Sorry if this has been brought up before, but I didn't see it so...

In TFA we learn about this old friend of Han's, her name is Maz Kanata. Supposedly Han has known her for a while and she's good friends with Chewie as well.

I'm fine with us not seeing her before. I understand that they can't go back to ANH and retroactively add her to the fi-... no, wait. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT LUCASFILM!

    Ahem. Sorry.

I would like an exploration of some of Maz and Han's interactions and their previous relationship though. That's... not going to happen in any of the films set after TFA, so I think that having her in this Han Solo film would be a great place to do some of that.

What do people think? Should/Will we see Maz in this film?

I think she should be in this movie, it would be interesting to see how far they go back.

Maz Kanata's life span, her multiple connections with potential key characters in the galaxy, and her Force sensitivity make her a very compelling character.

Due to the compressed and rapid character development and plot pacing that's likely to occur in Episodes VIII and IX, there's a very good chance we might not get to hear or see much more of her.

In which case, it could be nice to have some further exposition and interaction with Maz elsewhere, such as this film, especially since she knows Han Solo so well.

Perhaps the writers could also have her make a comment or two which might have future implications for the Sequel Trilogy, something that might even later explain why Han looks sort of funny at Rey a few times when he first meets her.

INT. MAZ KANATA'S CASTLE - DAY

Han approaches the bar, sits down, flustered. Maz Kanata comes around, pours him a drink.

Han: That's it. I'm done giving it all away. Next time I'm charging double. Because I can.

    Han sips his drink.

Maz: You know better than to say that.

Han (laughs): I'm just a smuggler.

Maz: No, you're capable of more. So much more. You only have to believe it.

Han: They took everything from me, Maz. Everything. You know how hard I worked for that last deal.

Maz: And there will come a day when someone has something you fought to protect and cherished all your life. Do not send her away. Take her in. Help her. She will need your help. More than you know.

Han (mystified): What? What are you talking about?

Maz: Ask me some day when you're older. Now where's my boyfriend? Chewie?

I'm going to say no. I love Maz Kanata, and Luita Nyong'o, but Standalone films shouldn't connected directly to the Episodic films. It seems good until people get distracted by the self-contained story. Of course, we'll see Han, Chewie, the Millenium Falcon. etc., but if she's influencing both the Anthology and the Episodic films, I wouldn't be upset by it, but I'd say it's just for more merchandise for a slightly different looking Maz. But a line regarding Maz? Yes please, that's the fan-service I enjoy!

Max is a JJ creation that exists between ROTJ & TFA that would be force-fed if put in anything before TFA.

I think it would be really cool to see more of Maz and Han's relationship in the past but this should be done very carefully so that it doesn't ruin continuity. When we meet Han Solo in ANH, he was just a pirate type character who just thought of himself and who didn't believe in the Force. If we were to see Maz in Han's past, it would be good if we saw her in her pirate days and Disney should keep her Force abilities a secret from Han. Having Maz be this incredibly wise, Force sensitive character who's premonitions to Han and Chewie always came true and who was always talking about the Force would make Han seem like a dork in ANH when he tells Luke that he's never seen anything to make him believe in the Force. Things like this tend to be a major problem when you try to retcon a new character with another that has been around for many many years. If done right, it could be very cool and Maz can be a very interesting character in Han and Chewie's past but sadly the times this has been done before it has usually ended up ruining characters for fans instead of making them better. We can be seeing a repetition of what happened when they retconned Jango Fett into Boba Fett's story.

Wait, Jango was retconned? I thought Boba was, not Jango. Boba was from a planet of super-commandos in the early creation process, right? Correct me if I'm wrong here. It would be interesting to know what Jango was beforehand then :D

You're both right. Jango was retconned, or forced, into Boba's story. So Jango was given a story, but Boba's was retconned.

The reason Maz Kanata should not be in the Han Solo movie is because she uses the Force. I am afraid this may spoil the continuity of Star Wars and Han's character if Maz does anything remotely force-ish to her character (studying a person's eyes, for example, which is so much a part of her character.) In Episode IV, Han Solo had absolutely no reason to believe in the Force, as apparently by his smug remarks during the Luke training scene on the Falcon.

Then again, they can possibly show Maz without her talking about the Force or using it. But I would not find her character as interesting if this was the case.

I hope they have a great debut scene but maybe they'll hold that for the ST.

It would be a good addition to the movie. The thing that gets me is how did he know a Force sensitive such as Maz, since he did not care much about the Force until after ROTJ. They do seem to go way back. Maybe it was her shady side that attracted him to her.

At first I can say that having Maz Kanata in the Han Solo spin-off would be good in terms of her character development that we do not know that much, other than the snippets found on the "Aftermath: Life Debt" interlude and TFA. It is wise to mention that including her into this stage of Han Solo's life would be sort of strange - especially when in ANH he declares he is just a smuggler that has flown from one side of the galaxy to the other, that has seen a lot of strange stuff, but never seen *anything* to make him believe that there's one all-powerful Force controlling everything.

BUT we need to take something into account: the Empire. So far we have learned from several sources - "A New Dawn", "Lords of the Sith", "Ahsoka" books - what was the perspective of the Galactic Empire regarding Force-sensitive people. Maybe Maz was old enough and her Force-sensitiveness was something not 100% disclosed to the rest of the galaxy, to help her survive. We don't know yet how much of her FS was known by her peers. Especially with Inquisitors roaming around the galaxy looking for anyone using the Force. So in some way I could understand how she could have hidden her Force-sensitiveness from the scoundrels and pirates frequenting her Castle.

Would rather she wasn't. There is plenty of time between Return of the Jedi and The Force awakens for them to build a friendship.

The way that the novelization is worded implies he knew her before ROTJ.

I'm undecided about Max being in the Solo movie. I agree that if she is in it then she should not show any Force abilities. It might be cool seeing her running the bar in her castle. I'll would be fine with or without her.

The thing to remember that this movie and TFA was written by Kasdan so it would not be out of the possibility that she makes an appearance

I would be okay with Maz showing up in the Han Solo film, but a) she shouldn't look younger (seriously, Yoda should have looked the same in the PT as ESB, considering what a small fraction of his lifespan that covered), and b) it has to be handled very carefully so as to not seem shoehorned in.

If all she does is play with her glasses and pop her mouth about the force then it really makes it easy for him to discount it as parlor tricks. Him disbelieving her mumbo jumbo is a great way to add her.

She would be a great element but she works in TFA because Han should "know a guy" in dive bars everywhere. If she is there it could work if not that works too because the galaxy is huge.

Meeting someone on Malestare while Lando bets on pod races in which Maz is a racer might be a good touch.

Maz isn't exactly a powerful force wielder. She's probably pounding drinks next to Chewie at the bar hoping for some wookie lovin' while Han brokers a deal and comes over to tell Chewie and meets her.
