I'll try to state my position on this as simply as I can--which is tricky, because it's one I feel very strongly about. It has taken me a bit of time to get past reaction to Han’s death and closer to analysis.

I believe the most important aspect of Han's death is his last act of love and forgiveness toward Kylo, when he tenderly touches his son's face even after the brutal and murderous stab has already occurred. In itself, Han’s act is meaningful because it brings Han's character arc to completion, from the guy who announced his refusal to rescue a doomed princess because "better her than me"… to someone who thought the mere extremely slim possibilityof saving his son was worth risking his life for.

I too choose to honor Han’s last act of forgiveness in how I see Kylo Ren.

But I don’t believe that Han’s last act is completed yet, and the more important meaning is to come. I believe it will ultimately play a key role in bringing Kylo to redemption, because it will continue to haunt him. Han will have saved his son…it’s just going to take awhile.

I try to look at the big picture: To me, having Kylo be an unforgiveable Dark Side monster would actually be a waste of the original trilogy. Why have Luke save his father, if Anakin’s own grandson is just going to fall into irredeemable evil? Why give our Big Three characters a happy ending in RotJ, if everything is going to end so horribly for them in this trilogy, with Han and Leia’s only son an anathema, and Luke a failure who is completely unable to help him? Is it OK, too, for Leia to lose both her husband and her son forever? Is that really the legacy this trilogy will leave? Do we want to remember Star Wars as the story of one family’s misery, that there was no escape from?

    I hope not.

Here’s my hope: “Come home,” Han said to his son. And I think he will.

i thought he was really going to surrender and that some stupid stormtrooper was going to spook him and Han was going to perish in the ensuing panic.
more of an accidental killing. the fact of it being so deliberate was very heart-breaking.

Yes, he is not even holding a blaster. Is only armed with love and affection. It resembled the encounter that Luke had with Vader more, the "Join me" only more subtle with "Come home, we miss you".

first time i ever saw the movie, i thought jeez Kylo Ren is a terrible liar (as in: he's bad at it).
he sounds kinda dazed: this is what i need to say right now. he gains confidence in the line following, but his first reaction is definitely: oh sh!t.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 3, 2016, Original Post Date: Apr 3, 2016 ---
i couldn't agree more. it would mean Han and Leia's lives were irrevocably broken and Luke would no longer be the hero of my childhood.
that may be the way of the real world all too often, but Star Wars needs to be better than that.

that line just destroys me every time. it's just so simple. so beautiful. and Ren Ben's reaction to it is crushing.

    Haha.
I saw the movie 5 times in the cinema (but the previous last time was about 2 months ago) and every time I thought there was something there in his voice (even the first time), but I was never deliberately listening with intent to hear more, but this time I wanted to also compare his tone and voice with the way he pronounced "Han Solo" on the Falcon...and yep, he is falling apart...The next line is kind of funny and sounds very fake, the fake confidence is also there (great acting by Adam), and I'm sure Snoke doesn't believe him at all either, and the novelization says that at the end of this conversation Snoke is grinning villainously...

Related, with Han throughout the whole movie "home" is a thing. The "Chewie, we're home" getting on the Falcon, then Maz telling him to "Go Home" meaning to take BB-8 to Leia himself, then him telling Ben/Kylo Ren to "Come home". It's part of the whole reuniting part of the story. They better do right by this story.

I also suddenly remembered that in the novelization, Han says "Come home. Your mother misses you." instead of (and I'm very I'm glad they changed it in the film to) "We miss you."

this scene with Snokeface and the later one after the interrogation really bother me in the novel. you really get the sense (moreso than the movie) of Ren basically being this sicko's chewtoy.

i don't know whether Han ever really understood that (given Leia told him so late about Snoke, and his own dismissal about him being too Vader), but that in a way also underscores the depth of Han's willingness: he doesn't really know his son at all except perhaps the worst none of that matters: he's there unconditionally.
it's not even: give yourself up and we'll try to help you. it's just "come home" and all is forgiven.

Yes, I wondered if it was in the script like that, or it was improvised or changed at the last minute.

I wondered if Han knew who Snoke was. I thought that "too much Vader" was a nerfherder thing to say.

There is one more deleted scene which is additional and is not among the regular ones that is Han in Maz's castle basement making jokes about Snoke - (I only saw excerpts of it) where Han is being told by stormtroppers that he is being taken into custody by order of supreme leader Snoke and Han (deliberately?) mispronounces his name and is stalling - I imagine what follows is Maz uses the force and brings down the ceiling on the troopers and Han and co escape...
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

While Han may be deliberately playing a fool and just stalling (I haven't seen the scene and heard the dialogue, just these gifs and the little other excerpt in the deleted scenes teaser), but remember, his conversation with Leia about Kylo and Snoke's involvement is after this and also how sincerely surprised Han is at the information that it was Snoke who manipulated their son...

Exactly. Han was so surprised to hear about Snoke's involvement from Leia. Also in the novelization, Han asks Leia if she knew and asks her why she hadn't told him...and she says that he has many good qualities but patience and understanding were not among them...
Also, yes, I also thought that blaming genetics (saying there is too much Vader in him) was a bit nerf-herdy...

I saw this scene on youtube. I couldn't tell if he was just playing or actually never heard of him. LOL I think it is called "tunnel scene" if you look for it.

Ha! Thanks. I found it as well when you said.
Interesting detail is the reveal of how Han knew that Finn lied he is with the resistance - the trooper boots! haha

And still that scene seems to be unfinished? Where is Maz using the force???

Han is great at stalling. Hard to say though if he is improvising or is aware of Snoke/Smoke...

