this is where the fun begins.gif

So, we know that Hayden Christensen is going to return to the Star Wars universe thanks to the upcoming show "Obi-Wan Kenobi" on Disney+.

But what will his role look like? Will he have a fully fledged out character arc or will he just be used as a 'cameo'?

Here are my hopes. We'll see Obi-Wan having visions and/or flashbacks of himself and his former apprentice during the Clone Wars era.

    clone wars.jpg
Just imagine Ewan and Hayden wearing the costumes of "The Clone Wars". Furthermore we learn more about their relationship as master and student and of course as friends.

During the present time of the show Hayden suits up as Lord Vader and will obviously be voiced by James Earl Jones (even though I wouldn't mind hearing Hayden as Vader).
Throughout the whole series we won't see Vader's face though. Only after a merciless duel between Obi-Wan and Vader his face will be revealed. Now Obi-Wan and the audience see Anakin's face after the events of ROTS, after all these visons/flashbacks. And it's shocking. His face is scarred and deformed.

IMO all this would be freaking awesome. What do you think?

    My two credits:
    --Vader/Christensen will only have a cameo/small precence
--We'll definitely see him in a Kenobi dream/flashback to something happening in the PT era (and possibly only that + nightmare fights in "the present" akin to Luke's failure in the cave on Degobah)
--We won't see Vader's face. That was already done in RotJ, and again in SW:Rebels. Three times is too many.

This sounds reasonable, but also pretty boring. So that's probably happening then. Haha!

But on a serious note- it would be a huge missed opportunity to have Anakin appear only for a few small or short scenes.

I have supplied boredom, so now my work here is done ;)

Seriously though, it is worth remembering that this is NOT a Vader/Anakin show; 'tis is the Kenobi show, and Vader will play a supporting role that serves to inform and "prop up" the Kenobi storylines. Kathleen Kennedy's "rematch of the century" comment was probably investor-baiting hyperbole; it is unlikely that Kenobi will be about Darth Vader in any major way. Flashbacks and dream sequences is my best bet for Vader's appearances in Kenobi, which will serve as context for Old Ben's struggle in the show.

That said, I think there's a good chance we'll also see Darth Vader in the now/flesh during the show -- for instance, when he sends Jedi Hunters/Inquisitors out to hunt for surviving Jedi (which i assume will be at least the framing story of Kenobi) -- but he won't, I bet, meet up with Kenobi in the present. I'm certain they won't have meet between RotS and ANH (although I'm open to Kenobi spying Vader at a distance, and Vader... "sensing something")

Well, there is a show called "The Mandalorian" which isn't even about the Mandalorian. Haha!
But yeah, I get what you mean. But for me the Kenobi show should focus on Obi-Wan coming to terms with his failures. His biggest failure is Anakin.

To make something clear here. I would definitely prefer seeing Anakin over Vader here. Vader doesn't need to be in it much, but Anakin should.

And that can be expressed most effectively and heartfelt through flashbacks to their time as "brothers" during the PT.

Good point. I could see a lot of emotional conflict with Kenobi. Im just left wondering what kind of other conflict we are going to face with kenobi. He has hidden himself on Tatooine to look after Luke. He isn’t meant to be discovered by anyone but Luke and his family. I just wonder we are going to see.

My speculation is that some trouble is going to come looking for Kenobi (or more generically for "remnant Jedi" or whatever) on Tatooine, forcing Kenobi to leave the world to draw the problem (probably Vader-sent Inquisitors/Jedi Hunters or their ilk) away from Luke Lars. Kenobi will counter-pursue whatever that problem is, trying to remove the threat once and for all and, once it is all over, return to Tatooine to watch over Luke (who now discovers his heritage and with teenage stubbornness claim the name Skywalker).

Yes, without a doubt. Obi-wan will still be haunted over what has happened to Anakin and will probably come to terms with it by the end of the series.

Oh that does make sense, having Kenobi face conflict on another planet. I just hope we some Tatooine for nostalgia reasons

The one moment I'm most curious about is that ROTS left it somewhat ambiguous regarding when Obi-Wan realizes that Anakin/Vader is still alive. It is possible he sensed it through the Force and knew it immediately, but it is also possible that he didn't know until years later. It might be interesting to have some sort of moment where Anakin (in some sort of spirit or dream form) reveals himself to Obi-Wan as alive.

