This may sound quite sad but can you believe I have never seen the Ghost in a Shell anime? Is it good?

I've read the manga/comics, watched the 1995 anime, and the tv series. It seems that they're really putting all their hearts into this. There is a scene in the trailer where Johansson actually mimics the way she walks from the anime. Chillingly real! ( the scene where she is in silhouette walking toward the monks sitting in a circle) The supporting character's look straight out the anime. They white washed this film but boy Johansson is doing a spectacular job. I wonder if this film is successful will James Cameron adapt the much anticipated film Battle Angel Alita another manga. For the record, the Matrix was inspired by Ghost in the Shell '95 anime.

Yeah I agree, some poses of her are just like straight on point.

I hope the finalize the CG atm it is just trailer appropriate. But some of the shots look really amazing.

    Another cool clip.

Trailer looks like they are sticking to the anime movie quite closely (apart from ScarJo being caucasian).

I've been a bit GitS fan for much of my life since I saw the Oshii film back in the late 90s. Sorry to say I missed this thread beforehand and it only popped up when I tried to make a thread about GitS.
So, I saw this thing on premiere night at my local cinema cafe. Big line.. was worried it was sold out. I hear the ticket girl say a showing was sold out and was scrambling to see what screening she was referring to.
Turns out all these people were in line to see Beuty and the Beast. So much for the "we want originality" argument.. "Tale as old as time..":p
Not saying that this GitS was original. Technically it is by virtue of them gutting the plot and stuffing a hollywood template in there but.. that actually bolsters the argument against originality.. or maybe it leads to question what really is original. Is it like obscenity: I know it when I see it?
So I knew about that heading into the theater, and I kinda expected to be pissed leaving the theater. Not catatonic like I was with X:A, but still pretty rant prone. So you can imagine my surprise that I left the theatre wanting to buy the blu-ray. I.. liked it. WTF? Now everyone on this board knows I don't have the same level of jade and scorn a lot of other people seem to have. I'm also been convinced that I have a stronger ability to suspend my disbeleif than others. But I was emmersed in the worldbuilding of this film. I doubt the writers understood what this world was about.. but the boys and girls in the trenches.. Props, makeup, costuming, cgi vfx.. they got GitS. And it shows all the way through. Those free 5 minutes are not false advertising like it was with Free State of Jones.. you get the feel/dialogue/acting/pacing of those 5 minutes through the whole movie. And while this movie should never be considered great, nor can it hold a candle to it's heritage, it.. it is not a bad film. Is it a good film? Well, I was entertained. I felt I got my 8 bucks. I didn't feel that with Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters was dull and felt like a TV movie. This movie has a brisk pace.. not fast, but brisk.. and if this was only done with 110 million dollars they stretched every buck. It looked like a 200 million dollar movie easy.
There are bad moments and plot holes. The villians are weak; their motivation to make the major is never explained. That's a big dent because they murdered 95 people prior to her and nearly a 96th trying to make a cyborg. What happened with Aramaki in the PM's office is never explained. Cyber liver was a failed joke. There is nothing done with Togusa.
But that guy with the weird name nearly steals the movie with his portrayal of Batou.
The only thing in the worldbuilding that took my out of it for a brief moment was the Ghost Dive. Now, the interpretation of a ghost dive was crap.. but the big killer for me was the technician getting all freaked about doing it and what does she do? Lights up a cigarette. A cigarette. Were in a futurist world with cyber livers and she lights up an analog roll of tobacco. Did anyone working on this ever hear of vaping? Even George knew to go with e-cigs!

Which has had me thinking over the past week.. and I read THRs report on initial reactions to this film in Japan today, especially Yuki's opinion on an "Asian Actress" playing the Major.. and I think I know what happened with this movie. Why they gutted the agency vs. agency plot, why the never considered an asian actress for the role (Margo Robbie was their first pick) and why that technician is smoking a damned cigarette instead of vaping. And I think it has a lot to do with the two production companies at the front of this film:
    Yuki said the following:
"I heard people in the U.S. wanted an Asian actress to play her. Would that be OK if she was Asian or Asian-American? Honestly, that would be worse: someone from another Asian country pretending to be Japanese. Better just to make the character white,"
I know for a fact the feeling is mutual amongst the Chinese. And that's the #2 market.
As for the smokes, well, thats easy. China National Tobacco Corporation.
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/arti...government-is-getting-rich-selling-cigarettes
What predicates 20 no smoking ads prior to the movie in market #1 is called advertising in market #2.
And finally, the original plot of GitS. You can imagine interagency anarchy involving what looks like a breif civil war does not look good in the eyes of authoritarian censors. The government officials never look bad in this version of GitS.. and only this version. I'll just leave it at that.

But all in all it was a good/avg movie. Visually stunning, plot's a bore. Good to fair acting.
Recommendation: Jack Sparrow, because your money isn't going to save it.

Okay, so TL:DR is GitS has been a moderate sucess everywhere else on the planet. So I've been thinking for the past few weeks killed GitS in North America?
Paramount officially says it was whitewashing and word of mouth.
Well, it wasn't necessarily word of mouth because nobody saw this movie; and the few that did give it mix/positive with a few negatives of course. So by word of mouth do they mean the critcs? The same people who gave an even worse score to Suicide Squad? Who cerified fresh that tv movie called Ghostbusters last year? Who gave Star Trek Beyond an 80+ tomatometer and the film still tanked?

Some have claimed the fans didn't show up. I know for a fact they did.
    Let's look at the data
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219827/ratings
So 2 weeks into this movie, we got 11k a piece in 18-29 & 30-44. There are 2k responding in the 45+ and only 220 teenagers responding to a pg13 movie. That should tell you 18-29 is top heavy, and 30-44 is bottom/mid heavy. If you backtrack that to the late 90s early 00s the heavier ends of those age groups are moving through their teenage years: prime Otaku age. Those dates correspond with Oshi's movie and Stand Alone Complex. The younger and much lighter end corresponds to the 'crunchyroll' crowd: those Otaku who have never had to pay to watch anime. Btw here is GitS presence on Crunchyroll: nothing. Gotta go to youtube for it. Gotta pirate or pay HULU if you want the full movie. Something for you guys who think "if this movie just stuck to the original story everyone would love it" to consider.
The base came out. Thing is, no one else did.
Jeremy Johns has suggested the trailers may be to blame.
The first trailer has 25m views on fandango. The second trailer, fandango, has 1.5m views. Running statistics and ratio, If the buzz was the same then trailer 2 should have at least ~5m views. It's got a third of that. Between November and February the hype for this movie dropped like General Vogel.
Trailer 1 doesn't drop the plot change, but any basic research done at that point by the curious would reveal that the film rights were bought under the auspices that Steven Speilberg would direct it.. Ten years ago! It has been in preproduction hell since then, and has had at least 5 writers.. none of which have written a sci-fi or comic book movie. Speilberg has been replaced by a man who has never directed anything not meant to pimp a product.
I personally think the trailers over targeted the fan base to the utter exclusion of anyone else.
I also think you can't exclude past failures like the DbZ and Speed Racer affecting perception. On top of that Paramount has a string of bombs since last summer
