They're making Lando a huge part of the canon. They have a Marvel series based on him, and he's an integral part of the Han Solo film. They're doing the opposite of abandoning the character. He'll figure into the ST at some point, even if it's in a minor way.

The link doesn't say that, FYI.

It's just the old interview about the parentage being "addressed"....nothing about "depending on who is asked"....

Does anybody have another source for that quote besides NME? I can't find anything on that site...

I don't think it's intentional, but Star Wars has only ever had one black character at a time on screen so there's already Finn in the new trilogy, he was in the last one, and SLJ was in the prequels. Either they're holding out or Billy really isn't entirely interested in the demanding role he'd most likely have. Or they just don't have any reason to have him for the sake of it.

The original Link says that in the NME interview Johnson says 'depending on to whom you ask' So that's what I'm saying. That's false. Johnson never says that.

If this standard were to be applied, every scene someone was in would have to begin like this:

Good day doctor, ROTJ just turned into a 4 hour movie. ;)

https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet.com/index.php?posts/363778/ (Kennedy, Johnson, and Trevorrow claims)

The part about 'depending on who is asked' is made up/writer speculation.

Even way back in '77 there were criticisms of a lack of diversity in Star Wars, a movie that is supposed to have a galactic scaled setting.

The next time you watch ESB take notice of the faces in the crowd mulling about Bespin and you'll see Lucas' response to those criticisms.

In TFA, during the briefing before the attack on the Starkiller Base there's a substantial number of minority extras.

I hate to jump in on this 'diversity' thing, but when you think about it, there are hell of a lot of movies out there that aren't racially diverse and no one criticizes those movies for it. However, I don't watch a movie and take tabs on what races are represented and what ones aren't. Lol.

Ironically Lucas was criticized for Lando being a stereotype.

    Lucas couldn't win even then.

good question , I never thought there was a stereotype , just a new character being introduced in tesb , not different from any other
