I thought the dice were the dice. It was one of the only things that felt 'retconned' into SW lore.

I'm all about retconning to make things make sense, but the dice have felt forced-in. And you dudes know me as the ultimate Han Solo fanboy. The dice....'meh'.

The dice do the job of connecting things together if you watch movies from Solo to TLJ chronologically (even if only in your head). We meet Han as he hangs the dice and we say final goodbye to him as the dice vanish in his son's hands. That's their purpose. I personally don't care whether Han used them to win the Falcon or not.

The dice are neat in that they're definitely in ANH, but I'd agree that their importance has been ramped up in the new canon.

And I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing. Personally, I'd rather have Han have some ceremonial connection to the Falcon represent him than something gimmicky like his vest or jacket.

Me too, and dice beats his gun (as someone suggested) as something to have an emotional attachment to. I can't really imagine Leia fondling his weapon as she thinks fond memories of him.

Maybe, but there's no more reason for it to be his keys to the falcon than his dice, and would probably be as much as shoe-in as his dice, of not more than. At least his dice had a place as prop already. Besides, I think dice have greater symbolism than keys.

Anyway, 'keys for the Falcon'... is that even a thing?

I don't think SW ships have keys to be honest. Seems like anyone can hop into a ship and take off.

Watching Random Hearts (1999) just noticed this. Just check the car keys of the pimpmobile. I'd swear I've seen those golden dice before. Nice wink to the Star Wars saga!

It's doubtful. You yourself said in your original post that those markings were not added until TLJ.
Before then they had the numbers 1-6 like normal dice.
As Random Hearts is a 1999 film I suspect they're just normal nice.

Hey queue sad sob story here... but I was just clearing up a bit last week, I went through a really difficult breakup last year and have really struggled to move on from it. I thought my clothes drawers were a bit over-full so had a cleanse. I thought I'd given my ex back everything of hers, but whilst clearing out the drawers I found a pair of her socks. They were nothing special, they were just her socks, boring grey ankle socks with a pink pringle pattern on them. They had no meaning to us, they weren't some sexy thing she used to wear, they weren't treasured, she had no idea I still had them here, she probably doesn't remember owning them, they're not something that stands out in any of our memories of years together... but finding them stuffed at the back of my drawer really upset me.

Sometimes it doesn't need to be a big thing, it can be a small thing, maybe even the smallest things can hold extra value because of their triviality. Because triviality in a relationship means companionship, closeness, familiarity, homeliness; that's when you share the ridiculousness of one another, the simple things. Han's dice were made to mean something in Solo, by the point of ANH (timeline wise) they were just some crap he had hanging around and never lasted more than a scene, we've all been there where some old heirloom you might just shove in a drawer, it had been a long time, like that silly old thing you don't want around but didn't want to part with, however narratively by TLJ, they were my ex's socks, that one thing you didn't expect to find, that in your experience never really mattered, but to discover when everything else was gone, really made you feel a part of them was still there, because it was a tiny personal item that carried a very personal part of them with it.

I really love how Solo and TLJ book-ended Han's story with someone so trivial from a single scene in the OT. Some may think it ridiculous, but for me I thought it was a beautifully perfect element of poignancy to those loved-ones who are not around anymore (be it geographically, emotionally, or perhaps sadly even physically), where no matter how small the trinket, something can make truly miss a loved one irrespective of how much the object may have meant to them, it was more about what they meant to you.

This is why I keep coming back to the Cantina....many times you find folks on here that see things exactly the same way you do, and can express it so well. Thanks @Daddy_Stardust this paragraph of yours perfectly sums up my thoughts on the symbolism of the Dice....oh and by the way I just picked up a set myself during our Disney Trip
