.

 

i can't see Rey wanting to go back to Jakku and continue pursuing her parents ~ that would make no sense (she's learned her lesson there).
same with Reb Ben: no reason he'd want to go to Tatooine; his grandfather hated sand and isn't he letting the past die?

i feel like story-wise, the only reason to go back to Jakku is because of the contingency: then they'd have to introduce it and make Ren or Hux care about it. it's possible, i suppose.

here's my hot take silliness: the death of Snoke causes a disturbance in the Outer Rim from whence he came. now the Grysk Vong angry space whales are going to invade the galaxy. the good guys and bad guys have to work together to close the portal to stop them, hence going back to Jakku. or something. XD

 

@FN-3263827 and @Maximus, you're making some good points. I don't know why we would need to go back to Jakku, but I like the idea of ending it there. Just imagine the last shot being Rey back at her AT-AT, alone. Or at a newly built Jedi temple.

Furthermore the FO could be interested in Jakku because of the Empire. Wouldn't it also be nice to have the FO defeated there where the Empire was defeated too? #Poetry

 

i can only see Hux being interested in that.. which would lend credence to him being in charge if they end up on Jakku.

only other possibility i see is if Rey has a big fall from grace and runs back to Jakku.. and a tall chap follows her there.
or..
Ben gets pushed out of the FO and with nowhere to go and Rey not answering his skype calls - decides to find Rey's old home on Jakku.