It's a bit too silly, and I am glad they deleted it, but I loved knowing about the boots. You could tell he knew Finn was lying, but then it takes a conman to know one.

I thought Han mispronounced "Snoke" out on the catwalk too the first time he said it, and I thought it was a deliberate swipe...but hmm! Maybe Han really wasn't all that familiar with Snoke.

I'm sure he said it correctly on the catwalk. It would have been too dangerous to deliberately mispronounce it in front of Kylo I should say...

But in the tunnel...Hm who knows...One thing is for sure. Leia knew that Snoke is behind their son's manipulation from a young age and she deliberately didn't tell Han...
many have been speculating in what capacity Leia (and Han, although I think Han might probably have not been aware of Snoke at all) knew Snoke.

Interestingly I see people speculating how Snoke's influence over Kylo was ala Palpatine, i.e. speculation is that Snoke was actually present and interacted with Ben and Leia in person, but I actually don't think so. I think Snoke influenced Ben/Kylo telepathically and most probably they have never met him...I even doubt that Kylo has physically seen him...This bit about, "bring him to me it is time to complete his training" Snoke tells to Hux is interesting...

And if Snoke is the one (as I think is the most likely possibility) who whispers to Rey to kill Kylo while he is lying injured, this indicates that Snoke is able to speak to people from a distance, from the shadows as Leia implies...

    @Choose Light, @Obi-Wan Solo, @Boushhdisguise:

i think he's playing dumb. and i agree it's a silly scene and deserved to be cut ~ hahaha

i think the Resistance is fully aware that Snoke is behind the FO. Snoke may keep his distance, but he's not actually hiding. even the troopers in that very scene are all: by order of Supreme Leader Snoke! so this is most likely common knowledge.

but how Han processes Leia's revelation regarding Snoke and their son is a curious thing. if Kylo Ren is running with the FO, obviously Han knows his son and Snoke are "together", it's the fact of Snoke being the one who dragged Ben into the Dark that may be news to him.

as for the nerf-herder Vader remark, i give Han a pass on it. he's trying to make sense of this tragedy in the only way he knows how and blaming it on his son's genetics is actually his way of excusing it (and trying to ease the burden of responsibility). it's yet another reason that his unconditional love for Ben on the bridge is so important: he'd written his son off as hopeless, but went to him anyway on Leia's word and (probably) his own deep-buried hope.

You are right about how the position of the saber is strange. What we are shown is when Kylo sort of offers it in his both hands, Han grabs the hilt with his right hand, but then what we see is BOTH of them holding the saber with their left hands, including Kylo who is we know right handed otherwise.
I think Kylo always knew he is going to have to kill Han. I also thought there might have been even a bit of I either have to kill you or you have to kill me. When he asked for help what he meant was will you help me do something I really have no strength to do, i.e. I'm given the task (and I suspect being told off screen that killing you will break my ties with you and I will be free of the conflict and pain it causes me). I'm sure Han did not understand what he was asking at first, but then I think he understood.
The position of the hands is strange as you noted and great job at listing the possible explanations! I agree. There might have been filming angles considered, although the rehearsal of the position of the hands is very intriguing...
But I still think that there are movements of hands off screen that we weren't shown (on purpose) that led to the saber pointing towards Han and Han's hand still being on it when the saber is ignited. No doubt Kylo ignated the saber (I only disagree with you about trusting twice - he trust the saber only once...), but I think that Han basically offered himself (not dissimilar to how Obi-Wan didn't parry Vader's saber) knowingly at that moment. The big difference is Obi-Wan knew that he can come back as a force ghost and that physical death is not something to fear. For Han, the sacrifice is so much bigger as he has no such knowledge or power. His sacrifice is so much more selfless.
And so powerful is the loving gesture when he touches his son's cheek before he fell. This will haunt Kylo for sure and I believe it will be what will motivate his redeeming himself the most.

I still think we will be shown that scene again in VIII. Either to show us what happened and if there was something more in their hands which happened off screen in TFA and/or show us that the memory of it influences Kylo...(That's why I think H. Ford has been coy about whether he is going to appear again in the ST...He can't be a force ghost, but he can still haunt...)

this is apparently rough territory that rubs up against something very raw in me personally.
i've written and rewritten this post about 18 times and have had similar trouble all day with this thread ~ hahaha.
rather than try to explain whatever it was i've been trying to say, i'll just spare you my incoherent rambling altogether.

Johnson may yet pull a rabbit out of a hat and i've no objection to him doing it (totally open to the possibility)!
in the meantime i feel like i see what i see in the scene and i'm really okay with it (for all the reasons i previously stated).

    I agree with this.
And this. I think Kylo is saying one thing (I have to kill you to snuff out my conflict) and Han is hearing something else (I'm ready to take my first step back toward my family).
This look Han gives him speaks volumes of things (Ford is such a pro), one of which seems to be "Now I understand this terrible burden on you."

Your postings are never incoherent nor they are ramblings! I'm sorry I'm not as eloquent and dedicated to respond as you always do to each point. (I found myself making this thread at a time I'm actually very consciously trying to limit/cut my time spend on the forum, as I have so much real-world things to attend to right now, haha...and here I am pulled in...ha)
But please know that your posts are always great and the points you make are always so insightful and very much appreciated! But also - take it easy!

    ----

Here is a nice video I came across today that sort of shows Han's growth and in a way, his arc...(It could have been better as it misses many scenes and is mostly only ANH, but still...Warning: Ending is brutal though...)

I thought it is suitable to post here.

I'm thinking of rewatching all the films again - I rewatched everything (all 6) before seeing TFA, but I think it will be interesting to see them again now after seeing the new film...
(I hardly managed to finish EP.1 the other day though...but it should get better now that I'm past it...)