It is believed that what Obi-Wan told Owen and Beru was probably something like, "Anakin is dead, and you have to raise his son." Interestingly, if Obi-Wan didn't know that Anakin was alive, this would actually be a half-truth rather than a complete lie. He left out the part about "Anakin turned evil and I killed him," but as far as Obi-Wan knows, "Anakin is dead" is technically the truth.

But other than that, at least in my opinion, ANH stated that there were no fights or encounters between Obi-Wan and Anakin between III and IV. When Vader says things like, "I sense something... a presence I haven't felt since..." and "When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master," I believe it is very clear that Vader is referencing the events of ROTS and making it clear that they haven't seen each other since then. Maybe he didn't explicitly say that in words, but it sure seems clear to me. So if the Obi-Wan series has something like an actual full-on fight between the two, I believe that would contradict ANH.

Ooooh. I like what you said in the first paragraph. Maybe we will get some kind of realization through some kind of thing like what Rey and Kylo did. Talk to each other through the force

I have been very mixed about Vader being in this and especially there being a sabre duel rematch because I also feel like the lore in general has made it seem like Obi-Wan hadn't confronted Darth Vader until New Hope with the last meeting their fight in ROTS. However..

I'm starting to get hyped about seeing Darth Vader in live action again and possibly being a badass with the force and his sabre that is a mix of ROTS Anakin and Rogue One Vader as well as walking around interacting with characters! If there's also Anakin flashbacks then maybe he'll be written like in Clone Wars or even better than what he was given by George Lucas and Hayden has improved as an actor as well.

It'll also be cool to see Obi-Wan learn about Anakin surviving, now being in a suit and how powerful he, palpatine and the empire have become in those 10 years since Obi-Wan left Anakin and went into hiding!

Darth Vader is always badass and powerful in animated shows, books, comics, video games, etc but live action is always extra special. His Rogue One cameo was amazing and fantastic but this show could make Darth Vader an even bigger icon in main stream pop culture as not every star wars fans check out the rest or keep up with everything. Old as well as new fans will be geeking out!

I was this way for a while, but over the past year or so (really since the release of TROS) I've realized I care a lot less about lore than I thought I did, and it's not as if it would completely ruin the lore if it were to happen, there are ways around it.

Given how it was announced, and Disney/LF knowing the roaring reception that it would get... you don't do that for a cameo... I think he's gonna have a much bigger role than most people think. And I'm all for it. I know I'm not exactly answering the thread, I don't really care what he does. I just want Hayden to have his redemption. The man had so much you know what thrown at him for over a decade, the perception of him finally started to turn over the past few years and it's gonna be great to see his presence celebrated on screen.

I respectfully do envision it differently. I don't think Kennedy's statement was investor-bait. If that would be the case I don't think investor (which often are the same people at the next meeting) would believe her ever again, so I guess that would be bad business in the longterm. To me it is quite clear there will be a battle between Anakin/Vader and Obi-Wan, even if it will be some kind of a cave-on-Dagobah-vision-fight. I do expect some sort of a fight between them and my gut feeling says it will even be in person.

Also, I believe Qui-Gon will be the one who will put Obi-Wan on a quest. I expect Obi-Wan to perhaps be at a dark place at the beginning (perhaps haunted by visions and memories of Anakin), but at some point Qui-Gon will reveal himself. And Qui-Gon in my opinion will only show up for the 'training' mentioned in episode 3 by Yoda.
Clone Wars showed us what you have to do to become one with the Force and retain your identity after death. I think this training might be part of the show. Yoda had to pass a bunch of force trials with visions and everything. I could imagine that Obi-Wan, just like Yoda, will have to go through these trials, although differently than how it was shown in Clone Wars as we have already seen that. These force visions will also have potential for Hayden showing up in the flesh, including a battle (as Yoda also had to fight visions in his trials). In contrast to Yoda, Obi-Wan will fail at first, because he has not been able to psychologically deal with the whole Anakin aftermath. To pass the trials he will be forced to emotionally process Anakin turning to the darkside before he can finish his training, which eventually will lead him back to a confrontation in person with Vader. This then would be the purpose of Vader being in the series: helping Obi-Wan achieve the powers to be the mentor Luke needs.

