Seems like most of the additional material getting released is implying that the New Republic is defenseless (or at least much more vulnerable) to the might of the First Order after the destruction of the capital system and its accompanying fleet. Could the First Order have completed its goal in weakening the galaxy for a complete takeover? The New Republic enforced strict de-militarization policies after they regained power, and forced all systems who signed the galactic peace treaty to disarm. This aggressive policy essentially ripened the galaxy to be attacked, and with the republic fleet annihilated, there's nobody but the Resistance around to defend the entire galaxy. Luke and Rey are out of the picture, meaning no prominent force users are around to fight Kylo and his Knights.

The First Order seem kinda dorky when they aren't really a superior force in the galaxy, but they may have just turned the tables with Starkiller base. Do you think they will take this direction in Episode 8, with several years past and the First Order returned as the dominant New Empire?

Well, while the poll is worded a bit strongly perhaps (I wouldn't call it 'dumb'), but I think they'll probably do something moreso with bringing the two onto a more equal footing as opposed to the Republic being much larger.

They made it clear that people need to pick a team.

    1st Order or Republic (resistance)

Snoke et al. didn't seem particularly phased that Starkiller was imploding, so I'm guessing they've still got the funds and military might (from where?) to start taking over more systems. Certainly more capable than the New Republic (no leadership, no fleet, in a state of crisis) or the Resistance (too small).

I wouldn't be surprised if Episode VIII opens with the First Order in control of at least half of the galaxy.

& it was hux`s idea to use the base Snoke did not seem that bothered he only personally intervened & demanded they use it to destroy the resistance base & that was to stop them finding Luke (Luke must have done something rather spectacular to get under his skin to such a degree he was going to wipe out a enter system to stop anyone finding him) & I am going to guess that most of those troops seen at the starkillers demonstration managed to get off the planet before it blew as it was not an instant destruction like the first death star while the republics & resistance fleets were pretty much wiped out so from a military POV the First order is in the much stronger position going into ESP 8
