Star Wars: The Last Jedi nominated for BEST SOUND DESIGN, BEST SOUND MIXING, BEST ORIGINAL SCORE and BEST VISUALS EFFECTS

 

I generally think negativity, wherever we allow it to arise -- most destructively in ourselves -- can cumulatively exert a deleterious effect on the very thing we wish to enjoy.

It's really Anakin's story all over again:

the very thing we wish to protect is the very thing which becomes endangered by a personal drive that goes from well-intentioned to uncontrollable.​

I am ALL for everyone having their opinions, perspectives, and theories, and I think there should be tolerance of dissenting views. That is democracy at its most elementary level.

The moment we personally or collectively allow any dialogue to go from enjoyable and constructive to miserable and destructive that we stand to risk or lose the very thing we cherish and wish to protect, as was the case with Anakin and Padme.

The truth is there will never be a 100% fan-approved Star Wars film. There are simply too many variables and perspectives on the story. Add to that the daily phenomenon of experience, of new awareness, and of hearts and minds being able to change, and we have a very fluid and dynamic situation where, at some point, some part of the larger fanbase might maintain dissenting views.

And I think that's fine, the way it's supposed to be, as long as such views are maintained and shared respectfully and with the understanding others will and should have their own thoughts and feelings.

This was a lesson the Jedi themselves did not entirely master, and they perished accordingly for all their hubris, self-importance, their overconfidence in how they thought things should be run, and their inability to sense the fatally destructive lure of the Dark Side.

I do not believe our fandom can descend to that point and survive, no matter how passionately one maintains a character or situation "should" have played out.

As my experiences have shown, the way to guarantee more Star Wars media worth attending is to do what usually happens on this very forum: discuss things calmly, intelligently, in a mostly friendly and informative manner, and, most importantly, with an open mind.

Then, as I see it, everything else tends to fall into place, and our collective positive impact on the present and future of Star Wars can be more powerful amongst ourselves and perhaps even more influential to prospective storytellers.

Fan reactions do have an impact. We do have something of a positive voice in these matters. And it can register and influence things as Ezra Bridger did with his broadcast, inspiring others to join in the Rebellion.

We can be both critical and positive. We have that power. It does require some self-control, some setting aside of pride, and the respectful acknowledgement of other minds diverging from our own.

There's a lot of Star Wars yet to be written, so we still have many wonderful chances to enjoy, dissect, and discus, if not influence, Star Wars things for plenty of years to come.

That we do do this already, more often than not, makes us some of the greatest fans of any saga. I only hope more fans can be inspired to move beyond simple personal proclamations of "hate" and join more constructively and creatively in this vital dialogue.

Join us, and we can rule this galaxy as fans!

Thanks for link - hadn't seen that one. I'm hoping my opinion of the film will improve on a second viewing (will be on Blu-ray, I think); whilst some things may bother me a bit less on a second viewing (and I'm anxious that the 'humour' may bother me more), I suspect a large part of it will actually depend on Episode 9. When the saga is complete we'll probably get to see both TFA and TLJ in a different context.
