Well they almost kinda have to now by establishing they have known each other for a long time. But it's not necessary.

I don't think it'd have to be "connected directly". We don't need to see Maz getting Luke's saber, or even Maz in her base. Rather, it would just be nice to get a little insight into their relationship more, as in TFA we barely see them interact (in favor of Rey getting more time with Maz). Someone as relatively spiritual as Maz seems like an odd friend for the skeptical Han to have, so I think that warrants some attention.

Also, a little bit of connections between films isn't a bad thing, as long as the self contained story isn't ever put on hold. Consider another Disney property- Marvel. In one of their films, Guardians of the Galaxy, there's a section in the middle where we get some pretty heavy exposition for the entire Marvel universe as a whole, and where it's going. But, that exposition also applies heavily to the film itself, so it doesn't feel at all out of place. On the other hand, in Age of Ultron, Thor heads off to basically preview events in the Marvel universe that still haven't happened yet. It was jarring, confusing, and most importantly had almost nothing to do with the film it was in. That's why it was a mistake.

So, if done right, I think connections like between films could be a great way to really establish a stronger Star Wars universe. But I totally do understand your concern.
