The new designs all look great to me, looking forward to seeing them all in motion.

As for the lack of 'classic' aliens, let's not forget there's plenty of creatures in the original cantina we've never seen in a movie since; the wolfman, the bat Kabe, actual astronauts, Bom Vimdin, the Morseerians, that glove puppet Dice Ibegon, Djas Puhr, Elis Helrot, Hem Dazon, the devil man, the giant praying mantis, Leesub Sirln, Melas (and he was added to the special edition, yet has still never re-appeared), the Siniteens, the rat Reegesk, the fly Tzizvvt and the deformed flies the Vuvrians.
(I had to look up what all of these creatures and species were called)
    http://forums.thebothanspy.com/index.php?threads/mos-eisley-cantina-character-guide.17245/

I mean look at these, seriously?!? These are rubbish:

But these by their very definition are "classic Star Wars" since they were in the first movie, yet if their images were released to promote a new film and had never been seen before, I'm sure everyone would be in uproar that they mostly look cheesy or awful or don't look like Star Wars. Let's not forget in ROTJ the daft snake with its tongue out in Jabba's palace, the original stuffed yuzzum before Captain Caveman came along (not that he's any better), Ephant Mon, Amanaman, the "prune faces" in the rebellion; there's lots that have never carried over and had they not had 35 years of nostalgia and affection attached to them I'm sure they would all be deemed non-Star Wars and ridiculous looking.

Just take this guy for example who was originally in Empire Strikes Back but was deleted from the final cut - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Utris_M'Toc

Doesn't look like "Star Wars" to me, in fact looks more like second season Star Trek The Next Generation extra, but had he always been in it, I'm sure he'd be a treasured part of Star Wars history.

    LOLOL. Ghoel. So lame.

Even more lame is the EU made one of these mollusk creatures a Jedi Knight. (eyeroll)

THE. WORST. Worse than child Anakin. Worse than Jar Jar. Worse than anything in the PT. The "Special Edition" updated Jabba's palace scene from the OT is the worst abomination in Star Wars. Hahaha.

Are the caretakers and Quiggold supposed to be the same species?

I don't have any issues with the new aliens so far, but I just find it hard to believe that there were so many alien species present in both the prequels and Original Trilogy that are now nowhere to be found. I'm not saying to include a bunch of old aliens for the sake of nostalgia, nor do I believe the galaxy is actually that small, but I don't know... Take Twi'leks or Rodians, for example. Both species were featured on multiple occasions in both trilogies. Why aren't there any now? It just seems weird that it's all new alien species and all of the old ones are basically extinct.

Exactly. Rodians, Twi'leks, Zabraks, Togruta, Nautolan, Trandoshans, Jawas, etc., etc....they aren't exactly background aliens up to this point. Yet, they are mysteriously absent in the ST.

Ahhh so that's what that thing's called. Just looked up the prop for the first time, didn't realise it's a wall-mounted mollusk not a snake; the constantly elongated tongue just kinda gave me the visual impression that it was a bit like Morley from the Clone Wars.

If were are talking about 'classic'-era aliens, I wouldn't mind seeing the MF chess table aliens as full-sized aliens. And I certainly wouldn't mind seeing more of Hammerhead's alien species. There were some missed opportunities for some aliens in TFA (apart from Maz's castle), like the Kanji Klub (or whatever it's called) . But I digress. I really hope TLJ is teeming with all kinds of alien life (although, technically, humans are 'aliens' in the GFFA).

Well I'd argue a few of those. Going solely by the movies (I know the cartoon shows are canon but let's take what only the most casual of viewers would watch; the films), then a few of those are indeed just one-offs and background characters. Most of these enjoyed larger exposure from The Clone Wars, whilst their cinematic impact as characters and the exploration of their cultures were borderline negligible in the movies.

Zabraks; only ever met one, Darth Maul. Funnily enough we only ever met one Hutt too.

Togruta; unless I'm wrong, the only movie Togruta was Shaak Ti, who had no lines.

Nautolan: likewise did we also ever see any other than Kit Fisto, who had no lines?

Trandoshans: their level of film-fame is a 3 second scene of Bossk growling and his blink-and-you'll-miss-him presence in the wide shots at Jabba's place.

I know all these aliens have been expanded in the cartoons, books and games, but by that same virtue, if further down the line Rebels (or the next show) throws in a species from TFA or TLJ, doesn't that arguably do the exact same franchise-incorporation that you're making your point about? Togrutas are only explored properly thanks largely to Ahsoka, and she currently exists solely in 'extended' canon universe at present. And let's not forget that it took 3 years for her to come along after Revenge of the Sith. It took 25 years for the Trandoshans (who were ignored by the prequel trilogy) to be featured again and explored deeper by televised media. The Force Awakens is only barely past being 18 months old, whilst TLJ isn't even out yet, there's plenty of time for these new trilogy species to be brought into and accepted as part of the greater universe of characters as more media develops.

Besides, if featuring classic species means costumes as terrible as Wald's in the Phantom Menace, then I'm more than happy for a thousand new species to appear haha.

Remember some art that was produced for TFA where Leia was talking to a group of Hutts? Maybe that would see fruition in this movie, who knows?

I love that they're introducing lots of new creatures. It's a big galaxy. Why should we find the same 8 alien species all over the entire galaxy? If you were an alien visiting an African village you might not ever see an Asian person. And if you were in a Polish village you might not see many Africans. The star wars galaxy should have areas where certain species are highly concentrated and other areas where they have almost zero concentration. Makes sense to me.

And just purely from an enjoyment level, I actually want the new Star Wars movies to create wondrous new creatures, ships, etc. That was one of the joys of the original trilogy - seeing creative things you had never imagined before. If I want to see the same designs I've been seeing for the last 40 years, I'll just watch the originals.
