Apparently female characters dont count unless they are gay these days... I am going to be 100% honest about it.

I would rather have homosexual male characters... Homosexual female characters are being massively overplayed right now in popular media.

Women are being written with two personalities "bitter enemies" and "lesbian lovers totally in love"

And big studios and other creators are using lesbians to say "see we have people with diverse sexualities" when in fact all they are doing is showing exactly 1 variation aside from the norm (dont give me that "homosexuality is normal" semantics argument, you know damn well what I mean and that I am on your side). And they get away with it because cis-white men find women making out to be "supah hawt bruh"

Homosexual women dont challenge our societal norms as much as homosexual men do. They are basically being treated as discount versions of every other sexuality.

And on top of that... it reinforces gender stereotypes in a way, it is saying that "if you perform a behavior outside the gender norm, then you must perform all the behaviours therein that is associated"

so if you see woman as a hero, and cannot comprehend her making out with anyone but a woman... then you have significant issues when it comes to gender stereotypes and prejudice because your feeble brain cannot comprehend a human punching another human without that human being interested in vagina.

There is also a subtle homophobia at play with most male writers who write lesbian characters, they are so afraid of penis that they seek to eliminate any and all penis... it is messed up. It is like, they are scared if they write a man that it will make them gay.

now to be fair, if I had to pick a female character in Star Wars to be a lesbian... sure... why not Jyn Erso?

There are a few criteria for writing homosexuals that I adhere too as a writer, and I think taht they are just a good guideline. And she seems to fit them nicely.

    1. No immortal or spiritual beings... lets face facts, no matter how you personally believe homosexuality comes about... a being with an inifinite lifespan is going to be far more fluid when it comes to sex and romance (probably will not have romantic interest at all)

    2. Dont pretend mono-gendered aliens are somehow gay... this one speaks for itself, its a tired trope that does a disservice too the LGBT community.

    3. nobody who is mentally ill or evil without nuance, doing so runs the serious risk of people mistaking the characters homosexuality for an expression of insanity (example of this would be the mirror universe episodes of deep space 9 where there was an insane character that was gay)

    4. Never a fully masculine or fully feminine character in terms of personality... either of these you will run into stereotypes

And Jyn Erso fits the bill... there is another guideline that I have specific for lesbians, and that is a bit more complicated... in a group of female characters, I typically will not make any of the female characters lesbians. Because it runs the risk of writing "lesbian" and "woman" as personality sub-types....

Seeing as Jyn Erso is the only female in the group though... that actually negates this as a potential problem, and as a character that seems to have clear goals, this means her nature as a homosexual character would not overwelm.

But there also doesn't seem to be any place in the story for her to express this... so it would have to awkwardly be stated at some point, and that could be seriously uncomfortable.

    TL/DR

This is a complicated and nuanced issue, with a lot of factors to consider.

    Man, I'm just kidding.

No one should take seriously make Jyn Erso lesbian just because a fan wants to.

Obviously, Rey doesn't belong to that time.

But who doesn't want to see Daisy Ridley and Felicity Jones sharing a lesbian scene?

See this is some of the sh***t I am talking about right here... womens sexualities arent your play thing. (which is my big problem with the neo/faux-liberal movement these days, every sexuality is viewed as a toy... something to play with and joke about)

And making women gay on screen just because its "supah hawt bruh" is pathetic and childish... this isnt middle school, this is the real world... and the people you are talking about really exist.

And they don't exist for your joy.

This has to be one of the most Cro-Magnon conversations about Star Wars I've ever seen.

There are tons of these type of movements like GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend and GiveElsaAGirlfriend. It's just weird fans who want their Tumblr fantasies to be real. Jyn being a lesbian would be in comics or novels only because I doubt there would be a love scene in a war movie, especially a gay love scene.

I'm sorry if someone was offended because of my comment, but I obviously didn't pretend to offend anyone.

@Willybobo said we should debate about a possible girlfriend with humor. This is not a serious post (how can, for example, rey be her girlfriend if she wasn't born yet?).

Is not about politics, it's just a fun post like saying "Who is rey's father? Jar Jar"

Again, if someone was offended, I'm sorry and I didn't pretend to offend anyone.

Yeah, because nothing bad ever came from joking about a whole group of people like their defining aspect that they have no control over and has no effect is one big joke.

    HAHAHHAHAHHHAHAHAHAH > : [

SO FUNNY THEY DIFFERENT AND IT HAS NO EFFECT BUT DIFFERENT HAHAHAHAHAHA > :[

Generally this is one of the big problems with LGBT characters... to validate their status as that, it almost allways requires a major plot-diversion that interrupts teh flow.

the writers always lose either way.

    1. dont show it, and the people complain "you are too much of a coward to show how much of a lesbian she is

    2. oh just because she is a lesbian she has to have a romance and you ahve to make it super cliche and stereotypical.

If you have spent any time exploring the neo-liberal landscape... you would know that all of their demands are like loaded questions, there is a bullet in each chamber ready to cause controversy no matter what people do...

Thanks for participating in this lively thread, y'all. Let's try to keep it friendly though. To each his/her own... even if that means defying the laws of time/space/humor. The last thing we want is for this thread to be locked for squabbling over each other's fantasies. My fantasy is for this thread to continue until the day Jyn Erso gets a proper girlfriend. Help me make it a reality. So get along, or move along. Thanks!

    You're right about the movements.

I don't think Jyn being a lesbian will happen, but IF happens, I wouldn't mind.

It's like the whole "Poe/Finn" thing, I don't mind, if it happens, I would probably like it.

A gay scene in a war movie, if done correctly, could be cool (I'm thinking about a kiss for example)

How being gay or lesbian is being different? Being gay or lesbian is a normal thing.

    I don't understand seriously.

I was just joking about a NORMAL thing like when I joked about Maz and Chewie being Rey's parents.

I don't want to offend anyone here, this thread was supossed to be a humor thread because there's NO WAY that Rey could be Jyn's girlfriend when she wasn't born YET.

But again, I'm sorry if anyone was offended, I don't want to upset anyone.

Now you can laugh at me all you want.
    --- Double Post Merged, Aug 31, 2016 ---
    Exactly.

If for example, Poe and Finn do that in Episode VIII, it would be awesome (and a cool tribute too).

    Lol seriously?

Well first off... Different is relative, to a straight person... a homosexual person is always different. (you knew damn well that this is what I meant)

Second... on the level you are talking about. It is being different from the standard human sexuality, it is a variation on the norm... the only reason people pushed the idea that it is "normal" is that there is this pervasive and disgusting idea in society that "normal = good"

It is a totally harmless quirk and variation on humanity, it is different than the typical... get the f**k over it, being different and not-normal does not equate to being bad.

(another reason I dont like neo-liberalism, denying obvious truths and using weasel words to try and make it sound like people said something they didnt.)
