Cancel culture doesn't exist. It's a boogyman created to absolve oneself of being responsible for their choices.
No one has been "cancelled." Gina is still working. She just did a big presentation with Ben Shapiro to millions of viewers.

I deleted the rest of my post. There's just no way this is going to end well.

Wait til the mob comes after Rosario Dawson. I see rumblings out there.

    Confusing, infantile, sad.

Maybe start a new thread for Rosario then.

Or try to be optimistic and look forward to Ahsoka instead.

I miss the days of robust dialog, when/ where you were free to speak your mind & debate with your forum homies/ladyfrenz and no matter how heated, were cool with them the next day. I've found the best discussions were never in echo-chambers. The cult of being-PC just ain't for me.... I get that times change, but I find politically correct living to be nauseating as well as soul crippling.... and I'm not willing to live one day like that. If forum peeps don't like my points of view or; any user(s) for that matter, they are free to block/ ignore the person and proceed with their worldview being unencumbered by "offensive/ alternative" opinion(s).

It's not hard at all for any user to maintain their own Cantina, status quo.

This place always been a bar to me, just like the name says.

For me, it's like flying thru Beggars Canyon. Fun times.

    THIS x 1,000!!

    I'd call it a boogy_karen, but I digress.

Wait. When did Disney rehire Gina?

If they haven't: [insert Sidious gif again].

We watched it after she got fired by Disney for Mean Tweeting and AFAIK, Gina's still cancelled by Mousehouse.

It's ok to not see eye to eye. It doesn't change my opinion of you.... you've always been articulate about your point of view and I haven't always agreed.... as I'm sure you know from your notifications, I have [LIKED] some them for being different, then I moved on without commenting. More often than not, I enjoy reading diverse opinions. My biggest issue with all of this is Disney's double standard. To me, they knee jerked when they fired Gunn. Hiring him back proved to me that his opinion/gross sense of humor doesn't matter as much to the company as his skills & talent.

They were always free to fire Gina for not toeing the line.... she obviously didn't care.

They could hire her back just the same if they wanted to.

Disney chose this hill when Gunn was brought back.

Simply put being fired isn't being cancelled. She's free to work. She has multiple platforms to work and communicate on. This is a regular part of life. Not being cancelled.

    Calling it cancelled is overdramatic.

No, Disney made it clear: give a sincere apology and you can come back. Refuse and you stay gone.
The more apt comparison is Chuck Wendig.
    Gunn apologized (twice even).
    Carano keeps doubling down.

If this were strictly about politics why does Chris Pratt keep getting jobs with the House of Mouse?

Hard to read tone on here sometimes, but I wasn't being pessimistic. I am looking forward to the Ahsoka series. Loved Rosario's portrayal of Ahsoka. I don't want anyone to get fired.

Not sure. I don't pay attention to Pratt.... so I can only draw one conclusion, because he hasn't offended Disney and or, one of their fans enough.

I have zero da*ns to give here.

Disney has a long history of very nuanced conduct clauses in their contracts which actors are agreeing to when they sign.

If you don't want to follow them; do a different job.

Any high level business involved in public reputation as part of their trade has similar clauses.

Heck, all I do is work in telecommunications and I signed an At-Will contract. Technically speaking, my company could just fire me because they don't like my fashion sense.

One of three things are happening here:
    1) An actor has the worst lawyers who didn't tell them their conduct clauses, and the actor didn't read the terms of their employment.
    2) The actor full well knew the terms and went in counting on breaking them in defiance.
    3) The actor slipped for whatever reason, or found they weren't able to abide like they thought they could, ended up fired, and are venting through media platforms about it in their own narrative.

Regardless of which one, it's the same story: actor fired for violating the terms of their contract.

I don't have any sympathy just because the contract includes behavioral and social media clauses.

Yeah it's draconian, and I don't have a problem with it.

I personally wish it would go back to pre-free agent days of salaries and studios being the direct and perpetual employer rather than a sport's team system that only benefits the top tier of workers and leaves the vast majority of the industry struggling to scrape by with zero consistent income security.

    Cheers,
    Jayson

Here's the only thing I have to say about it. Companies used to invoke disclaimers when an employee said something they disagreed with. Something along the lines of: "The views expressed by ____ do not reflect the views held by _____." Granted, this was before the fast-paced world of social media where everything happens at once and no one listens to anybody else. There used to be a time when people were allowed to disagree with each other.

Every so often, though, you find a place like the Cantina here where people with different opinions can have thoughtful discussions in order to help each other to understand their prespectives. That the reason for threads like this. Right?

You just have to remember: An opinion (pardon the expression) is like what you leave behind in the toilet. You may feel quite accomplished about what you've produced, but there is no guarantee that anyone else will want to know about it!

Sorry about the "potty humor", you might say I've been "sitting" on that one for a while and I've been waiting for an excuse to use it. ;)

Suggesting that "the mob" is going to go after actors in Star Wars doesn't sound like optimism or looking forward to it.

Gina got what she deserved, then.

I'm guessing that means Disney didn't vet Gunn's twitter account BEFORE they hired him.... so, they still look dumb.

This deal keeps getting worse all the time.

And all it does it make me laugh.

    :)

I would argue that it is, regardless of whether or not it should be. Which why we haven't been allowing a lot of discussion on it.
The Cantina is meant for discussing Star Wars and related things, and it's an awful pain in the arse to separate it from the problems of reality (like covid and actors getting fired).
    It's a bar, it's a friends place... it's a courtroom... it's the internet!
Look, each place is going to have its own house rules and what not. I agree that the best conversations are ones outside of an echo chamber (is it even a conversation if takes place in one?!?). With the house rules comes guidelines and policies.
The problem is that some people do get offended for silly reasons, or get up in arms for a minor phrase or what have you. The goal of any good conversation or debate is not to directly offend, but to get your perspective across. If a person can't convey their perspective without insults or condescension, then there's no way that's going to float, especially at a mate's house or a bar full of people who don't agree.
Will people be offended by an opposing perspective? More than likely, but as long as it presented properly and orderly, then the other option for people are to respond in a like manner or go away.
If you or someone else wants to get into the reeds of the virus or Carano's firing, then by all means, take it to a private convo and put the boxing gloves (or go for bareknuckle fighting, I don't care). It's in knowing the setting and what's expected.

And as you said, if someone just doesn't like your perspective, they have every right to ignore you. And vice versa. But again, there's a difference between house rules and PC culture.
(check my history, I doubt I'm very PC.)

I don't WANT it to happen. Was just stating that I've seen trending topics on social media referring to it. It was an observation, not an opinion.

Yeah, well...if anyone is at fault here, to be honest - in my view if I were VP, it would be the casting director.
It's kind of like that moment when a corporation hires someone and then they have to fire them shortly after because they violate the corporate code of conduct and it becomes readily apparent to everyone that the person was never a good fit for the corporation's corporate culture.

The first place I would be chewing out in that situation is the HR department for failing to screen the employee properly in the first place.

So, in this case, if I were in the boardroom of Disney, I'd be demanding an explanation from Sarah Finn as to why she felt that this actor was a good fit with the Disney brand.

    Cheers,
    Jayson
