EVENT Godzilla Fan Thread (News on Upcoming Movies and Previous Movies)

I liked the 2014 Godzilla. I liked that Edwards tried to go the Jaws route with it. Worth the risk. It's also brilliantly shot where every early shot of the monsters is from a human POV. No towering shots from the clouds...

 

It's also a bit ironic, that Godzilla (2014) was the first one where Godzilla was a bit off focus in a way and different than the typical Godzilla films and here we are on a Star Wars forum where different suxxx! (PT) and too similar is garbage!!! (ST).

It's almost like you can't please everyone

 

I loved the new Godzilla movie and after watching Kong Skull Island I have to say that I'm even more pummped with that surprise after credits ending!

 

I can't wait till Kong and Godzilla clash!

 

Agreed that's a clash I want to see, I enjoyed the latest installment of it.

 

That would be such a WB thing to duplicate it.
If the movie is Kong vs Godzilla, just leave it as Kong vs Godzilla.
Part of the issues with BvS were that it was VERSUS but they fought for 10(ish) minutes and then teamed up as super best friends.

Kong vs Godzilla needs to be the movie. Constant struggles and battles. That has to be the highlight. Like BvS if you have Ghidorah show up at the end and they fight him, that's what you remember. Which is bad if the film is called Kong vs Godzilla.

Neither has to "win"
If Ghidorah shows up, it should be at the end and the next film should be the team up.

 

Big Godzilla fan here as well. Been watching the big green guy since I was just a little kid. Actually just finished watching one that I had never gotten to see, Godzilla vs Biollante. With that one scratched off the list I can finally say that I've seen all the Heisei series Godzilla films. It was a weird film where Godzilla fought a giant mutated rose bush that had half of his DNA plus the spirit of a scientist's dead daughter, weird stuff, but enjoyable in its own convoluted way. Probably the most violent Godzilla fight of that series, and probably the best looking Godzilla suit as well.

I also love the new 2014 Godzilla film as well as Skull Island. Neither were perfect, but both accomplished what they set out to do and were very enjoyable to watch, I can't wait for the next one in the series.

I have more Godzilla thoughts, but it's getting late and I need to hit the sack. I'll rejoin this conversation later .

 

Final Wars was interesting... I liked parts of it and hated others. Seeing all the monsters is always a treat. Additionally, I loved both of the new Gigan suits as well as getting to see updates of other Godzilla monsters that we hadn't seen in decades. Seeing Godzilla go crazy on all the other monsters was a real treat as well. I think the best part might have been his incredibly short battle with Zilla(the 1998 Hollywood Godzilla). I love how Toho actually bought the rights to that version of Godzilla just so they could include him in the movie and show us how they really feel about him, hilarious stuff. Full disclosure, I actually enjoy the 98 Godzilla as fun monster movie, but yeah, it isn't really a Godzilla film.

As for the stuff I didn't like, the human bits were seriously awful at points. Occasionally those scenes would cross into so bad it's good territory, but for the most part they were just bad. It was like I wasn't even watching a Godzilla movie in several of the longer action scenes. I get that some people like that over the top Power Rangers meets the Matrix meets Star Wars action stuff, but I seriously find it to be awful, especially when it's stretched out over agonisingly long sequences.

I get that other Godzilla movies have played with stranger elements in their human sequences(like the ESP and time travel stuff in the Heisei series, not to mention all the strange stuff over the course of the Showa series), but that stuff should never distract from the monster fights once they get going, let alone try and compete with them for spectacle. If we never see the Earth Defense Force again, that'll be just fine with me.

As for so bad it's good stuff though, the New York scene was hilarious. If that's how some people in Japan view New York, that is really funny.

All in all, I would say the movies a pretty mixed bag, it does certain things really well for a Godzilla movie and it does other things terribly. I would still recommend it to Godzilla fans, but with the caveat that they should have the fast forward button nearby for the times when the human stuff gets unbearably bad. I still watch the good parts occasionally, but I doubt that I'll ever willingly sit through the whole thing again.
