This is just speculation, but here is my take on what we know so far about Ep. 7 and Ep.8.

*Han is the central OT figure in Ep 7 (as seen in the previews and speculation/rumors)
*Luke is absent (although we know is "present" and involved somehow)
*Little is known about Leia's role

Here is my take. Each episode will be *generally* about the new cast, but also (prominently) feature one of the OT. My theory is that Ep. 7 will focus on Han, Ep. 8 will focus on Luke, and Ep, 9 will focus on Leia)

*In episode 7, Han takes center stage. He takes on the unexpected mentor role and survives and goes off into space bar hopping with Chewbacca. Okay, that last bit may have been a tad over-hopeful...

*Clearly, with the absence of Luke in ep 8, we are being set up with him as our Jedi mentor in Ep. 8. He will be a Jedi mentor to a new padawan (Finn and/or Rey). There are already reports of Ep 8 footage involving Mark Hamill.

*In Episode 9, my guess is that Leia finally takes center stage. She has always been on "the backburner" when it comes to the Skywalker family. I mean, we know who Dad's favorite was. We know Leia is "strong with the force", but we always consider her a politician or princess before Jedi. I believe that in episode 9, we say Leia's true Jedi nature will emerge, and I can guarantee it will have something to do with Rey's journey. This is the episode we see Leia wield a lightsaber.

My gut tells me the Big 3 make it through the whole Trilogy and are with new generation at the celebration at the end of Episode 9.

Although the ST is about the new generation, Han, Luke, Leia guiding these characters gives a familiarity for the audience.

It's an interesting idea, but I think Luke and Leia are going to be on parallel arcs through 8 & 9. Luke will be doing Jedi business and training some new Jedi.

All indications are that Leia did not pursue the way of the Jedi. We won't see her throw out a lightsaber. She is the general. Her Force power appears to be more in the area of perception. If Kylo Ren is her son, however, then there is clearly a very important arc for her character that I am sure will be addressed.

I believe General Madine will be the main event of ep VIII.

I like your thought process here. Maybe to expand on it alittle bit...Luke would be the main focus of episode 8 as you said, however at some point in Act 3 he is killed. At this point you have a couple(?) of young jedis in training with their leader killed and things looking at their darkest. Now I know they could have Luke come back as a force ghost (and probably will), but maybe this is when Leia gets her chance to wrap her story arch and maybe use some Jedi powers in the process. Its my guess she never went into training, or even used any powers, but Luke's death 'awakens' something in her. She takes the jedis under her wing and completes whatever mission needs to happen (killing Snoke?). And everyone lives happily ever after---the end.

Unless Han dies, he will be alive through or die of old age like Yoda, but his death will always be ambiguous for us .
