I love Star Wars and I love creature design and I was more than happy with what we got in TFA and R1. However, I feel like Ryan Johnson does not have a lucky hand when it comes to picking designs for his creatures. While many of them are perfectly fine I think that others do not quite fit into the "realistic" fauna of Star Wars. Just look at the comparison of Quiggold and the caretaker below. They are lightyears apart in terms of believability.

To further illustrate my point of view I decided to do a quick photoshop rework of the porgs (female and male variant). While I like the overall idea and silhouette of the porgs they seem to lack believable anatomy and have a stylized appearence which would be more fitting for an animated movie or cartoon.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel like this?

The Porgs do look silly, but so did the Steelpecker.

Yoda looked silly the first time I seen him too. Admiral Akbar also. Yes they will hold up. They look fine to me and fun.

I didn't like the Canto Bight Casino goers much but the nuns and porgs don't bother me.

I do miss seeing some recognizable aliens though they seem few and far between.

Worse I am missing aliens as significant characters. TFA had Maz which was nice, but R1 had only extras looking weird and not really speaking and now we see again only wired extras hanging around the action but not in it.

I haven't seen anything that I totally haven't liked yet. It's Star Wars. I hope their is a variety while still showcasing some Aliens from the OT and PT. I know the galaxy is big, but they have faster than light capabilities so you would think someone familiar would pop up here and there.

I don't care much about the new designs but less because their bad and more because we have barely seen any of the aliens from the previous 6 movies. With Akbar and Nien Nunb as the exception has their been any PT or OT alien races seen in TFA or TLJ? Even if they were just background pilots and soldiers in the Resistance I wish we had some Twi'leks, Duros, more Mon Cala, Zabraks etc. I always appreciate cool new aliens (like Ello Asty) but I wish they didn't fully replace the established ones. What are the odds that a supposed massive pirate/smuggler hangout like Maz's would only have aliens we have never seen before. Talking specifically about the nuns and porgs, the porgs are clearly an attempt at causing as social media storm because "look how cute they are" but will probably serve not purpose other than looking cute (at least the Ewoks were integral to the plot) snd the nuns look odd but it could be a case of prosthetic/animatronic that will be enhanced with cg (I believe Unkar was like this).

    Alright alright...

BB-8? Remember the same discussions we had with BB-8 before TFA?

    I like how hey look.
Let see how they are handled in the story.

It may come out great... or real bad.
    I have faith.

I think we had some Twi'Leks in R1 but I totally agree that old creatures would be nice, I mean they didn't even reuse creatures from TFA in R1 or TLJ (as far as I know). As for the CGI enhancing I think this is rather unlikely. If they were to enhance the mask you would see some coloured dots used for tracking in postproduction. There won't be much of a change. Unless the caretakers do a lot of talking like Uncar. Then their faces will not be enhanced but rather replaced. I could be wrong though since I work in the games industry and not on movies so my knowledge on postproduction is rather basic.

I was excluding Rogue One since for continuity sake there had to be original alien species like Admiral Raddus and his two Mon Cala, the other person imprisoned with Jyn was a Cantina alien, and Saw had a Twi'lek but even still R1's new aliens outnumbered the returning. They are bringing back Ello Asty's species in TLJ so there is at least that.

Prefer more aliens than humans. Even at that, what aliens we get, can we cut back on the Mon Calamari? I swear, that, and maybe a couple other aliens is all the Resistance has apart from the abundance of humans in their flanks. I was really hoping that the new characters in the movie would've been alien, but apparently Rose, Paige, DJ, and Laura Dern's character *had* to be human. SIGH.

While I do not mind the Mon Calamari, I agree that it seems a bit of missed opportunity that none of the main characters is non-human. Of all the new characters in the three movies, only Maz and Snoke are aliens. Neither of them have received much screen time. With current technology, it is easier than ever to have non-human leads but none of them is.

I have nothing against the Mon Calamari, per se, other than the fact that it seems to be the only alien race featured prominently in the movies that is aligned with the Rebels/Resistance. But I agree with Darth Daigo that with all the technology now available, there should be more aliens featured. I mean, with the OT, Lucas didn't have the resources available to have as much aliens in the movies (from 1977 to 1983).

They remind me of the puppets in Labyrinth. Seems to fit perfectly with VIII's theme.

I have to say that so far I really don't like what I have seen. JJ made some pretty wicked aliens and there were a few awesome looking ones in RO as well but as much as I try I just can't wrap my mind around this without thinking how incredibly bad they look compared to everything we have seen before.

Those look like some creatures I would expect to be dancing with David Bowie and not hanging around a SW movie.
