George Lucas is a very smart man. I respect him for everything he has done, even the bad stuff like the Prequels. He is an innovator, and hasn't become arrogant with the success of the movies.

For those of you who didn't watch the video ( and you really should ), he strangely doesn't want to be remembered as the Star Wars creator once he is dead : he wants to be remembered as a good dad. He seems very honest when he says that, and that's the mark of a great man who doesn't deserve all the hate he is getting.

No Lucas => No Star Wars. Think about it.

On the contrary, it's muddy as the Mississippi.

George should have never sold Star Wars to fascist Disney.

He made a terrible mistake. One which he is very well aware of.

well he has a point. hes a very contradicting person but in terms of "new", TFA pretty much fails on all accounts. Its as retro and as safe as Disney could muster. No new planets, just new names for said planets. absolutely no new ships of any sort. The characters all share a ton of similarities with those of the OT. dont get me wrong i enjoyed the film, but Disney could not have played it any safer.

People need to stop blaming JJ Abrams for all their issues with this movie.
He's not the head of story development at Lucasfilm, neither is Kathleen Kennedy.

I think I might start a thread to talk about the plot development and people involved...

Um, Lucas cut and pasted dialogue from the OT all over the PT, Jango Fett was thrown in for the fans to call back to Boba Fett (he even appeared in the middle section of the trilogy just like Boba in ESB), the clones looked like him, and looked like stormtroopers, the clone starfighters in ROTS were X-Wings on steroids, everything on Tattooine every time we went there in every movie of the PT, etc etc ad nauseum.

Lucas totally would and DID do that.

you should. So who is in control of story development? because as far as we know, JJ and Kasdan wrote the script using ideas that came from Arndt.

I really do think he's going koo koo.

He's created something bigger and better than himself and it's probably making him crazy.

Allow me to introduce you to Kiri Hart, head of the Lucasfilm Story Group.

"Kiri Hart has worked in film for more than 20 years as a story analyst, writer, and development executive. In 2012, she helped form Lucasfilm's Story Group, and currently serves as its Development lead. Hart is a graduate of Stanford University and a California native."

Interesting piece of information, on the very first development meeting for Episode VII, production designer Rick Carter, handed a stack of Akira Kurosawa film stills to Kiri Hart and asked her to use them to tell the story of Episode VII.
They didn't do the same with anyone else, just her.

By the time Abrams and Kasdan took over scriptwriting, production was so far along that they were basically locked into the majority of characters and story beats which made it into the final film.
Abrams and Kasdan writing responsibility was more about determining the individual shots and dialogue, than it was about actually coming up with the story.

You can make a movie that is 'different', but it also needs to be good. There is a reason movies are formulaic - that is what the common filmgoer likes. I watch a lot of indie movies. Some of them are really good, but they just seem 'different' because they in some way veer from the usual formulas. And that turns off ALOT of people. With Star Wars, I like to know what I'm getting. I think Lucas just went all in on the idea that people loved Star Wars for the imagery and the technology. And its not like he lost any money on his bet....just his pride.

It would have been interesting to see how the prequels would have ended up if Kasdan had not turned down the opportunity to write them.

"They wanted to do a retro movie. I don't like that. Every movie I work very hard to make them completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships, make it new."

Yeah, that's why you went back to Tatooine in the prequels where it made no sense whatsoever and let young Darth Vader build freaking C-3PO...

I'm with you on this one.

When he sold SW to Disney I was ready to put all my resentment aside and look forward into a bright Star Wars future. Had he just stopped commenting on SW completely or maybe even admitted some mistakes here and there I would have been more than happy to see it as his very own redemption story.

But then he gave interviews. Every single public appearance from 2013 onwards made him seem more and more bitter...

However, this interview is a completely new level and makes me seriously fear for his mental health. Not only does he reach completely new levels of bitterness, without any attempt at professional niceties - He's rambling almost incoherently, contradicting his own previous sentences more often than not (not to mention the contradictions to his actual work, see quote above). Usually he at least waited for the next interview to start with the contradictions.
