George Lucas originally sold Lucasfilm after... somewhat lukewarm reception of the PT. Now, after TLJ received it's own fair share of "legitimate criticism", I think it's extremely unlikely that George would want to come back and direct another SW movie.
At this point, Episode IX is better off in the hands of a crown-pleasing craftsman like JJ, rather than a visionary artist like GL.

As a consultant, like what he did with Solo.

Forgive me, but my opinion is... let this thread stay dead.

It is a controversial topic that generates a lot of negative rep on both sides, and there isn’t much point in debating it anyway because there is no chance of it happening. GL has stated he is done with Star Wars, and I don’t think he would want to direct IX anyway since by all accounts he doesn’t seem to be a fan of VII or VIII.

I’m not criticizing the question, but nonetheless asking it again now just doesn’t accomplish anything.

I'm sensing an anti-Rian Johnson bent to this questions.

Either way, it's a bad idea.

Lucas still isn't a very good director.
He's adequate as a director. But one of the best story guys of the modern age.
If you want Lucas back, it's to be in a story capacity not behind the camera and as part of a team not working it solo.

I'd rather see Lucas return to make his story set apart from the Skywalker storyline. I don't think he would do well with the confines of the ST, at least in regards to TFA and TLJ.

He had a story mapped out before he sold Lucasfilm, and it's difficult to tell a different story than the one you envisioned. Perhaps if he had a leading role in mapping out the story and plots of the previous two films, it could have been worth it. If that's how it worked out, it certainly would have been pretty cool.

Oh no...we've had two saga movies as well as two anthology movies since this thread was started, and I just wondered if the set of movies we've had has changed anyone's mind.

when i watch behind the scenes videos for TFA, R1, TLJ.. i see the directors putting their heart and sole into the movie they're making.

i don't think George would have that same love for what he was making if he sat in the directors chair again for a Star Wars movie.

'love star wars' is the only requirement i have for anyone making these movies going forward.. and as much as i love the man for what he gave us - i don't think he does anymore. I think the negativity from the prequels affected him a great deal more than he ever let on.. but that's a big fat assumption on my part.

Isn’t George Lucas also, technically, retired from filmmaking?

i wouldn't mind him being given a bit of input into the storyline, rather than directing.
there's lots of things we might like to change about the prequels, but at least the overall storyline of the six movies hung together well. each movie seemed like a continuation of what came before. you could follow the characters lives and their motivations. i'm not sure the new movies do that as well.

didnt lucas plot out nine movies in total? i would love to read what he had in mind for the last three movies.

After all of this years, since GL sold SW to Disney, I just have to thank him for that.
During this Disney era we had a masterpiece: TLJ, an excellent movie: TFA, and two nice stand alone movies: RO and Solo.
