Television is not my main area of study, especially network television which brings it's own restrictions and problems. You can't in most cases tell if a show is going to pan out just by the pilot episode. I feel like it takes about five or six episode before you know what you ultimately have. As far as the the D.C Comics and the Batman/Gotham mythos, i have more knowledge than the average person with my familiarity with the Batman Animated Series (1992-1995), live action & animated movies, Batman Arkham games and other information you pick up on the internet. I'm also a fan of police & crime investigation tv series such as The Wire (2002-2008), The Shield (2002-2008) True Detective (2014-) Southland (2009-2013)
and others. As a crime show , i don't think at this time the show can hold its own with other shows like listed, but i don't think thats what they're trying or going to try for this show. But with that out of the way, i'm going to get to some of the problems i had with the episode. There's a weird scene where a character who is a member of the mob and also an informant just got into a detective's car in broad daylight in front of people which i think is bad writting. The Cgi looking blood splatter effects in the Wayne's murder and other scenes. The slaughterhouse scene made me laugh because the butcher looked like a Running Man villain. Selina Kyle "Catwoman" had nothing to do other than petty theft and lurking around trying to be mysterious?/cool?/pretty? I don't know? Didn't really need to name drop Poison Ivy, she didn't seem like shes even going to be relevant at this time so i don't know why they thought she needed to be in it. A detective believes that the main protagonists and his partner are murderous corrupt cops, so you go up to one of them and tell them that you think that ? Not i don't know, maybe.... tell the Director of Operations or maybe.... Internal Affairs ? The acting is inconstant and the dialogue could of, should of, been better. The pacing & editing was off but thats not a surprise for a show like this. Ultimately, i wasn't impressed for right now. It feels like its just going to be novelty show where you can see these Batman characters interact with each other untill the writting improves. It had a little bit of a soap opera feel to it. If i was asked if i would watch this episode again, i'd say no. If this was a cable show i'd give it a weak 6/10 but since its network television, i'll give it a weak 7/10 with lots of room to improve. If you're up for it, leave some comments about how you feel about this show.
