Seriously? You think a movie that took place 30years prior should tell you everything you need to know?

I discussed a single aspect of appreciating films. It's obviously not meant to encapsulate the feelings of every single person towards the film.

The prequels answered questions that fans had been asking. The Prequels were an Origin story. The haters seem to have all of these questions about what happened before TFA. They wanted Snoke origins, Ben Solo Origins, The Lightsaber Origins, Rey’s Parent’s Origins, Lor San Tekkas Map Origins, Knights of Ren Origins. If these questions weren’t given answers they were going to hate this film.

    Yeah, no.
I meant my comment the other way around.

As in I'm really quite OK with not having every moment accounted for; I can hop in a 50 year gap and take whatever comes without thinking that I really shouldn't have to see this thing without a prologue which hands me all the backstory.

    Cheers!

when you fast forward 30 years and introduce basic concepts into a story that didn't exist in this fantasy universe, yes it needs an explanation.

    Talking lightsabers

The force just making people all powerful without training.

Some decrepit evil dude that is the most power thing in the force ever. The force didn't seem to have an issue with this guy but has an issue with Kylo Ren.

Force ghost that can summon lightning.

These basic concepts did not exist before.

I'm in the camp that loves the ST, and I don't think there's really anything that will turn me off at this point.

Though, JJ PLEASE let Lando appear in Episode 9.

The Force Ghost was not truly explained until an animated show decades after they originally appeared. Also the Force is everything. It is really that hard to believe that a Jedi who is fully apart of the Living and Cosmic Force to be able to manipulate a little lightning?

    I'm sure that wouldn't be a problem.
All he needs is a cameo, and I would be happy.

Well, I did here Rian considered having Lando in DJ's role, but decided against it because he it didn't want Lando betraying the team.

It's called Medias Res, and everything you just listed were the same style of complaints people gave Lucas when he was shopping his script around.
No one understood anything his script was talking about, and often was told that it was all gibberish.

Star Wars films have never cared about telling every detail down the line regarding why things are how they are.
We can say the prequels informed us about the original trilogy, but the problem here is that there was a huge time-gap between the films, so everyone just had to watch Palpatine shoot lightning out of his fingers and accept that's also something the Force can do, or watch Darth Vader and Luke use telekinesis via the Force with absolutely no previous indication in A New Hope that telekinesis was possible.
Further, there's no real explanation regarding how the universe got to where the Prequels are.

Sometimes folks will talk about all the material that now exists out there which has been consumed over the years that outlines all the ways the Force works and the culture surrounding all of those considerations, but Lucas has always been very clear from very early on that there's two Star Wars canons: the Films and then the Merchandise.
The Merchandise was free to pretty much (mostly) do whatever they want to do, but it in no way stipulates what Lucas could do in his Films.

If he so chose to make interstellar teleportation possible via the Force in a new movie and some book out there happened to specifically say that the Force couldn't do that; too bad. Lucas would have done it anyway.

There's nothing requiring that anyone owes fans an explanation as to why the Force can do what it does - it's never bothered to explain it before (well...except for that attempt when Lucas tried out explaining things...midi-chlorians anyone? Even still, that was pretty vague).

In A New Hope, the Force was just an intuitive feeling you could tap into passively. No one actively used the Force for anything.
Ben felt a disturbance, Luke felt where the laser was going to fire, Luke reached out with the Force to feel when to shoot the torpedo.
    That was pretty much it.
Cool, so the Force is pretty much the hippy new age sixth sense in a space fairy tale; groovy!

In Empire Strikes Back, Yoda lift a whole spaceship up with the Force, and Luke pulls his saber to himself.
Wait, what? OK; so that's a thing now?
Alright, so the Force can be a sixth sense feeling, and telekinesis; so it's more like super powers in Martial Arts films. Check!

Then Palpatine stands up and shoots lightning out of his fingers.
    Wait, what the heck?!
He's a Force user? I thought he had Vader for that - isn't he just some creepy old dude who runs the Empire?
How in the heck does he have the power to shoot lightning with the Force...Force Lightning? Since when has that ever been a thing?
Why wasn't Luke freaked out by this new Force power? No one told Luke, "Oh yeah, btw, we can shoot lightning out of our hands kid. Watch out for that."?
And where does this guy get off out of no where being this super powerful master of the Force?
Wait...Vader just chucked him like a bail of hay? So....he's not that strong? He is? Vader's stronger...but serves him? No? Wait...I'm confused!

    It's Star Wars.
The Force does whatever is needed in a cool looking way for the allegorical painting that's being made.
Why is there Force lightning? Because Palpatine needed to look evil as hell and cause severe pain in a traumatic way that shocked everyone.

The Force is suppose to be the thing that a character gets to do that makes folks stand back and go, "Woah!", because what they just saw was new and impressive.

I wouldn't think about the Force too much.
If it's fun to geek out over and learn everything about it; right on! Rock that jam!
Just keep in mind that the Films over the next...oh...I don't know - at least 50 some-odd-years...will keep adding things without a head's up notification that something new with the Force that's never been done before is coming. There's no mailing list for new Force abilities in Star Wars. :p

Sorry it bothered you so much.

    Cheers,
    Jayson :)

What exactly are your legitimate concerns with TLJ? Luke’s portrayal? Liea poppins? I learned from TFA, don’t ever believe things will play out the way you think, and don’t listen to a word that anyone involved is saying, it’s their baby and they will sing the praises. they over-hyped phasma In TFA, I expected more of the same and guess what? I was right, and it spared my disappointment. This is how most of my expectations were for everything in TLJ; it’s not for us anymore, it’s for a new generation. It’s tough to except certain things, but it’s where it’s headed and my love of Star Wars isn’t going to be ruined bye a space flying Liea or a Fisher King Luke Skywalker; which I think was pretty great imo.

That being said, you have the right to hate the movie, I’m not going to take that away from you.

Look, I don't need to know what Luke had for breakfast every day of the 30 year gap, but a little backstory on the First Order, Snoke, and how we got to where we are post ROTJ isn't an unreasonable thing to ask for.

I have to say I really liked and enjoyed the movie. Its out now and isn't changing so my mind isn't going to change. I think it is the same for those who didn't like it. It's not going to change much because the movie isn't going to change.

He could have had a cameo on Canto Bight I guess. Maybe sitting at a Sabacc table for a glimpse. I think sitting would be the most he could do.
