    Johnson has explained why he ultimately decided to go down that path, sharing that he thought this would be the “hardest thing” Rey could hear—which is ultimately better for a dramatic story."

    "I went through all the possibilities of who her parents could be,” Johnson said. “I made a list, with the upsides and downsides” (a list that was probably promptly destroyed by a harried Lucasfilm intern). He landed where he did because he was fond of “breaking out from the notion that the Force is this genetic thing that you have to be tied to somebody to have. It’s the ‘anybody can be president’ idea, which I liked introducing. The foremost thing, though, was just dramatically, storytelling-wise.”

    Johnson compared his decision to the Darth Vader revelation in The Empire Strikes Back. The reason the “I am your father” line resonates so strongly, he explained, is not just because it’s a surprise—but because it’s the “hardest possible thing that Luke, and hence the audience, could hear at that moment.”

    By comparison, Rey learning that she was related to someone like Luke Skywalker would have been “the easiest thing she could possibly hear.”

    “The hardest thing to hear is, ‘Nope, this is not gonna define you,’” Johnson added. “And, in fact, Kylo is gonna use this to try and undercut your confidence so you’ll feel you have to lean on him for your identity . . . you’re gonna have to make the choice to find your own identity in this story.”

    I think that the most interesting takeaway, is not the explanation itself
    (most of us got it, regardless this interview. So, from this pov is just a validation).

    But knowing how much freedom he's got on this topic too.
    Because that means there wasn't any endgame hinted by TFA.

    RJ was free to decide to make Rey related or not. Period.
    Therefore, we have to aknowledge that TFA was meant to leave every option on the table...

    And I think there's not any endgame hinted by TLJ as well.
    TLJ and its finale are more open than many of us want to aknowledge, imo.

    I'm not saying JJ is going to change who Rey is (at least I hope not).

    But that you may use that topic in more than a way coming into IX.
