Guess who's action figure is a peg warmer...

...Pretty much everyone but TLJ Luke. Not seen in the image (they are behind the stacks of figures) were Hux, Kylo and Chewie. There was not an Old Man Luke to be found. Or a plushie Porg for that matter.

Frankly, none of these figures want me to run out and buy any. For the most part, a boring assortment.

Do they only stick to the main characters these days? So much of the fun when I was growing up was getting an IG-88 or a Snaggletooth. Characters that were barely in the movie. Even if they didn't want to mass market it to kids, I would have to think there would be some sort of market out there for that.

At least they could've spiced things up by including a random droid or a background alien, however minor they may be. I stopped buying SW figures on a regular basis 10 years ago. The figures they've released with regards to the Disney movies has been rather paltry, imo.

    Background characters don't sell well.

They might not sell well at a Walmart or Target. I get it...kids today are just not into it the way a lot of us were. But why not outsource some figure development to another company that could handle the background characters. For instance, sometimes at Barnes and Nobles, I will see action figures for 'The Goonies' and even 'Friday the 13th'. I'm pretty sure the market for those would be even much lower than 'Last Jedi background characters'. I mean come on, how cool is this?

It's sad to see the toy game down so bad now.

I remember back when Attack of the Clones was released. I went to my local Wal-Mart only to find a display only slightly bigger than the one that @TheBBP posted at the beginning of this thread. I was pretty upset at the lack of variety, until a store employee saw me browsing and told me that I was only in the overflow section, and he'd take me to the Star Wars aisle. So he leads me down a few aisles, and lo and behold, the entire side of the aisle is Star Wars merch. Kids and adults alike were browsing like it was a fish market in Seattle (that's a phrase, right?).

Sure, there were Obi Wans and Jango Fetts all around, but there were also Dexters and every type of Clone Trooper you could imagine.

Literal dream come true for any fan. I'm sure you all remember the feeling.

These days, I can hardly even go over to the Star Wars section anymore, it's so paltry. As much as I personally like what Disney's been doing to the series as a whole, I think they're dropping the ball hard when it comes to merch.

    edit:

    Seriously, remember these days?

The only "merch" (i.e. toys ;) ) that I'm into are the Lego sets and even then, the selection has gotten a little bland since 2015. (In my opinion.) I was kinda interested in possibly getting into the action figures for a time, but the cheaper ones, like the ones above, just look bad to me. (Again, just my opinion.) That assortment's kinda bland too. Though, keep in mind, kids might not be into these TLJ products yet, because the movie doesn't come out for a another two months. They probably don't have ideas for play and don't want to play with a new character if they haven't seen the movie yet.

It's a Twilight Zone episode we live in.
As the technology and access to materials makes having bigger better toys more easily available, the same things make those toys obsolete to the children of today. They want gadgets and whizzbangers and doodads and flippityfloogers....not good ol fashioned action figures.
