Lucas is disparity incarnate.
If you're digging back to 81, then you likely should be aware how often Lucas changed his expression of what happened in the past, what happens in the future, and what the OT means.

This is interestingly interesting...

 

How interesting. Maybe this represents some struggle of the character and his character arc. But, later, in ROTJ, he becomes a jedi knight and excepts that is father is the apprentice of a sith lord and ruler of the empire!

 

I was personally suprised when I saw ROTS that Anakin fell to the Dark Side over love. I had hoped he would fall more gradually and it would be more like Revan’s fall, that Anakin embraces unorthodox views until a severence from the Jedi.

 

If any character was inspired by Revan, I think it was Kylo Ren. I also think Bastila was originally the inspiration for Rey.

Foreshadowing?

 

Whatever people think about 'reylo', the similarities in the characters are pretty obvious...Kylo's background is very similar to Revan's, his mask is almost identical, and Rey used a quarterstaff in TFA, and some of TLJ - I thought that she'd have a sabrestaff in TROS, using the two pieces of broken crystal.

It's actually weird how TROS seemed to erase so much of what went before, not just with TLJ, but also with TFA. Either it was down to Terrio's writing, or someone somewhere decided to suddenly completely change direction. Also, much of the story - Finn and Rose's breakup, Finn becoming a general, Rey repairing the lightsabre and of course, Palpatine's return - seemed to have happened BEFORE the film actually began. It will be three years next month that it was released....and I still haven't figured out what they were playing at.

 

Basically the whole movie, Luke is getting a constant beating.

 

Only to hand out quite a few beatings in ROTJ...