I think that would be one hell of a story, but yeah, of course it is all speculation. Haha, will be interesting to re-read this thread next year after the show has finished. :D

These lines have a different impact on me. The original trilogy was made before episode 3. So George made Mustafar to be the probable "a presence I haven't felt since" Vader mentions. However, this could easily be changed in something we will see in the Obi-Wan series as it is long enough before. The "When I left you, I was but the learner; now I am the master" only means to me that Vader was beaten the last time Obi-Wan and Anakin met each other, which will be the obvious outcome of a potential encounter in the Obi-Wan series. More interesting is the line "when I left you". Anakin did not leave Obi-Wan somewhere. It was the other way round. Could it be that the outcome of their new fight might have Vader leave Obi-Wan somewhere behind?

Really can't wait to see what they came up with :D

That's my exact point. Kenobi & Vader will probably not meet in the flesh, but will likely duel it out in a flashback or dream sequence.

Anakin and Obi-Wan never dueld it out before ROTS in any of the source material that I've read or seen and so I hope that's kept intact. Any flashback duel should only be training or ROTS footage!

Still not sure about an Obi-Wan and Vader duel in person but maybe it can work since there would at least still be about 20 years between this fight and A New Hope. Would also be cool to see Darth Vader and Obi-Wan closer to their prime, going at it than what we got in A New Hope!

A dream sequence/vision would kinda feel cheap since it wouldn't be real but sticks to the original lore or at least the assumption and we would get Anakin in his prime again!

A flashback would be all wrong unless it's Anakin and Obi-Wan on an old mission together or training. Duel in person would be very interesting but a dream sequence would overall be the way to go and not just to keep the original assumption intact but Hayden Christensen gets to be Anakin Skywalker again while having other scenes of him in the suit.

There will be a duel and it will also patch up some plot holes as well.

ROTS: Kenobi left Mustafar thinking Anakin was dead.
ANH: Kenobi knew who Vader was
ANH: Vader, "A tremor in the Force. The last timeI felt it was in the presence of my old master". There was no "tremor"
on Mustafar as Kenobi's presence surprised Anakin.
ROTJ Besides Kenobi saying Vader was "More machine now than man", Vader told Luke "Obi-Wan once thought as you do".

My money is on Kenobi, while on Tatooine, learns who Vader is (possibly from Ahsoka) and bolts to find Vader hoping to turn him back so they can defeat Palpatine and restore order while also redeeming both himself and Anakin.
It doesnt work out, they duel, Vader wins then thinks Obi-Wan is critically injured/dead which is why he never goes to Tatooine looking for him.
ANH: Tarkin, "surely he must be dead by now.."

After the decisiveness over the ST, am betting KK's fate at LF will be tied to the Kenobi series. So she needs it to be epic and nothing in the SW universe can be more epic than Kenobi and Vader round 2.

Also, No one is mentioning it but am expecting to see Palpatine and mid-20 Boba Fett as well.

I mentioned all this in a previous thread but at my age I forgot where.

    Cheers, KH

Hayden Christensen is not required to play Vader. Anyone can wear the black suit.

Hey it was 20 years ago. Actors have age since RotS was filmed in 2005.
But I know de-aging techniques may lead to miracles (oh, Luke in Madalorian).

Ahsoka did it this way in Rebels.
So yes : this is the most likely way for Obi to know about Vader being Anakin.

Rey and Kylo were a dyad.
It's not the same between Obi and Anakin.
I think the relationship between Rey and Kylo may not apply with Obi and Anakin.

I agree. Hayden returning to SW is not just for a snapshot in the family album as sing the Pink Floyd in Another Brick in the Wall (part I).
Thus, Luke could sing the remaining lyrics: Daddy, what else did you leave for me ?

Wise goal. I agree, and that wonderfully meets the following statement:

    Dagobah ?
    Friendly visiting Yoda ?
Going to the cave, were Luke will go years after ?
Remember : in that cave, Obi will "meet his biggest fear" (the same as Luke) and this biggest fear is...
Luke/Vader fight in the Dagobah cave was a dream but was not cheap at all!
Could be rematched here, with Obi/Anakin... more precisely : Obi will fight the body of Vader with the head of Anakin. His bigger fear: Anakin his apprentice (Hayden face) turned evil (Vador body).

    This is a wise observation.
