How did TFA make you feel & how do you think it will evolve with time!?

My feelings on Ep.VII – NOT A REVIEW!!

It goes without saying the ripples TFA has made in our lives will be talked about for years. It’s not my final verdict. My opinion will shift and change over time, esp. with sequels juxtaposed next to it. It’s not about love or hate, just some feelings I wanted to share.

Next to Lucas’ last efforts, TFA stands as a superior “package”. It has solid action, fantastic visuals, and charismatic performances. I was laughing at most of the jokes and felt invested in the characters.

All the pieces seem to fit, the SW formula is undeniably there. Perhaps it’s my biggest issue with the film. Going in theaters I had a single desire - to be surprised. Instead I got a story that feels contrived: each gear engineered to generate maximum results for fan satisfaction (translated into loads of $$$) JJ, very effectively bangs out all the major beats, and according to fan response there’s no chink in the armor! However I don’t feel the natural synergy of one image moving effortlessly into another, or the confident story that trusts itself to take time and freely build the world not just visually, but narratively as well.

I feel the corporate agenda, coupled with JJ’s reverence of the material and desire to do it justice, and the urge to revisit nostalgia. All of these things held TFA from truly soaring high and becoming so much more than putting smiles on people’s faces. It had the potential to be the greatest STAR WARS film – A generational tale for our youth!

I cannot bring myself to say I was disappointed, and yet I’m left with an ultimately forgettable “product”. It pushed the right buttons and had noble intensions, but failed to inspire or reveal the Galaxy as we have not seen before.

I’ll always respect JJ for laying a strong foundation. I dare any Hollywood director accomplish the same feat under given circumstances. Yes I sorely miss George Lucas’ touch of uncompromising desire to experiment!

My experience was quite something. This was the first time I got to take my wife and kids to go see a Star Wars movie in a theatre. My oldest son cried his eyes out when Han died, so did my wife and 2 Jedi seated next to us. Regardless of my few dissappointments in TFA, these movies, even the worst of them, will always be better than anything else I could see in the theatre. Being able to share my favorite characters with my entire family is something I will treasure for a lifetime!

That's an awesome story!! One thing I took away with me was excitement and delight, knowing that SW finally doesn't suck!!! I can't entirely treat it like a full entry, more of a in-between movie that serves as a bridge between generations, but it's well made. Yes it's formulaic and too many nods to the past are just a bit grating, but it wins with the most crucial part of any story, likable characters!!

We're introducing characters and re-familiarizing ourselves with the universe. Episode VIII is going to dictate a lot about our future feelings about TFA.

But for the moment, I'm in love with TFA. :)

Glad you enjoyed it. I did too. I just can't unplug my overly analytical brain as much as I should. LoL

This. I even heard someone call TFA a pilot - re-introducing old fans to the world and bringing new fans to the fold.

    How it made me feel?

First viewing - overwhelmed, second viewing - 'Chewie, we are home", third viewing - "It has flaws, but, damn, it's so much fun", fourth viewing - "yup, I'm in love".

Every time I see it, I notice something else, a different scene makes me laugh, a different emotional beat gets me. Yesterday I saw it for the forth time and for some reason Leia and Rey hugging made me tear up. My analytical brain (;)) picked apart Han's death scene and found it amazing in every possible way - acting, filming, use of light (Ren shrouded in red, Han falling into the light...) and impact.

It already ages well, if you know what I mean, because I want to see it again when I never want to see the movie twice in theater. Even my beloved LOTR trilogy I watched only once (though video tapes and later DVDs got some mileage on them). But, yes, a true value of TFA will be judged with the rest of the trilogy. So far, it stands shoulder to shoulder with OT (for time being it's my fourth favorite, though that could change) because I care so much about these characters and I want to know what happens next! Now! :D

I just came from my 3rd viewing, finally saw it in 2D! I must say, without much effort on my part, the film naturally grows more and more on me with each viewing. It's like I'm discovering small things I missed the first time (with exceeding expectations baggage it was very hard to judge). I'm glad I saw it again, and probably will go again. I no longer view it as a product, and despite the obvious shortcomings it belongs right there with the OT!
