Good point! I am just curious if he was out of practice and old. Additionally, Vader wasn't trying to kill Luke, so we know he wasn't going full force.

It seems similar to Rey tearing up Kylo- Rey was determined and Kylo had limited practice fighting against other lightsabers.

I doubt very much that Luke was ever more powerful than Anakin in his prime.

However, in the case of Luke's lightsaber skills in "The Empire Strikes Back", I had assumed that Yoda had taught him some skills during the weeks or months he was on Dagobah. How Luke managed to increase his skills between Episodes V and VI . . . I have no idea. I find it hard to believe that Obi-Wan's "How to Be a Jedi" handbook was mainly responsible. Luke would have required hands on training to be that good. And please spare me the "Luke is more powerful and in tune to the Force" excuse. Even if he was that powerful, he would still require a great deal of hands on training.

Rey had a lot less experience than Kylo Ren. She should have been dead within minutes. And again . . . I don't buy the excuse about the level of her power with Force. Like Luke, she would have required a lot more hands on training.

The force. I don't think there really is any other answer.

In between the OT movies, Force Ghost Yoda sent Luke to train with Dai Bendu Monk Ahsoka Tano at mid rim world Thape. Stuff not yet recorded in canon! Yoda thought Ahsoka could give insight to Luke for his confrontation with Vader.
Ahsoka Tano discovered Dai Bendu in archives while stuck in Sith Temple on Malachor before she found her new previously Sith light cruiser Abyssinian on Malachor.

    Sounds good.

Yoda was alive between "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi". And in the latter film, it was confirmed that he and Luke had not seen each other during that period. Why would Yoda (who was alive) bother to send Luke to train with Ahsoka Tano, when he could have done the job himself?

I simply chalk it up to a blooper.

And bad writing . . . if you're talking about the Rey/Ren match.
