Watching ROTJ the other day (including the deleted sandstorm scene) I realized something I never thought about before. How did Leia and Threepio get to Tatooine in the first place?

At the end of TESB, we see Lando and Chewbacca leaving for Tatooine on the Falcon. So, that leaves Luke, Leia and the 2 droids who still have to travel to Tatooine. But when Jabba is destroyed and they leave the planet, Lando/Chewie/Han/Leia/Threepio are in the Falcon and Luke/Artoo are in Luke's X-Wing. We know how Han got to Tatooine (Boba Fett), how Chewie/Lando got there (Falcon) and how Luke/Artoo got there (X Wing).

So how did Leia/Threepio get there? Did someone drop them off? Did they take a ship there and just abandon it? I don't think X-Wings have cargo holds!

Admittedly, a minor consideration but has anyone else ever thought about this?

Since she was undercover as another species, she took another spaceship there. It will/should be explored in a future Leia comic/book. As for 3-PO, it shows how they got to Jabba's palace in ROTJ...most likely by escape pod or were already on Mos Eisley undercover as a part of the bigger operation, and were ordered to show up when the time was right, without full knowledge of the mission, just to be sure that the Rebels' plans remained fully intact for Solo's rescue mission.

I'm confused... does this thread assume that there are no other ships in the galaxy?

There was substantial time between the movies I believe. Meaning Lando and Chewie might have returned after scouting, they came up with a plan and acted it out. Lando went in well ahead because he was already a guard when R2 and 3PO arrived. So its possible that everyone but Luke and R2 started on the Falcon.

I thought it was all well explained on The shadow of empire novel. at some point they followed Slave 1 to a planet and the whole idea was once Boba Fett gets to Jabba's Palace and have the "package" ( Solo) delivered they should come back to the rebel base to come up with the plan to rescue Solo.

It´s worth to point it out that at the novel we even get to know how Leia got the Boushh armor used to rescue Solo ...I think the plan was as follow:

Lando Infiltrated in Jabba's palace as a guard

Chewie come back in the falcon to pick it up Leia and C3Po

Luke and R2D2 was already on Tatooine at the Obi wan´s place ( he went there to find out how to assembly a lightsaber) they get there using his x wing

Chewie, Leia and C3PO arrived on Falcon and started the plan as we know it

I guess I assumed they arrived on Tatooine together on the Falcon but went to Jabba's palace separately. As others ponted out, some time has passed - a couple of years at least - between the episodes.

As others pointed out, Shadows of the Empire have all answers :) I would like to see one day Lucasfilm saying that Shadows of the Empire is canon, because it was just a perfect link between both films, and one of the first transmedia projects I can remember so far.

Read the novel, listen to the soundtrack, play the videogame, the cardgame! My favorite of all was the comic book.

Also if you look when they are walking towards the Falcon in the storm, there is also a Y-Wing Fighter.

Leia and 3PO arrived in a Y-Wing fighter. It can be both seen in the (deleted) matte painting, the studio set pictures above and in the deleted scene on the Blu-ray bonus disc.

Already the animated Holiday Special film (introducing Boba Fett) featured a two-seated Y-wing fighter, as did several Marvel Comics of the 1980's.

Yes, but in the Holiday Special Luke had been piloting the Y-Wing (with 3PO taking the backseat) and I'd like to believe that Leia herself is quite an able Y-Wing pilot, considering how much 3PO "hates space travel" (okay, apparently "before" the PT)

(Besides, from whom did Luke get his pilot helmet at Yavin IV which had evidently been used before by somebody else....)

They were all being held in reserve to assist the Resistance fleet attack on Star Killer Base, :) .
