Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars (2003-2005)

Discussion in 'General TV Series Discussion' started by Duke Groundrunner, Sep 6, 2014.

?

Is Tartakovsky's "Clone Wars" series canon?

  1. Yep. It just doesn't make sense for Disney to replace it with something else.

    31.6%
  2. Nope. It was clearly stated that this series is non-canon, so it really is.

Genndy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars was a microseries that aired on Cartoon Network. I would like to know what scenes of that show are your favorite.

Mine would have to be when the clone arc trooper encounter General Grievous on their rescue mission. My my second would be the Asajj Ventress vs Anakin Skywalker duel.

I thought that the micro series wasn't too bad as it built-up the excitement for Episode III. I don't know that I have a favorite scene, although I thought the Anakin Ventress duel was pretty cool!

I guess it's no longer canon even though I don't think it has anything that disagrees with the new canon.

This series remains my favorite. The animation was great, lots of characters were awesome, and it led up to episode 3 perfectly. Any scene with Grevious is the best, though that one episode where mace windu takes down an entire robot army on dantooine single-handedly (without a lightsaber, at that) was dope.

They actually had General Grevious as a real, terrifying threat to the Jedi. Case in point:

I liked the series because it was like Star Wars and Samurai Jack had a baby. My favorite was when Kenobi was facing off against the droids, jousting and then fighting Durge.
The only arc I didn't like was when Anakin was with those blue dog-like tribal aliens, rescuing them from the Techno Union scientists. The whole "ghost hand" thing was weird.

I loved the whole thing. Watched it all consecutively just 2 weeks ago. Favorite part would be the Anakin/Ventress duel, but one of the things i liked most was how badass the clones were!

I have the two DVD's. They are expensive brand new if you try to find them. I bought them used.

    Two words: LOVE IT.
I do enjoy Season 1 a lot more tough. Anakin vs Asajj is my favorite duel, it is one of the greatest fights in SW in my opinion.
Also I like the origin of Asajj included.
Only part I didn't like is the last arc with the blue dog aliens.

I liked the space fight scenes between Asajj and Anakin in his sweet customized starship. My next favorite would have to be Obi-Wan vs. Durge. While some people may think Durge is over the top, and I do agree, the concept his armor was really just a techno-shell and his true body was so alien and terrifying was refreshing for me, and badass as a kid.

Hehe, yeah, I had hard time to apprehend Durge, but after reading Clone Wars comic books, I started to accept him in the lore and I was a little sad that he wasn't included in the ''canon'' series later.

Yah, but he does feel a bit out of place. Much of Reddit r/starwars really hates him, which is a shame

If anything, though the series is now non-canon, I don't see, like some others here, how it contradicts the existing canon. The arcs I would remove/edit are the Asajj vs. Anakin arc, and instead of throwing her down to her supposed death, which was a bit silly, how about make her give Anakin his scar, escape, and boom, I see canon. Another would be to remove the awesome Dantooine Mace Windu scene, because it was just too far over the top, more akin to Samurai Jack (Which I love) and less to Star Wars, somewhat grounded reality. And then edit Grievous' first scene and match it up with his movie voice. That always felt so cheesy and ruined the moment for me when he essentially almost kills all of the Jedi Masters who are hiding at once.

But I gotta say, I love the animation, even today. It's one of the first things that made me interested in doing animation as a living.

I got into this when it aired, loved the animation. My favorite scene is when Obi-wan and Anakin sneak past the shields and into the enemy fortress.

I mean, The Clone Wars series make much less sense without it! Tartakovsky's Clone Wars introduce Asajj Ventress, General Grievous... They show us how Anakin became a Jedi from Padawan, how the Chancellor was stolen.... If it really is non-canon, then Disney should make these MAJOR plot points in book/comic book form or I don't know what... So what do you think?

I think it is technically considered "non-canon" because of the greatly exaggerated Force powers; Mace is able to take down an entire droid army on his own in the 2003 series, but this level of power is never shown in TCW nor the prequels. I do agree with you, the plot points introduced in the show, particularly season 2, need to be retconned into the new canon. This is just one of the many areas that Disney has poorly handled this EU transition; simply declaring all previous work to be "non-canon" isn't as cut and dry as it sounds when some of that previous work inspired plot points and/or character traits in the "official" canon.

Personally, I still consider it to be canon; any discrepancies between the two shows I can excuse as "two different views of the same vast war." IT was the same way with the existing comics and novels set in the Clone Wars era when TCW series came out: they are telling separate stories in a war that spans an entire galaxy, some things are bound to cross over while other things are going to contradict. At the end of the day, they all tell the story of The Clone Wars, "official" canon be damned.
